One-way screws are tamper-resistant fasteners designed to drive in with an ordinary flat-blade screwdriver but resist reverse turning with that same tool. Their angled drive surfaces encourage the blade to slip off when someone tries to loosen the screw. They can deter casual removal, but they are not impossible to remove: specialist tools or methods that grip the head may work, sometimes at the cost of damaging the fastener or surrounding material.
How one-way screws work
A one-way screw has a slotted head shaped to transmit turning force in the tightening direction. In reverse, the blade tends to cam out instead of engaging the slot securely. Tamperproof.com says its slotted one-way screws can be installed with a standard slotted screwdriver and are intended for permanent installations (Tamperproof.com product page). NBK America describes its one-side pan-head machine screws as fastenable but not removable with commercially available flat-head screwdrivers (NBK America engineering resource).
These are product descriptions, not evidence that a screw is proof against every tool or removal technique. “Tamper-resistant” or “difficult to remove with ordinary tools” is more accurate than “tamper-proof.”
When a one-way screw makes sense
Choose one when a conventional slotted screw would be easy to loosen and the assembly is expected to stay in place. NBK gives preventing removal of interlock devices as one application; fixed signage or public fixtures may also be candidates when the fastener suits the actual load, substrate, and environment. The sources do not establish a universal list of suitable applications.

#1 Best Overall
- Features tamper resistant one-way head
- Diameter & Length: #12 X 1 inch
- Used to attach sheet metal to other thin metal, wood or other material
- Sharp pointed tip
- Pilot hole should be pre-drilled
One-way screws are a poor fit for parts that need routine inspection, repair, or replacement. If authorized disassembly matters, consider a serviceable security screw that requires a matching driver. The available sources do not provide a controlled, standardized security comparison between drive styles, so selection should be based on the job rather than an assumed security ranking.
What to check before choosing one
Start with the assembly, not just the screw head. Confirm the fastener type and dimensions with the supplier, since product ranges and stock vary and may change. NEFCO describes the standard thread-size and length nomenclature used for security screws; Tamperproof.com illustrates the variety of head profiles and dimensions suppliers may offer (NEFCO catalog; Tamperproof.com product page).

- Features tamper resistant one-way head
- Diameter & Length: #10 X 1-1/2 inch
- Used to attach sheet metal to other thin metal, wood or other material
- Sharp pointed tip
- Pilot hole should be pre-drilled
- Substrate and threads: Determine what the screw enters and whether you need a machine screw for a mating thread or a sheet-metal screw for the material and assembly.
- Diameter and length: Match the required thread and engagement to the part; verify the supplier’s exact dimensions rather than assuming catalog listings are interchangeable.
- Head profile and clearance: Select a head style that fits the mating surface and available space. Supplier listings include round, pan, truss, and oval head styles.
- Material and exposure: Confirm material suitability for moisture, chemicals, and other site conditions. A catalog listing alone does not establish suitability for every environment.
- Future service: Decide whether the installation can reasonably be treated as permanent. If maintenance access is likely, a removable security drive may be more practical.
Can one-way screws be removed?
Yes, in some installations, but difficulty and risk depend on the screw, how it was installed, and access to its head. Tamperproof.com lists dedicated removal tools, while RS notes that pliers can sometimes apply the torque needed to remove a one-way screw (Tamperproof.com product page; RS, “A Guide to Security Screws,” September 8, 2026). These are examples, not a guarantee that either approach will work for a particular installation.
For authorized maintenance, check with the fastener supplier for a compatible removal tool before attempting removal. Plan for the possibility of damaging the screw, the finish, or the surrounding surface; a tool intended for one product may not fit another.

- GREAT FOR SECURITY APPLICATIONS: One-way lag screws cannot be removed with conventional tools—ideal for safes, security gates, and permanent fixtures.
- DESIGNED FOR PERMANENT INSTALLATION: The one-way slotted head allows installation with a flat screwdriver but prevents removal with standard tools.
- HEAT-TREATED GRADE 5 STEEL: Made from heat-treated Grade 5 steel to prevent breaking or snapping during installation into wood or structural materials.
- PRE-DRILLING RECOMMENDED: Drill a pilot hole matching the screw diameter before driving to ensure proper alignment and prevent snapping during installation.
- TRUSTED HILLMAN FASTENING SOLUTIONS: Hillman hardware products are engineered for consistent quality, dependable performance, and reliable fastening across construction, repair, and home improvement applications.

- ONE-WAY LAG SCREWS FOR TAMPER-RESISTANT PERMANENT FASTENING: 5/16 in. x 3 in. heat-treated one-way lag screws are engineered for security gates, public restroom fixtures, institutional hardware, and installations requiring tamper resistance.
- ONE-WAY SLOTTED HEAD ALLOWS INSTALLATION BUT RESISTS REMOVAL: Slotted head installs with a standard flat-head screwdriver but prevents easy removal once tightened. Extraction requires a specialized tool, ideal for permanent installations.
- HEAT-TREATED GRADE 5 STEEL FOR HIGH-STRENGTH PERFORMANCE: Heat-treated Grade 5 steel withstands high torque and demanding installation conditions, preventing snapping or breaking during driving into wood and structural materials.
- PRE-DRILLING RECOMMENDED FOR PROPER INSTALLATION: Drill a pilot hole matching the screw diameter before installation to reduce material stress, prevent wood splitting, and ensure smooth, accurate driving into structural wood materials.
- TRUSTED HILLMAN FASTENING SOLUTIONS: Hillman hardware products are engineered for consistent quality, dependable performance, and reliable fastening across construction, repair, and home improvement project applications.
One-way or serviceable security screw?
| Decision factor | One-way screw | Serviceable security screw |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary reverse turning | Designed to resist removal with an ordinary flat-blade screwdriver. | Typically requires a matching driver; resistance depends on the specific drive and application. |
| Authorized disassembly | May require a dedicated removal tool or another way to grip the head. | Can be removed with the compatible driver. |
| Best fit | Installations expected to remain in place. | Assemblies where authorized inspection or repair is expected. |
| Security comparison | The cited sources do not establish a standardized head-to-head security rating. Match the fastener to the access, substrate, threads, head clearance, and service needs of the installation. | |
