Thinning 101: How to Thin Summer Vegetable Seedlings

Thin seedlings early enough to reach crop-specific spacing. Keep the strongest plants, and cut extras at soil level when pulling could disturb nearby roots.

Thin crowded vegetable seedlings early enough to leave the spacing recommended for the crop and variety. Keep the healthiest plants; pull extras only when they come away easily, and snip them at soil level if pulling might disturb nearby roots. There is no single spacing or thinning date that fits every vegetable.

Why thin vegetable seedlings?

Thinning means reducing the number of seedlings so the ones you leave have more room to grow. Crowded plants compete for water, nutrients, and sunlight; opening space can also improve airflow and help plants reach a suitable size and yield. North Carolina State University Extension explains the practice in its vegetable gardening guide.

When should you thin?

Use the seed packet or a local extension guide to identify the crop’s final spacing, then thin before seedlings become large and tangled. For many small-seeded vegetables, North Carolina State Extension suggests starting when seedlings have one or two pairs of true leaves—the leaves that appear after the first seed leaves. UF/IFAS Extension gives about 1–2 inches tall or two sets of true leaves as a practical cue.

Carrots show why timing is not universal: University of Illinois Extension describes thinning at about 1 inch tall, while University of Minnesota Extension recommends waiting until the largest seedlings reach 3–4 inches. These are different recommendations from different extension sources, not a single rule to average. Follow the guidance suited to your crop, variety, and growing conditions.

  • EASIER SEED STARTING: Our Burpee SuperSeed tray with 36 flexible pop-out cells is designed to simplify indoor seed starting for all your favorite vegetables, flowers and herbs. Just add seed starting mix, seeds, water and light to get growing! Rows are labeled alphanumerically for seedling identification with included Plant-o-Gram diagram. Tray dimensions: 11.5" x 10-3/8" x 2-1/4"
  • SMARTER WATERING SYSTEM: Molded corner slots in each cell improve drainage and soil aeration to set your seeds up for germination success. Deep channels in the watering tray draw excess away from the cells, while the raised perimeter edge keeps water contained in the tray - no spills! Seed tray side handles make it easy to lift and pour off excess water or check seedlings daily.
  • SIMPLER TRANSPLANTING: Soft food-grade silicone cells cradle seedlings and gently flex to pop out when it’s time to transplant into your outdoor garden! This system is specially designed to reduce stress on your seedlings, so you don't damage their roots. After transplanting, trays are easy to clean and reuse or simply store for next growing season. Top shelf dishwasher safe.
  • SEED STARTER TIP: Many favorite vegetables, including peppers and tomatoes, must be started indoors before warmer weather arrives. Start pepper seeds 8-10 weeks before your area’s average last frost date, and tomato seeds 6-8 weeks before last frost. Check your Burpee seed packets for instructions on when and how to plant any of your herb, flower and vegetable seeds.

How far apart should seedlings be?

Use the distance between plants in the row, not row spacing. Row spacing is a separate measurement, and the seed packet or local growing guide should specify it. The examples below are recommendations from the cited extension sources; they are not universal standards.

Crop or setup Spacing or thinning guidance Source and context
Finger carrots No more than 3 seedlings per inch when seedlings are about 1 inch tall University of Illinois Extension
Carrots harvested young 1–2 seedlings per inch University of Illinois Extension
Larger mature carrots, such as Danvers and Chantenay 1 seedling per 1–2 inches University of Illinois Extension
Carrots and parsnips 2–4 inches apart; thin when the largest seedlings are 3–4 inches tall University of Minnesota Extension
Leaf lettuce 4 inches apart University of Illinois Extension
Cos or Butterhead lettuce 6–8 inches apart University of Illinois Extension
Crisphead lettuce 10–12 inches apart in the row University of Illinois Extension
Beets, carrots, and radishes in containers 2 inches apart as a container-growing example North Carolina State Extension
Swiss chard and lettuce in containers 4–6 inches apart as a container-growing example North Carolina State Extension

Spacing depends on variety, desired harvest size, and whether plants are growing in a bed, row, or container. For example, closer carrot spacing can suit young roots, while larger mature carrots need more room. Check the packet for your variety rather than applying a spacing from another crop or setup.

How to thin without damaging the plants you keep

  1. Choose the seedlings to keep. Select healthy, vigorous plants that are well positioned for the spacing you need. Remove extras while they are still small rather than waiting until their roots and leaves are tangled.
  2. Pull only if the extra releases easily. Gently remove it without tugging the seedling you intend to keep. If its roots are close to a neighbor’s, do not pull.
  3. Cut close to the soil when roots may be intertwined. Use small scissors or snips to cut the unwanted seedling at ground level. UF/IFAS Extension recommends hand-pulling, forceps, or cutting; North Carolina State Extension also advises cutting or pinching near the base when container-grown roots may be intertwined.
  4. Thin in the evening if convenient. North Carolina State Extension notes that the remaining seedlings then have a cool, dark night to recover.

Scissors are optional: the important point is to remove an extra without disturbing the roots of the plant you keep.

Special cases: taproots, hills, and summer lettuce

Carrots and parsnips

These crops develop taproots, which can be damaged or grow misshapen if disturbed. Minnesota Extension advises against transplanting them, so do not plan to save pulled carrot or parsnip seedlings as transplants. Thin in place, cutting extras at soil level if pulling risks disturbing a neighbor.

Squash, cucumber, melon, and sweet corn planted in hills

Hill planting is a different setup from spacing individual plants along a row. Virginia Cooperative Extension recommends sowing 4–6 seeds per hill and thinning to 3–5 plants per hill. Use that as hill-specific guidance, not as a final spacing rule for every garden layout.

Lettuce in summer

Thinning can give lettuce room, but it cannot remove heat stress. University of Illinois Extension says lettuce thrives at an average daily temperature of 60–70°F. It notes that summer lettuce started under shade or protection can be transplanted to more moderate sites, with limited success. Match your timing and site to local conditions as well as the spacing guidance.

Can you eat or transplant the seedlings you remove?

University of Illinois Extension says removed lettuce seedlings may be transplanted or eaten. Handle any edible seedlings as you would other produce, and only eat them when you can identify the crop and know they have been grown and handled safely. Do not assume that every vegetable seedling is suitable to eat or transplant; carrots and parsnips, in particular, are poor transplant candidates because disturbing their taproots can damage them.

How to avoid thinning next time

  • Sow seeds at the spacing or rate on the packet instead of scattering them densely.
  • Consider pelleted carrot seed if placing tiny seeds evenly is difficult; University of Illinois Extension notes that pelleted seed is easier to sow.
  • For containers, follow container-specific spacing rather than assuming the same layout as an in-ground bed. North Carolina State Extension notes that thinning may be unnecessary when seeds are sown at the desired rate.
