Roses are commonly associated with love and good fortune, but the meaning assigned to a particular color is a flower-language tradition, not a universal rule. In the garden, success depends less on symbolism than on matching the rose to a sunny, well-drained site and adjusting care to its type and growing conditions.

What roses symbolize

The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) describes roses broadly as symbols of love and good fortune. Its flower-language guide also gives familiar associations for individual colors:

Rose color Association in the RHS guide
Red Eternal love
Pink Admiration, joy, and gratitude
White Truth and innocence
Yellow Friendship and caring
Orange Energy
Red and white Unity

These are familiar associations in one guide, not a fixed code shared across cultures or eras. The RHS history of flower language notes that Victorian and later authors drew on different sources and preferences; some books even suggested that how a flower was presented could change its message. Flower-language books grew popular in the nineteenth century, declined after the First World War, and saw a revival from the 1960s onward. Read the RHS history of flower language.

How roses became symbols of love, beauty, and politics

Roses have carried meanings beyond romance. The University of Illinois Extension’s historical account describes the flower as a symbol of love, beauty, war, and politics. It estimates the genus Rosa at about 150 species and says garden cultivation began roughly 5,000 years ago, probably in China; these are estimates and historical claims reported by the university, not universal points of agreement.

In the fifteenth-century conflict remembered as the War of the Roses, the white rose was associated with York and the red rose with Lancaster. Later, repeat-blooming Chinese roses reached Europe in the late eighteenth century, helping shape the garden roses familiar today. See the University of Illinois Extension history of roses.

Choose a rose for its site and purpose

Roses belong to the genus Rosa and include a wide range of garden forms, sizes, colors, flowering patterns, and plants that produce decorative hips. Before choosing one, consider how much room and sunlight you have, the local climate and exposure, the mature size and rose type, and whether fragrance, repeat flowering, or hips matter most. The RHS plant guide describes their range of forms and recommends fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil in a sunny position. Explore the RHS rose growing guide.

Find a suitable position

  • Choose a sunny site. The RHS general guide recommends at least four hours of sunlight.
  • Avoid very exposed, windy positions, and allow about 60 cm around plants.
  • Use free-draining soil that retains enough moisture not to dry out completely.
  • Do not plant in frozen or waterlogged ground, or during drought; adapt general guidance to your local climate and the rose you select.

Choose the right buying and planting time

Bare-root roses are typically offered from November to March and should be planted promptly after arrival when conditions allow. Container-grown roses are generally available year-round and can be planted at any time, provided the ground and weather are suitable. These are RHS general recommendations; local seasons and the individual plant can affect timing.

Watering roses without overdoing it

Newly planted roses need regular watering while their roots establish, particularly in summer. For established roses in borders, the RHS recommends watering during dry spells in high summer, up to once a week with 5–10 litres per plant. That is guidance for this situation, not a fixed schedule for every rose or climate. A thorough soak around the base is preferable to frequent light watering.

Container roses need closer attention: check them regularly and water more often than border plants, potentially daily in hot weather. Keep the compost from drying out, but do not leave it waterlogged. Direct water to the soil rather than wetting foliage and flowers. The RHS guide covers watering and other rose care.

Feeding, mulching, and deadheading

Feed and mulch according to how the rose is grown

For roses in borders, the RHS suggests feeding twice a year: in March or April, then again in midsummer after the first flush, particularly for repeat-flowering types. A mulch of well-rotted manure or garden compost can help maintain soil conditions. Container roses need more frequent feeding: the RHS suggests feeding every fortnight from mid-spring to late summer, switching to a high-potash feed after flowering starts. Follow product labels and local guidance.

Decide whether to remove faded flowers

Snipping faded blooms about weekly can encourage further flowering. If a rose is valued for its decorative hips, leave its flowers in place so the fruit can form.

Pruning and common rose problems

There is no single pruning calendar that suits every rose type. The RHS gives two broad aims: remove dead, diseased, or damaged shoots, and open the center of the plant to improve air circulation. Check guidance for the specific type of rose before deciding when and how much to prune.

Special case: miniature roses in pots

Miniature potted roses may need advice tailored to their climate and growing conditions. UF/IFAS Extension Pasco County’s 2026 guide is specific to miniature roses in a Florida context: it recommends drainage and evenly moist, not waterlogged, soil, and gradual acclimation when moving indoor plants outdoors. Its sunlight, watering, and dormant-season pruning guidance should not be treated as a general schedule for all roses or regions. Read the UF/IFAS miniature-rose guide.
