For a home project, a temporary roll-off dumpster is usually the relevant service; for a business, you may need either a temporary roll-off or recurring dumpster pickups. Choose a container based on the debris and site—not just the project label—and compare the full quote, placement rules, pickup schedule, and accepted-material list before booking. Sizes, rates, and permit requirements vary by provider and location.
Choose the right kind of dumpster service
Temporary roll-off for a project
A roll-off is delivered for a defined job such as a remodel, move, cleanout, landscaping project, or demolition. It is filled on site and hauled away. Ask whether the quote covers one haul or multiple pulls, and how many rental days are included. Some municipal programs have eligibility requirements: for example, Phoenix requires an active city-services account in good standing and a signed service contract for its residential rentals.
Recurring service for an operating business
Businesses generating waste on an ongoing basis may need front-load or rear-load service with scheduled pickups rather than a one-time roll-off. In Spokane, the 2026 monthly commercial rate for a 4-cubic-yard dumpster is $536.10 for the stated once-weekly, non-compacted service basis; the city’s formula also depends on container size, pickup frequency, and the number of dumpsters. This is a local rate, not a national benchmark. Ask your local provider how service frequency, container type, and additional pickups affect the contract.
Commercial service rules can also determine who is authorized to haul construction debris. Evanston, for example, includes construction-debris service in its commercial municipal solid-waste franchise and expects residents, businesses, and licensed contractors to arrange disposal before work begins. Check your local arrangements before booking a hauler.

- Versatile 45-Gallon Capacity: Measuring 26.09" L x 21.69" W x 33.7" H, this sleek black bin fits standard 33-39 gallon trash bags. Its compact rectangular footprint is optimized for space efficiency in garages, patios, or kitchens, making it an ideal solution for general refuse, recycling, or bulk storage.
Estimate the size from debris and site conditions
There is no universal conversion from rooms, square footage, or a project description to dumpster size. Estimate the volume of debris, identify heavy materials separately from bulky, lighter waste, and account for the container’s footprint and the truck’s access. Ask the provider about weight limits and whether the material is accepted before choosing a size.
| Project examples | Local size guidance | What to take from it |
|---|---|---|
| Home remodeling, large landscaping, move-in or move-out, residential demolition, spring cleaning | Irving associates these projects with 12- or 20-yard containers. | Use as a local starting point, not a universal sizing rule. |
| Commercial demolition, construction, office remodeling, storefront build-out | Irving associates these projects with 20- or 30-yard containers. | Confirm debris volume, access, and weight with the hauler. |
| Small remodels or cleaning; renovation or large projects | West Fargo lists 6-yard containers for small remodels and cleaning, and 20- or 30-yard roll-offs for renovation or large projects. | Follow the local provider’s fill and material rules. |
| Residential or commercial projects needing different capacities | Phoenix lists 10-, 20-, 30-, and 40-yard sizes; a customer service specialist determines the bin size after a request. | Ask for the provider’s recommended size and the basis for it. |
Irving’s current service page lists 14-day rental prices of $350 for a 12-cubic-yard container, $450 for a 20-cubic-yard container, and $550 for a 30-cubic-yard container. These are Irving prices, not market averages; confirm them with the city before relying on them.

Compare the complete quote, not just the headline price
Municipal rate schedules show why a single advertised amount may not be comparable with another quote. Billings’ 2026 rates, effective July 1, 2026, include $247.50 per pull for 20-, 30-, or 40-yard containers, $6.95 per day for temporary roll-off rental, and a $35.15-per-ton landfill fee. These are Billings municipal rates, not national averages. Its schedule also lists possible charges such as dry runs, relocation, and debris dig-out.

Evanston publishes temporary and permanent haul rates, tonnage caps, and an extra per-ton price for loads exceeding the cap; those listed prices are dated November 1, 2025. Check the current local schedule and confirm which terms apply to your job. There is no national price figure established by these local examples.
Confirm placement, permits, and truck access
Decide where the container will sit: on private property, in an alley, or in a street or sidewalk right-of-way. The location can change permit requirements. Contact the local permitting or public works office and the hauler before scheduling. Also check whether the truck can approach safely and whether parking restrictions, traffic control, reflective marking, or temporary no-parking signs are required.

- Private driveway: Minneapolis says an owner does not need a permit to place a dumpster in the driveway of a residential property they own. That is a Minneapolis rule, not a universal exemption.
- Public right-of-way: Minneapolis requires a street-use permit when equipment restricts right-of-way access, temporary no-parking signs are needed, or parking meters must be hooded; its guidance also requires company identification and reflective materials on containers.
- Local permit requirements: Evanston requires a right-of-way permit for all dumpsters placed in the right-of-way and warns that an unpermitted container may be subject to removal until a permit is obtained.
Check prohibited materials before loading
Accepted-material rules depend on the provider, location, and waste stream. Do not assume a rule from one city applies to another. Disclose heavy or special materials—including concrete, dirt, roofing, appliances, tires, paint, and hazardous waste—when requesting a quote, and get the actual hauler’s approval before loading.
- Phoenix prohibits hazardous waste in its roll-off service.
- West Fargo excludes hazardous waste, appliances, and tires.
- Pocatello lists refrigerators, freezers, air-conditioning units, items containing Freon, hazardous waste, and tires as prohibited in its containers.
Follow the provider’s fill instructions as well as its accepted-material list. West Fargo tells customers to keep material level with the top of the container and not overfill it.
