For 2025, CHOICE named Miele Australia’s best dishwasher brand, with Bosch second. That is a brand-level result, not a verdict on every model: CHOICE warns that performance can vary considerably between dishwashers, so check independent test results for the exact model before buying. CHOICE’s current guide, accessed in October 2026, ranks Miele first and Bosch second for 2026; the two rankings apply to different years.
How to choose a dishwasher that suits your home
The best dishwasher for your household needs to fit the kitchen, handle the loads you regularly run, and perform well on cleaning, drying, energy and water use. Use brand rankings to narrow your search, then compare the exact model and its labels.
Measure the space and check the water connection
Measure the actual cavity before choosing a machine. Check whether the connection is for hot water, cold water or a mixer; plumbing can differ between newer and older buildings. The Australian Government’s dishwasher guidance recommends checking both fit and connection requirements before purchase.
Choose capacity for the loads you run
Australian Government guidance describes full-size dishwashers as typically holding 12–15 place settings, slimline models 9–10, and compact models up to 8. A place setting represents a plate, soup and dessert bowls, a cup and saucer, a glass and cutlery. A larger machine may use more water and electricity, so choose capacity for routine loads rather than occasional entertaining.

Compare exact-model performance and usability
Look for current independent results covering cleaning, drying, energy and water use. Then consider rack layout and flexibility, programs you will actually use, noise, price and service considerations. CHOICE tests conventional, drawer, slimline and compact formats, but its brand results do not identify a best individual model in the evidence available here.
Brand averages and owner surveys can help describe broader experience, but neither establishes how a particular current model performs. CHOICE also notes that member satisfaction reflects the experience of buying, using and servicing a product.

What the 2025 brand result means
CHOICE named Miele its 2025 Best Brand for dishwashers, with Bosch in second place. The assessment drew on five years of laboratory testing and owner satisfaction; CHOICE reported that it had tested more than 170 dishwashers over the preceding five years. It advises checking current individual reviews before buying.
This is a historical 2025 ranking, not a current-year claim. In its buying guide accessed in October 2026, CHOICE reports 2026 Best Brand scores of 86% for Miele and 79% for Bosch. Those scores combine results over five years with member satisfaction and reliability information. CHOICE says other listed brands did not meet one or more Best Brand criteria and cautions that performance can vary substantially by model. Owner survey results are not current-model reliability tests
A March 2025 CHOICE survey asked 1,076 people who had bought dishwashers between 2014 and 2023 about their experience. Respondent numbers differed by brand, and the results describe surveyed owners rather than controlled estimates for current models.

CHOICE says differences of at least eight percentage points are significant. Survey figures should be read alongside current model tests, not as a guarantee of a new dishwasher’s reliability. The survey details appear in CHOICE’s report on dishwasher owner results.

How to compare energy labels
Compare Energy Rating stars among dishwashers of similar capacity: a star score alone can be misleading when sizes differ. Read the estimated annual consumption as well as the stars, and note which program was tested. The label’s estimate assumes seven uses a week, so a household running fewer cycles may use less than the estimate.
A new label began phasing in on 4 October 2024 for models rated at or below six stars. A separate super-efficient label applies to models meeting or exceeding seven stars; older labels may still appear during the transition. Check the label and product details for the machine you are considering rather than assuming every dishwasher uses the same label design.

How to compare WELS water ratings
Check the WELS water-efficiency stars, litres per wash, capacity and tested cycle together. Higher stars indicate better water efficiency, but the litres-per-wash figure and test cycle add useful context. Verify the exact model in the WELS product register; the label includes the model and cycle tested for dishwashers.
The Australian Government’s comparison example illustrates why litres per wash matter: for a family running one load daily, a 14-place-setting six-star dishwasher using 9.5 litres per wash instead of a two-star model using 19 litres could save 3.5 kL of water and an estimated $20 per year. That estimate uses the government’s stated assumptions and average water price; it is not a universal saving guarantee. The figures and comparison are on the government’s product comparison page.

- Scrape food off dishes instead of pre-rinsing them.
- Run full loads where practical.
- Choose an appropriate lower-temperature or eco program when it suits the load.
- Allow dishes to air-dry when suitable.
- CHOICE also recommends considering a cheaper top-performing detergent; the evidence here does not identify a specific best detergent.
