Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens in Delray Beach is a Japanese-American cultural destination shaped by the history of South Florida’s Yamato Colony. Its Roji-en garden is not a replica of a Japanese garden: it is a landscape of six original gardens inspired by significant Japanese garden traditions, alongside a museum devoted to Japanese art and culture.
Where is the Japanese garden in Florida?
Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens is at 4000 Morikami Park Road in Delray Beach, Florida. The gardens and museum share one site, so a visit can include time outdoors in Roji-en as well as the museum’s exhibitions.
How the Yamato Colony shaped Morikami
In the early 1900s, Japanese farmers settled in what is now northern Boca Raton and established an agricultural colony called Yamato. Farming there proved unsustainable, and nearly all the original colonists eventually returned to Japan.
George Sukeji Morikami was among the settlers who remained. In the mid-1970s, he donated his land to Palm Beach County so a park could preserve the colony’s memory. Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens opened in 1977 as a living monument to the history connecting Morikami’s two homelands. Morikami’s account of the Yamato Colony and its founding.

What makes the Roji-en gardens distinctive?
Roji-en means “Garden of the Drops of Dew.” Landscape designer Hoichi Kurisu created the setting as a living extension of the museum. Morikami describes its six distinct gardens as inspired by, but not replicas of, significant gardens of Japan. The distinction matters: the site offers an interpretation of Japanese garden traditions in a South Florida setting, not a reproduction of a single garden elsewhere. Morikami’s overview of Roji-en.
What can you see inside the museum?
The museum presents exhibitions of Japanese art and artifacts. Exhibitions draw on objects from Morikami’s own collection as well as loans from private collectors and other institutions, giving the indoor experience a different focus from the designed landscape outside.
