Check the sponge’s care label and your dishwasher manual before washing one.
What should you look for in a kitchen sponge?
Choose for the jobs you actually do, rather than relying on a single “best” label. Useful comparison points include cleaning power, ease of handling, durability, odor, material, surface compatibility, and care instructions. Which? says its 2026 sponge comparison considers cleaning power, handling, durability, odor, and other factors, but the available information does not identify a winning product or provide scores. See Which?’s kitchen sponge comparison.
- Routine washing versus stuck-on food: Pick a texture and shape that suit the dishes and residue you commonly clean.
- Reach and handling: Consider whether it is comfortable to hold and can reach the surfaces you need to clean.
- Material and surface safety: Check the product’s stated uses and avoid using an abrasive side on surfaces the manufacturer says it may damage.
- Care and wear: Look for clear cleaning instructions, and replace a sponge when it is damaged, persistently odorous, or discolored.
Can you put a dish sponge in the dishwasher?
Sometimes, but do not assume every sponge is dishwasher-safe. 3M describes the Scotch-Brite ocelo Multi-Purpose Sponge as dishwasher-safe and instructs users to place it on the top rack. Check 3M’s care instructions for the ocelo sponge. By contrast, LG’s general dishwasher guidance lists dishcloths and sponges as unsuitable. See LG’s list of items not to put in a dishwasher.
That difference means the product’s care label and the appliance manual both matter. If either says not to put the sponge in the dishwasher, use another cleaning method. A category-level alternative is a silicone dish sponge or dish brush: the American Cleaning Institute says these can usually be washed weekly on the top rack, but the individual product and dishwasher instructions should still govern. Read the American Cleaning Institute’s sponge-care guidance.

What’s the most sanitary sponge to wash your dishes?
No cleaning method makes a sponge a guarantee against cross-contamination. USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service says kitchen sponges can harbor bacteria and are difficult to clean; it advises replacing them frequently. It also cautions that microwaving or boiling may reduce some bacteria but are not adequate on their own to ensure a sponge will prevent cross-contamination. Read USDA FSIS guidance on kitchen sponges.
In a 2007 experiment, USDA Agricultural Research Service reported that a one-minute microwave treatment reduced 99.99999% of bacteria present, and a dishwasher treatment that included a drying cycle reduced 99.9998%. The experiment began with heavily contaminated sponges and tested specific protocols; these results are not a household guarantee or a blanket instruction to put any sponge in any dishwasher. See the USDA ARS experiment and its tested methods.

In the same USDA ARS report, the tested bleach, lemon juice, deionized-water, and untreated comparison conditions killed between 37% and 87% of bacteria. Those specific results do not establish that such treatments make a sponge safe for continued use. Follow food-safety guidance, clean the sponge according to its care instructions, and replace it regularly.
How do you clean and replace a kitchen sponge?
The American Cleaning Institute recommends cleaning traditional sponges every few days and replacing them regularly. It says silicone sponges or dish brushes can usually go on a dishwasher’s top rack weekly. Persistent odor, damage, or discoloration are reasons to replace a sponge. See ACI’s full sponge-care guidance.

- Check the care label and dishwasher manual. Use the dishwasher only if both allow it; follow any placement or drying instructions stated for the exact product.
- Clean at the frequency appropriate to the type. For traditional sponges, ACI says every few days; for silicone sponges or dish brushes, it says weekly dishwasher cleaning is usually suitable.
- Inspect before reuse. Replace a sponge that is damaged, persistently smelly, or discolored, and replace sponges regularly rather than relying on cleaning alone.
A practical choice if you want a dishwasher-safe sponge
The Scotch-Brite ocelo Multi-Purpose Sponge is one directly documented option: 3M describes it as dishwasher-safe and specifies top-rack placement. That is a manufacturer care claim, not proof that it is the best-performing sponge. Confirm that the instructions for your dishwasher do not prohibit sponges, then weigh fit, surface compatibility, cleaning needs, and durability when choosing.
