The best desk for a graphic designer is the one that fits the complete setup—monitor, drawing tablet, keyboard, mouse and reference materials—while leaving enough room to work comfortably. Measure the usable desktop, check its height and stability, then compare desks against your room and workflow. A large surface alone does not guarantee a good fit.
How much desk space does a graphic designer need?
WorkSafe New Zealand’s 2010 computer-workstation guideline recommends a minimum desktop width of 1,200 mm for computer-only work, rising to 1,600 mm when reading and writing are also part of the job. For flat-screen computers, it recommends at least 800 mm of depth. These are practical recommendations, not universal requirements: the guideline says dimensions should fit the user and the tasks.
For creative work, assess the usable work area rather than the desk’s advertised total width or surface area. Check whether the monitor and tablet can sit in their working positions at the same time, with room for the keyboard, mouse and materials you consult. With an L-shaped desk, inspect the depth of the section where the computer will actually sit; WorkSafe notes that the center section is often the only part deep enough, and some corner designs are harder to adjust.
Measure your working layout first
- Measure the monitor footprint, tablet and stand, keyboard, mouse area, and any paper or reference materials you use together.
- Mark the intended desk position and account for wall clearance, cables, monitor arms and any equipment that projects beyond the desktop.
- Compare those measurements with the desk’s usable top dimensions, not just its overall width.
- Check that you can position the screen and tablet without obstructing your preferred working posture or access to controls.
What height and adjustment range should you look for?
WorkSafe New Zealand’s 2010 guideline recommends adjustable desks with a range of 610–760 mm for seated work, or 650–1,100 mm for work done seated and standing. For a fixed-height desk, it gives 680–735 mm, while noting that some users need a taller or shorter surface. It identifies continuous adjustment as the best option. These figures are guidance, not a guarantee of ergonomic fit or a current legal requirement.

A published height range does not establish that a desk will suit your body. Your seated and standing positions, chair, footwear and equipment all affect the working height you need. Before buying, confirm that the desk can reach a comfortable position for the tasks you do; if possible, try the adjustment in person.

Use your measured setup and working posture to evaluate each candidate. The key is whether the desk fits your actual tasks, not whether it has the longest feature list.

- Usable depth and width: Confirm the monitor and tablet fit at the same time, with space for input devices and reference materials.
- Height range: Compare the adjustment limits with your comfortable seated and standing positions, rather than treating a broad range as proof of fit.
- Stability and capacity: Add up the equipment load and check that the desk remains stable with equipment positioned and normal forces applied. WorkSafe’s guideline specifically calls for adequate load-bearing capacity and stability.
- Leg clearance: Make sure supports, drawers and crossbars do not restrict your leg space. WorkSafe recommends unrestricted leg space.
- Controls and cable routing: Check whether presets, cable management and the placement of power connections suit your workflow and equipment.
- Monitor-arm compatibility: Verify that the desktop and frame support the mounting method and load of your arm; do not assume compatibility from the desk’s surface size.
- Finish, assembly and total cost: Compare the surface and room-facing appearance, setup requirements, warranty and current price for the exact configuration you plan to buy.
Which desk type fits your room and workflow?
A compact fixed desk can work when space is tight and a suitable working height is already known. A sit-stand model offers height adjustment, but it still needs adequate depth, stability and leg clearance. An L-shaped desk can provide separate work zones, though its central computer area may be shallower than the desk’s overall dimensions suggest. A furniture-style design may better match a room, but appearance does not replace checking its working dimensions and adjustment range.
Choose among these formats by measuring the room and equipment together, then checking which surfaces are genuinely usable. No one desk type is best for every graphic designer.
