For a low-profile boundary that vehicles will not repeatedly strike, properly specified steel or aluminum can work. For a more substantial finished edge, consider pavers, stone, or a poured curb installed on a suitable base. Ordinary garden-bed edging is not automatically strong enough to restrain a driveway.
Choose edging based on how the driveway is used
Before choosing a material, decide whether the edge only needs to contain loose aggregate or must also withstand tires crossing it. Check vehicle paths, including turning and backing, and consider the drivewayโs shape, base, runoff route, and desired permanence. If tires repeatedly hit or cross the border, do not assume a thin decorative product will hold up; confirm the product is intended for the application and loading.
A hard boundary such as an existing wall, foundation, or sidewalk may already contain gravel on that side. In that case, separate edging may be unnecessary for containment, though it could still serve a decorative purpose.

Can metal edging hold a gravel driveway?
It can serve as a low-profile gravel boundary when the product, anchoring, base, and loading suit the installation. That does not mean any metal garden edging is a driveway restraint. A manufacturerโs documented aggregate application is evidence for that specific product detail, not proof that every metal strip can withstand vehicle contact.
For comparison, guidance from the Concrete Masonry & Hardscapes Association (CMHA) says: โFlat metal or plastic landscape edging used around plantings and flower beds is not an acceptable restraint for interlocking concrete pavements.โ This statement concerns restraint for interlocking concrete pavement, not every gravel edge. CMHA lists precast concrete, plastic, cut stone, aluminum, steel, and poured-in-place concrete among restraint types for those paver systems. Read CMHAโs edge-restraint guidance.

Keep paver guidance in its proper scope
If you choose a paver or brick border, its restraint and base details matter. Belgard recommends thicker aluminum or steel edging for pavers exposed to vehicular traffic, advises following the selected manufacturerโs spike spacing, and says plastic restraint should be specifically designed for pavers and anchored into the compacted aggregate base. Those recommendations concern paver installations, not a universal gravel-edge design. Belgardโs paver edge-restraint guide.
Unilockโs paver-driveway guide directs installers to place plastic restraint on the base course, tight against the pavers, and fasten it with 12-inch spikes; it also cautions against flimsy plastic edging. Check the product and installation details before buying
- Map tire contact. Identify whether wheels will cross, clip, or turn against the border. If they will, look for a product intended for that exposure and confirm its stated suitability with the manufacturer.
- Clarify the job. Decide whether the edge is only containing loose aggregate or restraining a paver field. The requirements for paver restraint should not be transferred automatically to gravel.
- Check the base and drainage. Confirm what the selected product requires beneath it and where runoff will go. If the base or drainage conditions are uncertain, get site-specific guidance before fixing the edge in place.
- Match the product to the layout. Check whether it can handle the drivewayโs curves, the intended finish, and the desired permanence. Compare thickness, height, corrosion protection, anchors, and intended application.
- Follow that productโs instructions. Use its specified base placement, anchors, and spacing. Do not borrow a stake interval from a different brand or from paver instructions unless the selected manufacturer calls for it.
Permalocโs AsphaltEdge page shows an application for decomposed granite or aggregate over a compact gravel base and lists steel spikes as accessories. Its separate StructurEdge page describes specific aluminum paver-restraint thicknesses for driveway and walkway use.
