Water lettuce (Pistia stratiotes) is a free-floating aquatic plant that can spread into dense mats. Those mats may shade native plants, reduce oxygen in the water, and obstruct waterways. Avoid planting or releasing it, clean boats and equipment before moving between waterbodies, and check local rules before handling or disposing of a suspected infestation.
How to identify water lettuce
Water lettuce grows as pale-green floating rosettes. Its leaves are thick, rounded, ridged, and covered in short white hairs; long, feathery roots hang below the plant. Runner stems can form new clusters, helping it spread across the water’s surface. These features are described by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and Michigan’s invasive species program.
If you need to confirm an identification or find out whether it has been reported nearby, consult your local invasive-species or natural-resources agency. Distribution and rules differ by location.
Why water lettuce can be a problem
It can crowd and shade aquatic life
When water lettuce forms dense mats, it can block sunlight from reaching submerged native plants and crowd out native plants and animals. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service risk screening also reports habitat loss and declines in native species associated with the plant.

It can affect water quality and water movement
Dense growth can lower dissolved oxygen, which may harm aquatic life, and restrict water flow. These effects depend on conditions at a particular site; a floating plant is not necessarily causing the same level of harm in every waterbody.
It can interfere with people’s use of waterways
Florida’s wildlife agency lists impediments to boating, recreation, flood control, and wildlife use, as well as favorable habitat for mosquito breeding, among the concerns associated with dense populations. The USFWS screening also notes interference with navigation and water infrastructure.

How quickly can it spread?
Growth statements describe different measures and conditions, so they should not be treated as a single universal rate. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission says, “Under optimal environmental conditions, water-lettuce can double its population size in less than three weeks.” Michigan’s 2025 risk assessment, citing Foxcroft (2013), says Pistia stratiotes can double in biomass in as little as a few days. Population size and biomass are different measures, and actual growth depends on environmental conditions.
Michigan’s 2025 assessment also describes rapid vegetative spread and warns that mechanical cultivation or disruption may increase daughter plants capable of reproducing. That is why casual pulling or using a generic removal tool is not a dependable recommendation for every site.

How to avoid spreading water lettuce
Ontario’s guidance offers practical prevention steps for aquarium and water-garden owners and for people moving between waterbodies:
- Do not plant water lettuce in an aquarium or water garden.
- Do not release unwanted aquarium plants or pets into the environment.
- After each use, inspect boats, trailers, and equipment. Remove plants, animals, and mud before moving to another waterbody.
- For unwanted plants, Ontario advises returning or donating them to a garden centre or pet store, or putting them in the garbage. Check local disposal guidance first, because requirements vary.

What to do if you find it
- Confirm the plant. Compare it with the identification features above, and contact a local natural-resources or invasive-species authority if you are unsure.
- Check local reporting and handling guidance. Ask the relevant authority whether sightings should be reported and what response is appropriate for that waterbody.
- Do not assume removal is simple. Mechanical disturbance can increase daughter plants, and a method suitable at one site may be unsuitable at another. For established growth, seek qualified, location-specific advice.
- Follow local disposal rules. Do not move plants to another waterbody or dispose of them based on another jurisdiction’s guidance.
Water lettuce laws vary by location
Restrictions are not uniform. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission says possessing water lettuce in Florida without a special permit is illegal. Michigan states that, effective June 19, 2026, it is unlawful there to introduce, import, sell, possess with intent to distribute, or intentionally propagate the plant; see Michigan’s official page. The Government of Slovenia says water lettuce is on the applicable EU invasive alien species list, under which import, reproduction, cultivation, transport, purchase, sale, use, exchange, possession, and release are prohibited.
These are examples, not a complete survey of local law. Before buying, keeping, moving, propagating, or disposing of the plant, check the current rules with the regulator responsible for your location.
