The best boiler thermostat is the one that works with your exact boiler and heating layout—not necessarily the model with the longest feature list. First identify whether you have a combi boiler or a stored hot-water cylinder, then confirm the boiler’s control interface and whether you need one heating zone or room-by-room control. Only then compare products and the full cost of the system.
How to choose a boiler thermostat
- Identify your heating and hot-water arrangement. A combi boiler generally heats domestic hot water on demand. A system or conventional boiler may also serve a separate hot-water cylinder, which can require a control channel and schedule of its own. Resideo explains that open-vented cylinder systems need both heating and hot-water control, and that zoning affects the system layout: Resideo’s guide to matching a thermostat to a heating system.
- Check the exact boiler’s control interface. Look in the boiler manual or ask the manufacturer or installer whether the model supports conventional relay control, OpenTherm, or a manufacturer-specific digital bus. Confirm the terminals, wiring requirements and any existing zone valves. Older boilers may have limited wiring options or no OpenTherm support.
- Decide whether room-by-room control is useful. A central thermostat can provide scheduled and remote control. Smart radiator thermostats can add separate schedules for rooms with different routines—for example, a home office used in the day and bedrooms used at night—but add cost and need to work with the chosen system. A small home with a consistent schedule may not need a smart valve on every radiator.
- Compare the complete system. Check compatibility, control protocol, heating and hot-water channels, zone and radiator-valve options, installation needs, app and smart-home features, subscriptions, warranty, and the cost of required receivers and add-ons. A thermostat’s headline features do not confirm that its receiver or a particular kit will suit your boiler.
Relay and OpenTherm: what is the difference?
A relay makes an on/off heat demand: the control tells the boiler to provide heat or stop. OpenTherm is a digital communication protocol that lets a compatible thermostat and boiler communicate and request varying heat output. Both the thermostat and boiler must support OpenTherm, and they must be connected appropriately. A product label alone is not enough to establish compatibility; check the exact boiler, thermostat version and wiring arrangement. Some systems instead use a manufacturer-specific control bus.
Which smart thermostat should I buy?
There is no universal winner. The options below are starting points for checking compatibility, not rankings that override the boiler manual or the needs of your heating system. Features and availability can vary by model, kit and installation.
| Option | What to investigate | Compatibility checks |
|---|---|---|
| tado° Smart Thermostat X (2nd generation) | The 2026 comparison describes relay and OpenTherm options depending on installation, Matter and Thread support, and expansion with smart radiator thermostats. It reports a second-generation launch on 2 September 2026. | Confirm the exact kit and boiler pairing, particularly if replacing older tado equipment or using proprietary boiler controls. Energy Guide’s comparison. |
| Drayton Wiser | The comparison describes multi-room expansion and OpenTherm with compatible equipment. It says core smart heating has no subscription fee. | Verify the relevant kit, boiler interface and current availability. Energy Guide’s comparison. |
| Hive | Presented as a simpler smart-control option in the reviewed comparisons. | Check the exact receiver, hub and boiler setup; do not assume an OpenTherm capability mentioned for a product family applies to every kit. Energy Guide’s comparison; Viessmann’s buyer’s guide. |
| Google Nest Learning Thermostat | The comparison describes the UK third-generation Heat Link as supporting conventional on/off and OpenTherm control for heating and hot water. | Check the exact regional model and the home’s heating and hot-water layout. Energy Guide’s comparison. |
| Honeywell Home / Resideo | Viessmann describes T6 scheduling and remote-control features; Resideo notes that capabilities differ by heating system. | Verify the exact model and whether you need multi-zone or hot-water functions. Viessmann’s buyer’s guide; Resideo’s system-matching guide. |
| Baxi OpenTherm RF Thermostat | Baxi lists OpenTherm compatibility with Baxi Combi 2, Main Eco Compact Combi, Baxi Platinum Compact Combi and Duo-tec Compact Combi. For the latter named lines, the product page specifies production from January 2025 onward. | This is a model-specific example, not a compatibility claim for every Baxi boiler. Check Baxi’s exact model and connection guidance, including its temperature-setting recommendations by boiler and connection type. Baxi product information. |
| ViCare | Viessmann describes app features including remote temperature and hot-water settings and boiler health alerts. | Viessmann says ViCare typically works only with a Viessmann boiler; confirm compatibility with the specific boiler. Viessmann’s buyer’s guide. |
Which smart thermostat is best for a combi boiler?
For a combi, start by confirming the exact model’s supported control method and the thermostat’s matching receiver or connection kit. Because a combi generally heats hot water on demand, you may not need a separate cylinder-control channel; that does not mean every combi has the same wiring or protocol. If you want OpenTherm, confirm that both the specific boiler and thermostat support it and that the installation uses the appropriate connection. Baxi’s listed compatibility for its OpenTherm RF thermostat illustrates why checks should be model-specific rather than based on brand alone.

What should you expect from energy savings?
Better schedules, setbacks and room control can help reduce avoidable heating, but the result depends on the previous controls, household routine, building fabric, weather, tariff and installation. The Energy Guide comparison attributes average savings of 22% to tado and potential savings of up to 30% to Wiser; these are vendor claims reported by that comparison, not independent measurements or a forecast for an individual home. No independently measured general household-savings figure is established by the sources cited here. Energy Guide’s comparison; Smart Home UK’s 2026 comparison.

Replacing a wired control or adding a boiler receiver can involve mains electricity and connections to the heating system. The right approach depends on the system layout, wiring and control readiness. Follow the manufacturer’s requirements and use a suitably qualified installer where the work requires it; do not assume that a thermostat is a plug-in replacement simply because the app setup looks straightforward.
