Their startling chorus came from the toys’ squeakers as the toys expanded, and the follow-up build used more toys in a different arrangement.
What Adam Savage’s “Duck Bomb” actually was
Savage set out to reproduce the sound of multiple squeaky toys sounding together after seeing viral footage of the effect. In October 2015, coverage by Make and TIME described a rig that held the toys compressed and then released them together. “Bomb” was playful project language for the coordinated noise-making release; the sources describe no explosive or detonation.
What makes the toys squawk as they expand
The toys were from the Squawkie Talkie dog-toy family. Make describes a negative-pressure sound generator in the toy’s throat: squeezing the toy pushes air out without producing its characteristic squawk; as the toy expands again, air passes back through the sounder and creates the noise. Savage’s setup used that return expansion to make several toys squawk at once.
The documented familiar model was a pelican-shaped toy, despite the project’s “duck” nickname. Savage’s creator post identified the pelican as the recognizable model and said he had bought the toys on Amazon at the time. That is a historical identification, not confirmation that the same model is currently available under an active listing.

How the first build differed from the follow-up
Make reports 11 toys in the initial version and 16 in the larger follow-up. The second group was not ducks alone: it included albatross- and flamingo-shaped toys as well. Savage’s post says he initially ordered a dozen for the experiment; the order count and the 11 toys reported in the first build are different details, not interchangeable build counts.

The row-and-tie arrangement addressed a practical problem with toys piled together: some did not produce a sustained squawk. It was a change in how the toys were held and released, not a reported acoustic test or measured performance upgrade.

Can you still buy the toy Savage used?
Savage’s post points to Amazon as the purchase source in 2015, while Make identifies the family as Squawkie Talkie. Searching for “Squawkie Talkie pelican dog toy” is therefore a reasonable way to identify the historical model. The available sources do not verify current stock, an exact live listing, or present-day brand ownership, so a current product match should not be assumed.

The cited project coverage and creator post do not report a sound-pressure measurement. That means there is no sourced decibel figure for the builds, and they cannot be ranked by measured loudness. Descriptions of the sound as startling or shrieking capture the reaction, not a quantified hearing-risk finding.

In a 2016 Reddit AMA, Savage said the squeaky ducks from the video were still in his shop; the statement appears in the AMA transcript.
