Perth bricklayers were reportedly charging $2.70–$3 to lay each face brick in an 8 October 2024 report. A Western Australian Legislative Council statement on 19 June 2025 also cited an average rate of $3 per face brick—but neither figure is a verified market quote for October 2026 or a guaranteed statewide rate.
How much do Perth bricklayers charge per brick?
Ben Harvey’s report for PerthNow, published on 8 October 2024, put the Perth rate for laying face bricks at $2.70–$3 per brick. It said country builders paid “far more,” but did not give a regional figure. The amount is a dated report of a laying rate, not a current statewide tariff.
The same report said rates had fallen to $1.80–$2 in January before rising as building approvals surged. Its accessible text does not identify the year for that January comparison, so it cannot be reliably dated more precisely.
What did the 2025 statement say about face and render bricks?
In the Western Australian Legislative Council on 19 June 2025, Hon Klara Andric said: “The current rate, which is not the guaranteed rate, for bricklayers is $2.50 for render bricks per brick and $3 for face bricks per brick.” The statement described these as average rates, not guaranteed rates. It is a parliamentary statement about rates, not an official statistical series establishing a market-wide price.

Does the per-brick rate equal a bricklayer’s daily pay?
Andric said an average bricklayer laid 400 bricks a day and used the cited rates to illustrate $1,000–$1,200 per person per day. That is the speaker’s arithmetic based on the rates and daily output she cited; it is not a guarantee of available work, a verified typical income, or take-home pay. The statement does not establish deductions, expenses, or how often that output is achieved.
What does a per-brick quote include?
The cited amounts are rates for laying bricks, not the retail price of the bricks or the total cost of a brickwork job. The quote’s scope and pricing unit matter: a Perth brickwork cost guide notes that new-construction subcontracting is often quoted per thousand bricks, while individual replacement and repointing work may use other units. Check whether a quote covers laying labour, materials, or a broader scope before comparing it with a per-brick figure.

Why are salary offers different from per-brick rates?
PerthNow reported in 2024 that BGC offered bricklayers a $108,000 annual salary plus superannuation and annual leave, as well as a $2,500 relocation fee to attract workers from the eastern states. That was a reported employment offer, not a piecework rate or subcontract price, so it should not be compared directly with the per-brick figures.

PerthNow’s 2024 report said the ACCC investigated WA bricklayers in 2021 over a suspected price-fixing operation intended to set a $3 rate. The report does not establish that the investigation resulted in a finding of liability; the allegation should not be treated as a proven price-setting scheme.
