The Fehmarnbelt tunnel is not almost complete. As of September 28, 2026, four of its planned concrete elements had been immersed, bringing the project close to its first kilometre of completed tunnel out of about 18 km. It is being built as an immersed tunnel: large factory-made sections are floated into position, lowered into a prepared trench beneath the Baltic Sea, joined, and covered. The project is planned to connect Rødbyhavn, Denmark, with Puttgarden, Germany, carrying both road traffic and trains.
What kind of tunnel is the Fehmarnbelt link?
The Fehmarnbelt Fixed Link is an immersed tunnel under construction between Rødbyhavn on the Danish island of Lolland and Puttgarden on the German island of Fehmarn. Its planned length is about 18 km. Femern A/S describes it as the world’s longest immersed tunnel; that specific category matters, because “longest underwater tunnel” can imply a broader comparison across different tunnel types and definitions. Unlike a conventional bored tunnel, which is excavated underground through rock or soil, an immersed tunnel is assembled in a dredged channel. The Fehmarnbelt link will have road and railway infrastructure within the tunnel, creating a direct fixed connection between Denmark and Germany beneath the strait.
How is it being built piece by piece?
1. Prepare the seabed trench
Construction crews dredged an approximately 18 km trench across the Fehmarnbelt; the trench was completed in 2024. The excavated material is also being reused to create coastal and recreational land. Femern A/S construction phases

2. Manufacture the concrete sections
The concrete elements are produced at a purpose-built factory in Rødbyhavn. Femern A/S describes a facility designed for 89 elements, with six production lines: five for standard elements and one for special elements. These are large structural sections intended to be assembled into the continuous tunnel.
3. Tow and immerse each element
Once an element is ready, it is towed out to the trench and carefully lowered into position. Sections are installed from both the Danish and German coasts, working outward. The first element was immersed and connected at the Danish portal on May 7, 2026. Femern A/S report on the first element

4. Join and protect the tunnel
Each lowered element is joined to the sections already in place so the assembled structure forms a continuous tunnel. After installation, the tunnel is covered with gravel, sand, and stone for protection. How much of the tunnel is actually installed?
The key distinction is between the completed trench and the tunnel itself. The trench was finished in 2024, but that did not mean the tunnel had been installed. What is the project’s stated cost?
Femern A/S’s March 2026 factsheet gives an overall financial framework of €7.4 billion in 2015 prices, approved under Denmark’s 2015 Construction Act. This is the appropriate official figure to use with its price-year qualification; the title’s “$7 billion” is a rounded currency conversion, not the project’s stated budget. A settled revised opening timetable is not established in the cited 2026 official updates. Sund & Bælt said a new overall plan would follow further tunnel-element immersions, so an opening date should not be inferred from the completed trench or early immersion milestones. What will the tunnel change for travelers?
Femern A/S gives planned crossing times of seven minutes by train and ten minutes by car between Rødbyhavn and Puttgarden.
