Spray polyurethane foam (SPF) insulation can slow heat flow and seal air leaks in one application, but the right product depends on the job and the building assembly. Open-cell and closed-cell foams differ in density, rigidity, water behavior, and vapor permeability; a small-gap can is not a stand-in for professional insulation work. Good results also depend on moisture planning, trained application where needed, and a clear safety and re-entry plan.
What is spray foam insulation?
SPF is a plastic foam made when components react during application and expand into place. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) describes it as an insulation material and air sealant. Because it can fill irregular spaces while limiting air leakage, it is used in building-envelope insulation as well as targeted air-sealing work.
Product type matters. EPA distinguishes professional high-pressure, two-component systems used for larger insulation applications from low-pressure kits and one-component cans commonly used for air sealing and smaller tasks. Some foam products can expand substantially after application; EPA’s archived product guidance says foam in its described application context can expand up to 120 times its original volume. That is a source-specific statement, not a result to expect from every product.
Open-cell vs. closed-cell spray foam: how do they differ?
Open-cell and closed-cell foams are not interchangeable simply because both insulate and air-seal. Their typical physical and moisture properties influence how an insulated wall, roof, or other assembly should be designed.

| Property | Open-cell SPF | Closed-cell SPF |
|---|---|---|
| Typical density and feel | About 0.5 lb/ft³ in the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Building America guide; softer and more flexible. | About 2.0 lb/ft³ in the DOE guide; denser and rigid. |
| Typical aged R-value per inch | About R-3.6/in. in the DOE guide, approximately 2009. EPA’s archived overview gives a rounded figure of about R-3.5/in. | About R-6.1/in. in the DOE guide, approximately 2009. EPA’s archived overview gives a rounded figure of about R-6.5/in. |
| Vapor and liquid-water behavior | The DOE guide reports 5–10 perms at 5 inches and says it is not vapor-impermeable. It can absorb and hold liquid water. | The DOE guide reports below 1 perm at 2 inches and describes it as hydrophobic and vapor-retarding at typical thicknesses. |
| Common application context | EPA identifies low-density open-cell foam among high-pressure products used for larger insulation applications and hybrid air sealing. | EPA identifies medium-density “2 lb.” and high-density “3 lb.” closed-cell foam among high-pressure products; it also lists high-density closed-cell foam for roofing. |
These are typical material figures, not guaranteed ratings for a product or a complete assembly. The R-value estimates come from different sources: the DOE figures are aged typical values in an approximately 2009 guide, while EPA’s archived overview gives rounded estimates and no publication date. Formulations vary, so use the current technical data for the product actually specified.
Which type should you use?
There is no unconditional winner. Closed-cell foam’s higher typical R-value per inch and vapor-retarding behavior may be useful where those properties fit the design. Open-cell foam’s softer, more vapor-permeable character may suit other assemblies. The choice depends on the location, climate, existing materials, moisture sources, drying paths, and intended control layers—not just the R-value.
Do not treat hydrophobic foam or a low-perm rating as a complete moisture strategy. Water can enter an assembly through leaks or other routes, and an assembly still needs a safe way to manage and dry moisture. Have the proposed assembly evaluated for the specific building rather than choosing foam by category alone.
What can spray foam insulation be used for?
Larger insulation applications
EPA associates professional high-pressure, two-component SPF systems with larger insulation applications and hybrid air sealing. These systems include low-density “half-pound” open-cell foam and medium-density “2 lb.” or high-density “3 lb.” closed-cell products. EPA also lists high-density closed-cell foam for roofing. The exact product and application must match the design and manufacturer’s requirements.

Smaller air-sealing and weatherization tasks
EPA describes low-pressure two-component kits as products used for air sealing, adhesives, and smaller insulation or weatherization work. One-component foam cans are intended for localized gaps, cracks, holes, and crevices, such as small gaps around windows and doors. They are a practical category for limited sealing—not a replacement for insulating an entire wall or building with a properly designed and installed system.
Can you install spray foam insulation yourself?
It depends on the product and the scope. EPA calls a two-component high-pressure kit a professional system for trained applicators. It should not be treated as a casual homeowner project: application involves reactive chemicals, specialized equipment, containment, and controlled ventilation.
Low-pressure kits and one-component cans may be available to DIY users, but EPA says the same precautions apply. Read the specific product’s instructions and safety data, understand the exposure risks, and consider a trained professional. If the job is more than a localized gap, or if the area is difficult to access or part of a larger insulation assembly, seek a qualified installer.
Is spray foam insulation safe?
SPF chemicals can be harmful during application and other work that disturbs the foam. EPA identifies isocyanates in Side A; Side B contains polyol and may include catalysts, flame retardants, blowing agents, and surfactants. Exposure can occur during application, after application, during sanding or other heat-generating work, and in fires. Potential routes include aerosols, vapors, and dust.

- Strong Adhesion on All Surfaces-Adheres strongly to wood, concrete, metal, glass, brick, drywall and more, expanding to fill gaps and uneven areas. Recommended 2-inch application depth helps reduce airflow, limit moisture intrusion and minimize condensation for more efficient insulation.Adheres to many clean and dry building materials such as wood, concrete, brick, drywall, masonry, stone, and cool metal. Surfaces should be free from dust, oil, moisture, and loose debris before application.
EPA lists asthma, sensitization, lung damage, other respiratory problems, and skin or eye irritation among possible health effects. A safe plan should address both the application period and any later work that could expose people to foam dust or fumes.
What a responsible installation plan includes
- Containment: Enclose the work area to limit movement of aerosols, mists, and vapors to other parts of the building.
- Ventilation: Direct airflow across the work area and exhaust safely outdoors. EPA says ventilation can reduce airborne contaminants and should continue after application as directed.
- Occupant and trade exclusion: Other trades and occupants should not be in the building during installation.
- Protective equipment and cleanup: The applicator should use appropriate PPE and follow product-specific procedures for handling, cleanup, and waste.
- Written re-entry instructions: Confirm timing with the manufacturer and the installer, based on the exact product and the completed ventilation and cleanup.
How long after spray foam installation can you re-enter the house?
There is no universal re-entry time in EPA’s guidance. EPA notes that some manufacturers recommend 24 hours, while also stating that recommendations vary. Do not treat 24 hours as a rule for every product or project; follow the manufacturer’s directions for the foam used and confirm that the area has been fully ventilated and cleaned before occupants return.

For larger work, ask for the details that let you evaluate the proposed material, assembly, installation controls, and price. EPA points readers to the Spray Polyurethane Foam Alliance (SPFA) Professional Certification Program; verify current program availability and the installer’s qualifications directly.
- What is the exact foam product, and can you provide its current technical data and safety data?
- What areas will be sprayed, and what thickness and scope are included in writing?
- How have you assessed the substrate and existing moisture conditions?
- How will the proposed foam work with the building’s air, thermal, and moisture-control layers?
- What containment, ventilation, PPE, and cleanup procedures will be used?
- When must occupants and other trades leave, and what product-specific re-entry instructions apply?
- Can you provide a current, itemized bid that separates included work from exclusions?
Current installed costs depend on location, project conditions, product, and scope. A DOE Building America guide from approximately 2009 lists historical installed-cost ranges of $0.35–$0.40 per board foot for open-cell and $1.10–$1.25 per board foot for closed-cell foam. Those figures are not current estimates; obtain current local bids instead.
