Tankless water heaters can provide continuous hot water and avoid the standby losses of storing a full tank—but they are not unlimited, maintenance-free, or automatically cheaper. Performance depends on the unit’s capacity, incoming-water temperature, household demand, installation, and water quality. These U.S.-oriented answers focus on whole-home systems; local codes and costs vary.
Myth: Tankless water heaters provide unlimited hot water
Tankless units heat water as it flows, so they can keep supplying hot water while demand remains within the system’s capacity. That is not the same as unlimited output. The key constraints are simultaneous flow and the temperature rise required: colder incoming water means the heater must work harder to reach the set temperature.
ENERGY STAR describes continuous hot-water delivery for certified gas tankless units, while the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) says practical sizing should account for the maximum flow needed at one time and the required heat rise. In its whole-home gas tankless explanation, ENERGY STAR notes that a qualifying unit heats water as needed; its buying guidance recommends estimating simultaneous uses and sizing by gallons per minute (GPM).
How to think about capacity
- List the fixtures and appliances that may use hot water at the same time.
- Estimate their combined flow, then ask what output the heater can sustain at your home’s required temperature rise—not just its maximum advertised flow.
- Have an experienced installer size the equipment for your actual demand and incoming-water conditions.
Myth: A tankless heater always saves money
Removing the storage tank eliminates the energy used to keep stored water hot. ENERGY STAR says tankless models can be more efficient than standard tank-type heaters, but greater efficiency does not guarantee a lower total cost or a particular payback for every household. The result depends on the equipment, fuel, energy prices, household use, and what changes are needed to install it.

One specific ENERGY STAR comparison says a certified gas tankless unit using a secondary heat exchanger uses 9 percent less energy than a conventional gas tankless water heater. That comparison applies to that product configuration, not all tankless heaters. The DOE Building America guide, published in 2012, discusses higher initial installed costs and notes that operating-cost comparisons depend on fuel and equipment efficiency; its cost and payback context is historical, not a current quote or guarantee.
Compare a home-specific installed estimate and expected operating costs rather than treating an efficiency label as proof of household savings.

Myth: Cold weather makes tankless impossible
Cold weather is a sizing and installation consideration, not a blanket reason to rule out tankless. Colder winter inlet water requires a greater temperature rise to reach the desired hot-water temperature, which affects the flow a given unit can deliver. A system sized for warmer incoming water may not meet the same demand in a colder location.
For gas equipment in cold climates, DOE Building Science Education guidance discusses sealed-combustion, direct-vent, or power-vented equipment. It also advises positioning intake and exhaust above anticipated snow levels and separating them to limit frost buildup. Follow the specific model’s installation instructions and local requirements; these details are not universal rules for every model or climate.

Myth: Tankless water heaters are maintenance-free
Minerals can form scale or lime deposits in the heat exchanger. That buildup can restrict water flow and shorten the unit’s life, so maintenance still matters. Flush the heater according to the installed model’s manufacturer instructions and use procedures and materials compatible with that model.
The DOE Building America guide published in 2012 reported that manufacturer-recommended flushing intervals varied from twice a year to once every three years, depending on model, use, and water quality. That historical range illustrates why one schedule should not be treated as universal; check the current instructions for the unit in your home.

Myth: Tankless delivery is always perfectly steady
A brief “cold-water sandwich” can occur after frequent on-and-off draws: a short burst of cooler water enters the hot-water line between uses. The DOE Building America guide describes the effect as relatively infrequent and lasting a few seconds; it says it does not occur during steady water use. If you notice a persistent or substantial temperature problem, do not assume this brief effect is the cause—have the system assessed.

The unit is only one part of the system. ENERGY STAR recommends an experienced plumber estimate household demand and confirm sizing, gas-line capacity, nearby electricity for forced-vent models, venting, permits, and local building-code knowledge. The DOE’s technical guide also highlights water quality, water-supply line capacity, utility service, and the hot-water distribution layout.

Because existing homes differ, request an in-home assessment and written, home-specific estimate. Do not assume a universal retrofit cost or that existing fuel, electrical, venting, and plumbing arrangements will suit a new unit.
How to compare tankless options for your home
Certification thresholds can help screen products, but they do not determine which unit can serve a particular home. ENERGY STAR’s key product criteria, accessed in 2026, list gas-fired instantaneous water heater requirements including UEF of at least 0.95 and maximum flow of at least 2.8 GPM over a 67°F rise, alongside warranty and safety criteria. Those are certification requirements, not a recommendation for your home’s needed flow rate.
- Capacity at the required rise: Compare maximum simultaneous flow against the temperature rise your location and hot-water setpoint require.
- Energy performance: Compare standardized ratings for the applicable product category rather than assuming every tankless model performs alike.
- Installation requirements: Confirm fuel-line capacity, electrical supply, venting, plumbing, permits, and code requirements for the specific model and home.
- Water quality and upkeep: Ask how local water conditions affect maintenance and what the manufacturer requires.
- Warranty and safety criteria: Review the model’s warranty and applicable certification details.
- Total installed cost: Compare estimates for your home, including any service or installation changes, alongside expected operating costs.
For a home-specific assessment, the most useful starting point is a qualified installer who can measure or estimate demand and review the existing services and layout before recommending a unit.
