GE Appliances says it does not recommend connecting a refrigerator to one, warning that the appliance may not restart through the protector after a surge and food could spoil. Check the instructions for your exact refrigerator model before connecting any protective device.
What should you use to protect a refrigerator?
Start with the refrigerator’s owner’s manual and rating plate, not a product’s advertised protection rating. GE Appliances’ guidance is specific to its refrigerators; it is not proof that every manufacturer gives the same advice. If your manual does not clearly permit a plug-in surge protector, ask the manufacturer’s support team before using one.
For a system-level option, ask a qualified electrician about a surge protective device (SPD) installed at the main electrical panel or meter. That is different from plugging the refrigerator into a point-of-use protector, and it is not a refrigerator-specific product recommendation.
How plug-in and whole-home protection differ
| Device type | Where it is installed | What the cited guidance says |
|---|---|---|
| Point-of-use protector | At the appliance, between it and the wall outlet | ESFI says this type protects equipment plugged directly into it. That general description does not establish refrigerator compatibility, and GE advises against connecting its refrigerators this way. |
| Service-entrance or whole-home SPD | At or in the main electrical panel, or at the meter | ESFI describes this as protection for the electrical system, including components that cannot connect to a point-of-use device. Have a qualified electrician assess the installation. |
ESFI cautions that “No surge protection device can handle a direct lightning strike.” Surge protection is not a guarantee against every electrical event.

- Automatic Induction Protection: Protect your electrical devices by interrupting the current flow from voltage spikes, instant surge, voltage fluctuation, brownout, and that voltage which are too high or too low. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us immediately
- Delay Function: If the device encounters (electric power) voltage fluctuations, it will protect the appliance by providing the output until the voltage stabilizes. The “DELAY” indicator would be turned on to inform its user. The appliance would be delayed for 3 mins to confirm that the voltage is stable so that it could be re-established.
- Working Principle: As there is an interruption in the current flow, the Voltage surge protector gives an interval of 3 minutes to allow the voltage to stabilize. Additionally, the Voltage surge protector provides protection against voltage spikes that can damage electrical equipment.
- Applicable Equipment: The voltage (surge) protector suit for Air Conditioners, Freezers, Ice Makers, Washing Machines, or any Large Appliances.
- LED INDICATOR: Light indicators for Normal(Output), High(Overvoltage), Low(Undervoltage), and Delay
Check the refrigerator’s electrical requirements
Requirements vary by model and market. Use the rating plate and manual for your appliance rather than applying another model’s voltage or wiring instructions.
- Outlet and grounding: A Whirlpool manual dated February 2024, for the models it covers, specifies a grounded three-prong outlet and a 115 V, 60 Hz supply. Verify the requirements for your own model.
- Dedicated outlet: Samsung India’s regional support guidance calls for a dedicated wall socket and says not to use an extension cord or multi-plug adapter. Follow the applicable instructions for your market and refrigerator.
- Adapters and extension cords: Do not use them unless the exact appliance instructions explicitly allow it. The cited Whirlpool manual prohibits both for its covered models.
- Panel equipment: Do not treat a panel- or meter-installed SPD as a plug-in accessory; have a qualified electrician evaluate the home’s electrical system.
Why a protection rating is not a compatibility guarantee
A number on an SPD’s label cannot, by itself, show that the device is suitable for a particular refrigerator. NEMA’s 2019 specification guide says the referenced standards do not assess effects on connected loads or determine whether a voltage protection rating is adequate for specific equipment. A standards reference or nominal rating is therefore not proof that a protector will safeguard a given appliance.

- High and Low Voltage Surge Protector: Protects your refrigerator from power fluctuations like high/low voltage, brownouts, spikes and surges. With a 303-joule capacity, it resists stronger power surges and automatically shuts off at 140 VAC (high) and 90 VAC (low) to prevent damage
- Electronic voltage control: This large appliances surge protector is recommended for domestic refrigerators up to 27 cu. ft., ice makers, and air conditioners up to 5000 BTU. It features light indicators for normal, high, low voltage, and delay time, allowing the user to easily monitor whether the appliance is receiving power within a safe voltage range
- Reliable Refrigerator Protection: This surge protector for refrigerator ensures safe operation by preventing damage from power spikes. Upon first use, there is a 3-minute waiting time before plugging in your appliance. After a high voltage event, the "Delay Time" indicator will turn on, signaling that the protector has cut off power for 3 minutes to protect your refrigerator
- Space-Saving & Powerful Protection: The angled outlet allows you to place your refrigerator closer to the wall, helping you save space in tight areas. Combined with its compact design, this surge protector fits neatly behind appliances without bulk
If you are comparing devices for an option your appliance maker permits, check where the device is intended to be installed, its documented ratings, and its manufacturer and independent testing-lab identification. CPSC’s 1999 warning described potential fire and shock hazards from faulty cords, power strips, and surge protectors, and advised consumers to look for manufacturer and testing-lab identification. That warning is safety guidance, not a current measure of product failure rates.

A practical decision checklist
- Find the refrigerator’s model number and read its manual and rating plate.
- Use the outlet type, grounding, voltage, and circuit requirements specified for that exact model.
- Do not add a plug-in protector if the manufacturer advises against it or the manual does not permit it; ask the manufacturer if the instructions are unclear.
- If you want broader surge protection, discuss a panel- or meter-level SPD with a qualified electrician.
