The best stadium-specific figure currently reported is approximately £1.2 billion. That is an estimate reported around the November 2025 reveal of Birmingham City’s proposed 62,000-seat stadium—not a published contract sum or final, itemised budget. The often-quoted £3 billion refers to the wider Sports Quarter regeneration project, while separate funding figures of around £400 million relate to transport infrastructure.
What does the £1.2 billion figure cover?
Sky Sports reported an estimated cost of approximately £1.2 billion for the stadium when the 62,000-seat design was revealed in November 2025. It is the clearest stadium-specific figure in the available reporting, but it should be described as a reported estimate. The cited coverage does not provide a cost breakdown or establish that the figure is an approved budget, a construction contract value or a final outturn cost. Sky Sports’ report on the stadium reveal names Heatherwick Studio and MANICA Architecture as the designers.
That distinction matters for a construction project: an estimate reported alongside a design reveal is not the same thing as a priced, contracted scope or a final account. The public information reviewed does not establish what the £1.2 billion includes, such as land, remediation, financing, contingency or lifecycle costs.
Is £3 billion the cost of the stadium?
No. The £3 billion figure describes the wider Sports Quarter regeneration project, not the stadium alone. Birmingham City’s annual review describes a 60,000-seat stadium as the scheme’s centrepiece, while the UK Government describes a broader development involving sporting facilities and commercial and residential space. The stadium capacity has also been reported differently over time: earlier government and club materials refer to 60,000 seats, while the November 2025 reveal described a 62,000-seat design. For the stadium estimate discussed here, 62,000 seats is the relevant description because it accompanied the later reveal.
How do the transport funding figures fit in?
Transport funding is a separate part of the development context. It should not be added to the stadium estimate and presented as the stadium’s construction cost.

Birmingham City Council’s January 2026 executive report refers to expected government funding of around £400 million for the Metro extension and Adderley Park Station redevelopment. The West Midlands Combined Authority later described £400 million allocated for Sports Quarter transport links and said £50 million was being brought forward for early-stage transport work. What is known about the project’s status and funding?
The stadium was presented in November 2025 as the centrepiece of the Sports Quarter. The council’s January 2026 report identifies the proposed stadium site at Bordesley Park, records a Planning Performance Agreement and notes that Knighthead had launched a design competition and community engagement. It does not establish that planning consent had been granted or that a final stadium construction budget had been approved.

The Government said Knighthead had invested £100 million into the East Birmingham regeneration project. That announcement does not describe the amount as the complete stadium funding package or show how the stadium itself will be financed. It also projected 8,400 jobs annually and £370 million in growth each year; those are project projections, not independently audited outcomes. The Government announcement sets out those claims.

A definitive all-in figure would require a clearly scoped, current budget and an account of what it includes. The sources cited here do not disclose an itemised stadium budget, a complete funding structure, financing costs, contingency, the allocation of land and remediation costs, or lifecycle and operating costs. They therefore do not support a precise final total or a claim about who will ultimately pay every stadium-related expense.
