The Chanticleer flowering pear is Pyrus calleryana ‘Chanticleer’—an ornamental Callery pear valued for its narrow, upright shape, white spring flowers and red-purple fall foliage. It is not an Asian pear grown for edible fruit. Before planting one, check local rules: Callery pear can escape cultivation, and restrictions vary by jurisdiction.
What is a Chanticleer flowering pear?
Chanticleer is a cultivar of Callery pear in the rose family. Oregon State University also lists “Cleveland Select” as a name for it and notes that it flowers later in spring than the Bradford cultivar. Unlike Asian pear trees grown for their fruit, Chanticleer is planted primarily as an ornamental tree. Oregon State University’s profile and the University of Maryland Extension’s pear guidance distinguish these uses.
How large does it grow, and what does it look like?
Oregon State describes Chanticleer as a tight, narrow pyramid with multiple leaders and a moderate growth rate. Its profile estimates a mature size of about 35 feet tall by 15 feet wide after 15 years. That is a university profile estimate, not a guarantee: growing conditions and the particular clone affect size and how columnar the tree appears.
- Flowers: White spring blooms; Chanticleer blooms later than Bradford, according to Oregon State.
- Autumn foliage: Usually red-purple.
- Light and water: The Oregon State profile lists full sun and regular watering.
- Hardiness: The same profile lists USDA Zone 5. Confirm suitability for your local climate and site rather than treating that listing as a universal performance guarantee.
Callery pear flowers may have an odor many people find unpleasant, and the species produces small fruit. The tree is not a choice for harvesting edible pears.

Is Chanticleer Callery pear invasive?
Chanticleer is one cultivar, but it belongs to a species that can spread beyond planted landscapes. Oregon State reports Callery pear established outside cultivation in 25 U.S. states in its profile accessed October 8, 2026. The National Invasive Species Information Center says the species, native to East Asia, was introduced to the United States in 1908 and can form dense, thorny thickets after escaping cultivation.
A single cultivar name does not eliminate seed risk. Different Callery pear cultivars can cross-pollinate; fruit may also form through pollination between a cultivar and its rootstock. Birds can disperse viable seed, allowing seedlings to establish away from planted trees. NC State Extension discusses the species’ invasive offspring and related concerns in its Callery pear overview.
Can you plant or buy one where you live?
Rules are location-specific and may change. The National Invasive Species Information Center summarizes restrictions including Ohio’s prohibition on sale, growth or planting and a South Carolina nursery-sales ban. Those examples do not establish the law for other states or localities.
Michigan’s official invasive-species page says that, under a 2026 order, it will become unlawful beginning January 1, 2028 to introduce, import, sell, possess with intent to distribute, or intentionally propagate Callery pear. Check the current state and local rules before buying, planting, distributing or recommending the tree.

An Illinois Department of Natural Resources assessment published around 2025 reported five states regulating Callery pear and at least fourteen listing it as invasive. Oregon State’s 25-state figure describes reported establishment outside cultivation, a different measure from legal regulation or invasive listings.

If Callery pear is restricted or discouraged where you live, choose a flowering tree suited to your region and planting site. NC State Extension provides context for considering native alternatives, but the right replacement depends on local climate, soil, available space and the purpose of the planting. Consult a local extension service or native-plant authority for recommendations tailored to your area.
Rank #4
- PLANTING SEASON: Best planted in fall or early spring when soil temperatures are between 40-50°F for optimal germination
- MATURE SIZE: Trees grow to impressive heights of 30-50 feet with a spread of 20-30 feet at full maturity
- FLOWERING: Produces clusters of white blossoms in early spring, creating a stunning ornamental display
- GROWTH RATE: Fast-growing variety that can achieve 12-15 inches of growth per year in proper conditions
- ADAPTABILITY: Tolerates various soil types and urban conditions, thriving in USDA hardiness zones 5-9
For a construction or landscape plan, also account for the tree’s estimated 15-foot width and confirm that the proposed location has room for its eventual canopy and root system. Local planting guidance can help match the species to the site and avoid conflicts with nearby structures or infrastructure.
