Bamboo toilet paper can be a useful alternative-fiber option, but “made from bamboo” alone does not show that a product is more sustainable than recycled or other toilet paper. Compare the actual fiber content, sourcing, manufacturing, packaging and performance—and look for independent verification of claims.
What bamboo toilet paper can—and cannot—tell you
Bamboo identifies a possible fiber source, not a complete environmental profile. Green Seal says its certification standard evaluates fiber sourcing, manufacturing practices, chemical use, packaging, product performance and fiber composition. The broader comparison also matters: NRDC’s 2025 scorecard considers recycled content and sourcing, while an Associated Press report in January 2026 described research indicating that manufacturing location and electricity mix can affect comparative impacts.
That means there is no evidence here to support a universal claim that bamboo is better than recycled paper or every tree-fiber product. A meaningful comparison needs product-specific information about how the tissue is made and what it contains.
How to compare products
Check the fiber claim
Look for a clear statement of fiber composition, including whether the product is 100% bamboo or a blend. Claims deserve scrutiny: Which? reported in 2024 that three of five bamboo toilet paper samples it tested contained only very small amounts of bamboo or grass fiber. FSC UK has also reported supply-chain and labeling concerns, including bamboo-labeled products containing eucalyptus pulp. These investigations concern the samples and cases they examined; they do not establish the contents of every product or current batch.
#1 Best Overall
- Includes 24 rolls with 350 3-ply sheets per roll
- Soft, Strong, Absorbent, Fragrance free
- Formulated without elemental Chlorine and/or dye
- FSC-CERTIFIED TOILET PAPER (FSC N004130): Made with materials from well-managed forests, recycled materials, and/or other controlled wood sources
Understand what certification verifies
Check the exact certification and its scope rather than treating a label as proof of every environmental benefit. Green Seal’s standard covers multiple factors, including fiber composition testing; certification is more informative than a bamboo claim alone, but it should not be read as a universal ranking against every alternative.
Look for sourcing and manufacturing details
Where available, compare sourcing information and manufacturing location or energy details. Production impacts can vary with the electricity mix and where manufacturing occurs, so the fiber name by itself is not enough to make a like-for-like comparison.
Rank #2
- Includes 12 rolls with 350 3-ply sheets per roll
- Made from bamboo
- Soft, strong, absorbent
- Fragrance free
- Safe for sensitive skin
Assess packaging and performance separately
Do not infer packaging quality from the fiber source. Compare packaging claims as their own factor. Likewise, softness, strength and absorbency can vary; avoid relying on universal performance claims unless they come from comparable testing.
Examples of products with relevant public information
| Product | What the available source establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| PlantPaper | Green Seal announced on September 2, 2026 that PlantPaper was the first bamboo toilet paper and facial tissue to earn certification under its standard. Green Seal says its certified toilet paper and facial tissue are made from 100% FSC-certified, unbleached bamboo. | The announcement does not establish a complete brand ranking, universal availability, or superiority over all other toilet papers. |
| Charmin Ultra Bamboo | Charmin has an official product page for the product. | The product page’s existence does not independently establish its composition or environmental performance. |
These are examples, not a “top brands” ranking. Confirm exact product details and availability in your market before buying.

How bamboo compares with recycled toilet paper
Bamboo and recycled-content tissue are different options, and the evidence does not show that one is always preferable. NRDC’s 2025 scorecard gives weight to recycled content and responsible sourcing. In a January 2026 report, the Associated Press described an Environmental Paper Network estimate that if every American used one roll of recycled-content toilet paper instead of a forest-fiber roll, the hypothetical savings would be more than 1 billion gallons of water and 1.6 million trees. That estimate is not about bamboo, and it is a hypothetical scenario rather than a forecast of bamboo’s impacts.

A practical buying checklist
- Read the stated fiber composition and look for the percentage of bamboo, if supplied.
- Look for credible independent verification and check what the certification actually covers.
- Compare sourcing and manufacturing information where the brand provides it.
- Evaluate packaging and product performance separately from the fiber claim.
- Compare bamboo products with recycled options rather than assuming bamboo is automatically the more sustainable choice.
