For commercial traps, use the bait made for or listed as compatible with that model. No bait trap, by itself, is a reliable fix for an ongoing fly problem; remove the food and breeding sources too.
What is the best bait for a fly trap?
There is no single best bait for every fly. First identify the fly you are seeing, then match its attractant to the trap. The University of Florida IFAS Extension lists different bait examples for fruit flies, houseflies, and blow or carrion flies; these are general recommendations, not a head-to-head ranking of recipes or brands. What can I put in a fly trap?
For fruit flies in a jar or cup
UF/IFAS describes apple cider vinegar with a drop of dish soap as an option for small fruit flies. The vinegar attracts them; soap reduces the liquid’s surface tension, making flies that land in it more likely to drown. Ripe fruit, cider, beer, or wine are other listed attractants. These are lure-and-capture approaches, not a way to eliminate the breeding source.
For houseflies in a simple funnel trap
UF/IFAS gives sugar syrup or honey water as examples of sugary liquids that can attract houseflies. Use a trap designed for that type of bait, and follow its setup directions rather than assuming a recipe will work in every trap.

For blow or carrion flies
Protein such as meat can attract blow or carrion flies, according to UF/IFAS. Because this bait can smell and may draw animals, choose a suitable location and manage the trap carefully.
Does vinegar work for fly traps?
It can, for small fruit flies. Apple cider vinegar is an attractant used in small traps, and adding a drop of soap can help flies drown after landing in the liquid. This does not make vinegar a universal fly bait: the cited guidance instead gives sugary liquids for houseflies and protein for blow or carrion flies. For spotted wing drosophila, UNH Cooperative Extension describes apple cider vinegar traps as a monitoring method; it notes apple cider or inexpensive red wine may improve attractiveness. When should you use commercial trap bait?
Commercial traps and refills are not automatically interchangeable. Use the bait supplied with the trap or one the manufacturer identifies as compatible, and follow its instructions for mixing, placement, and disposal.
- TERRO Fly Magnet Replacement Bait T382: TERRO identifies this refill for compatible fly trap systems and names house flies, barn flies, and bottle flies among its targets. Its instructions say to add the bait to the trap and fill with water. These are manufacturer claims, not independent comparative test results. TERRO product information
- Denka outdoor Fly Trap bait: Denka describes bait bags and a reusable bait pot for its outdoor system. The manufacturer lists egg powder and Saccharomyces cerevisiae (yeast) as the active substances. How to make a bait trap part of fly control
A bait trap can help capture or monitor adult flies, but it may not solve an infestation on its own. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension says bait traps alone rarely provide adequate control; they can help locate a source, monitor a control program, or reduce fly numbers while breeding sites are removed. - Identify the likely fly. Small flies around ripe produce suggest a different bait choice from houseflies or larger blow and carrion flies.
- Choose a trap and compatible bait. Match the bait to the fly and trap type; for a commercial model, check its own refill and setup instructions.
- Remove what feeds or breeds flies. Dispose of stale food, keep food covered, and clean or eliminate breeding areas. A lure does not remove the source that keeps producing flies.
- Place and maintain the trap thoughtfully. Follow product placement directions and avoid positioning a strongly scented trap where it could draw flies toward an occupied area.
- Check safety directions. Texas A&M warns that some commercial baits can be toxic to pets or livestock. Follow the product label, including precautions for placement and handling.
How to choose without overpromising
A homemade vinegar trap, a sugary-liquid lure, a protein bait, and a commercial product may target different flies or use different capture methods. They are not interchangeable options in a universal ranking. The available extension and manufacturer guidance supports matching bait to the fly and trap, but does not establish a controlled, current head-to-head test of consumer fly-trap baits.
