Some plants look like they belong in a science-fiction film: orchids with monkey-like faces, succulents that resemble pebbles, and a giant bloom that smells like rotting flesh. They are all real plants, and their startling appearances come from specific structures—flowers, bracts, fruit, stems, or the whole plant. “Alien” is a visual comparison, not a botanical classification.

What plants look like alien creatures?

These examples show how different plant parts can suggest familiar forms to a human observer. The resemblance is not automatically evidence that a plant is mimicking an animal; in the cases below, the cited sources support the visual comparison, while a specific biological role is noted only where documented.

Plant What it resembles Structure behind the resemblance
Monkey-faced orchids (Dracula) A monkey’s face Flower
White egret flower (Habenaria radiata) A flying egret Flower
Cleistocactus samaipatanus and × Cleistopsis Wriggling snakes Stems and overall growth form
Hot lips (Psychotria elata) Puckered lips Bright red bracts
Living stones (Lithops) Stones or pebbles Whole succulent plant
Doll’s eyes (Actaea pachypoda) Eyes White berries with dark centers, borne on red stalks
Titan arum (Amorphophallus titanum) A giant, otherworldly bloom A large inflorescence—a cluster of flowers acting together

The comparisons for the first six examples come from Kew’s roundup of strange plants. They are a selection, not an objective ranking of the world’s strangest species.

Orchids and flowers that resemble animals

Monkey-faced orchids

Several orchids in the genus Dracula, including Dracula simia and Dracula benedictii, have flowers that can look like monkey faces. The resemblance belongs to the flower as seen by people; it should not be mistaken for proof that the plant is an animal or that it is technically mimicking a monkey.

White egret flower

The white egret flower, Habenaria radiata, has a blossom Kew compares to a flying egret. The familiar bird-like silhouette comes from the flower itself.

Plants that look like snakes, lips, or eyes

Snake-like cacti

Cleistocactus samaipatanus and the hybrid group written as × Cleistopsis have a wriggling, snake-like appearance. Here the impression comes from the plant’s stems and overall form rather than a single animal-shaped flower.

Hot lips

The vivid red parts of Psychotria elata resemble puckered lips, but they are bracts—not petals. Identifying the structure matters: a striking color or shape does not necessarily belong to a flower’s petals.

Doll’s eyes

Actaea pachypoda bears white berries with dark centers on red stalks, which give the plant its common name, doll’s eyes. The eye-like effect is created by fruit and stalks together.

Living stones are succulents, not stones

Lithops is a genus of succulents whose stone-like appearance can make the plants difficult to distinguish from the rocks around them. Unlike the animal-like comparisons above, the resemblance involves the whole plant. If you are looking to buy one, “Lithops living stones plant” is a specific search phrase; check the actual species or plant offered, seller, regional availability, and care information before purchasing. Kew’s roundup supports the identification and appearance, but it does not establish current nursery stock or growing instructions.

Why the titan arum smells like rotting flesh

The titan arum, also called the corpse flower, is native to Sumatra, Indonesia. Its enormous display is an inflorescence: a cluster of flowers working together, rather than one oversized flower. At peak bloom, the inflorescence gives off an odor like rotting flesh. The U.S. Botanic Garden explains that heat and odor help attract carrion-associated beetles and flies. In this case, the unusual smell has a documented role in attracting pollinators.

A giant display that does not last

The U.S. Botanic Garden says a bloom can last two to three days and reach up to nine feet. It also reports that plants in cultivation frequently reach up to eight feet, while specimens in natural habitat can reach 12 feet. Those figures describe different contexts and should not be treated as interchangeable. The odor is strongest at night into early morning during peak bloom.

Why bloom dates are hard to predict

A titan arum stores energy in a large underground corm, and flowering depends on accumulating enough energy. According to the U.S. Botanic Garden, the interval can range from a few years to more than a decade; the plant does not have an annual blooming cycle. A garden can announce a bloom as it develops, but a dependable yearly schedule is not possible. As a dated example, Botanic Garden Berlin reported that its specimen began blooming on June 29, 2025, with a bloom lasting around three days. That is a past event, not a current bloom notice.

How to read these strange plant shapes

  • Name the plant and the structure. An animal-like outline might belong to a flower, bract, fruit, stem, or the whole plant.
  • Keep resemblance separate from biology. A plant can look like a monkey or bird to us without being an animal or having a documented animal-mimicry strategy.
  • Look for a documented function. For the titan arum, the U.S. Botanic Garden connects heat and odor with attracting carrion-associated pollinators. Do not assume the same kind of explanation for every unusual shape.
