Check compatibility first, then compare controls and displays. Manual operation alone does not establish lower energy use or bills.
Start with your system and existing thermostat
Before shopping for a non-programmable thermostat, identify the equipment it must control and the electrical type of the existing control. Many central heating and cooling systems use 24V low-voltage thermostats. Electric baseboard and similar resistance-heating systems may instead need a 120/208/240V line-voltage thermostat. These categories are not interchangeable: a thermostat made for one must not be assumed to work with the other.
- Identify the equipment: Note whether you have a furnace, air conditioner, heat pump, electric baseboard, convector, radiant ceiling heat, or another system.
- Check the exact thermostat model and wiring diagram: Record the model number and terminal labels. Do not identify wires by color alone; use the equipment and thermostat documentation.
- Confirm system details: Check heat and cooling stages, heat-pump and auxiliary-heat support, dual-fuel configuration, hydronic controls, and any millivolt or zone-valve requirements.
- Confirm power needs: Find out whether the replacement uses batteries, hardwiring, or a common wire. Requirements differ by model.
Resideo’s FocusPRO compatibility tables illustrate why model numbers matter: support differs among the TH2110, TH2210, and TH2320 models. Check the table for the exact unit rather than relying on a family name: Resideo FocusPRO product data.
If you cannot confidently identify your system’s voltage, wiring, or equipment type, ask an HVAC professional to verify it before buying or installing a thermostat.

Compare thermostats by the features that affect fit
Once you know the system requirements, compare candidate models against the same practical criteria. A simple interface is useful only if the thermostat also supports the equipment and wiring in your home.
| What to compare | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Electrical type | Whether the exact model supports 24V low-voltage, millivolt, or line-voltage operation, and which of those it supports. |
| Equipment and stages | Compatibility with conventional heat and cooling, heat pumps, auxiliary heat, dual fuel, hydronic heat, and the number of heating or cooling stages. |
| Wiring and power | Required terminals, common-wire needs, batteries, or hardwired power. Follow the model’s wiring diagram. |
| Interface and readability | Dial, buttons, lever, or slide switch; display legibility; backlighting; and visibility of room and set temperatures. |
| Operating features | Heat, cool, and off modes; manual changeover; retained settings; and any documented setpoint or cycle options. |
| Replacement fit and availability | Whether the exact model is still sold and whether installation needs a wall plate, adapter, or professional help. |
Examples across different thermostat categories
These manufacturer-documented examples show why there is no universal “best” non-programmable thermostat. They are not a comparative ranking, and suitability depends on the specific installation.

- 【Notice】Buyers should thoroughly examine the installation and wiring instructions depicted in the images before buying. It is recommended to exercise caution if you lack experience in installation to avoid potential problems like product malfunction or incompatibility due to incorrect purchases. Note that the base can only be attached with a maximum of 2 to 5 wires, and connections with 6 to 8 wires are not suitable.
- 【Incompatible Systems】Multistage Heat & Cooling, 3-wire Hydronic (Hot Water), Heat Pump with Auxiliary Heating, Heat Pump w/o Auxiliary Heating, Dual Fuel/Hybrid Multistage Heating, Mini Split Systems, RV Thermostat, Convectors/Radiant Ceiling Heat and Electric Baseboard Heat ( 120-240 Volts)
- 【Compatible Systems】Single-Stage Heating & Cooling, Gas/Oil/Electric Furnace (Heat only) , Boiler Radiant (Heat only), Furnace Forced-Air (Heat Only), Gas Fireplace (24 Volts), Cooling Only
- S3001-White Non-programmable thermostat for house conventional single-stage systems up to 1 heat/1 cool, to control the temperature in a room.
- Easy to Install and Use: Large terminal blocks with universal sub-base, can be installed within 30 minutes, clear, easy-to-read backlight LCD display and easy controls make for a user-friendly experience.
LUXPRO PSD011Ba: a battery-powered 24V and millivolt example
Johnson Controls’ PSD011Ba installation and operating instructions specify use with most 24V single-stage heat and/or single-stage cooling systems using gas, oil, or electric heat, as well as millivolt systems and single-stage heat pumps. The manual excludes 3-wire zone valves, multi-stage heat pumps, and 120/240V line-voltage systems. The model is battery-powered and has quick temperature buttons, a backlit display, and mode and fan slide switches. Verify current availability and compatibility with your system.
Honeywell Home RLV7235B1005/U: a line-voltage electric-heat example
Honeywell Home lists the RLV7235B1005/U as a hardwired, one-stage line-voltage thermostat for electric baseboard heaters, convectors, radiant ceiling heat, and fan-forced heaters. It has an LCD and manual operation. The manufacturer page showed it as sold out or backordered when checked, so confirm current stock directly. This model category is for specified electric resistance heating applications, not a general 24V furnace system.

What manual control can—and cannot—tell you about efficiency
A non-programmable thermostat gives you direct manual control without a daily schedule. That feature by itself does not prove that a home will use less energy or have lower bills. Results depend on the building, equipment, settings, and how occupants adjust the temperature. Do not choose a thermostat on the assumption that removing a schedule automatically saves energy.
Installation and safety checks
Use the instructions for the exact thermostat and equipment. For the PSD011Ba, Johnson Controls directs users to read the installation instructions before beginning, specifies placement away from unusual heating conditions, and gives a maximum load of 1.5 amps. Those are model-specific instructions, not general limits for other thermostats.

- Confirm the thermostat model is approved for your equipment, voltage, stages, and wiring.
- Read the product’s installation instructions and the HVAC equipment documentation before disconnecting or moving wires.
- Follow the exact wiring diagram and mounting guidance for the selected model; do not substitute assumptions based on wire color or another thermostat’s diagram.
- If the system voltage or wiring is unclear, stop and have an HVAC professional identify it.
