There is no single best wood for every outdoor furniture project. Teak and redwood have documented outdoor-furniture uses; western redcedar heartwood is described as very resistant to decay. White oak, black locust, eucalyptus, and acacia are also identified in a European Commission report as outdoor-furniture woods. The right choice depends on exposure, design, weight, maintenance expectations, budget, local availability, and how the timber was sourced.
What matters when choosing outdoor furniture wood
Outdoor performance depends on more than a species name. Consider where the furniture will sit, how it is built, and what you expect from its appearance and upkeep.
- Exposure: Is the piece uncovered in rain and sun, shaded, or stored seasonally? Prolonged wetness is a relevant concern, but the available sources do not provide a species-by-climate performance ranking.
- Construction and use: Furniture design and the way it is used matter alongside the wood. A species-level description is not a guarantee for every board or finished piece.
- Weight and surface wear: These properties may matter if you move furniture often or expect it to take knocks.
- Finish and upkeep: Decide whether retaining a particular color or finish matters to you. The sources do not establish universal oiling, sealing, or cleaning schedules for these species.
- Cost and availability: Both vary by location, grade, market, and construction. No comparable current prices are established here.
How the main wood options compare
| Wood | What the cited sources establish | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Teak | The USDA Forest Products Laboratory records uses including furniture and boat construction; the European Commission Joint Research Centre (JRC) lists teak among woods used in outdoor furniture. USDA Forest Products Laboratory; JRC report. | These sources do not quantify outdoor lifespan, price, or maintenance frequency, so they do not establish that teak is the best choice for every buyer. |
| Western redcedar | The USDA handbook describes its heartwood as very resistant to decay. It also characterizes the wood as lightweight and moderately soft. USDA Forest Products Laboratory. | Low weight can be useful when moving furniture. Softness and the handbook’s note of low strength when used as a beam or post are relevant to design and use; the beam-or-post observation is not, by itself, a furniture performance rating. |
| Redwood | The USDA handbook describes redwood as durable and lists outdoor furniture among its uses. USDA Forest Products Laboratory. | The cited source does not compare its cost or performance directly with teak or cedar. |
| White oak and black locust | The JRC report names both among woods used in outdoor furniture and discusses physical characteristics associated with rot resistance and moisture prevention. JRC report. | This general report statement is not a guarantee for every board, design, or exposure condition. |
| Eucalyptus and acacia | The JRC report lists these as woods used in outdoor furniture. JRC report. | The cited sources do not establish a more detailed durability ranking or maintenance comparison for either wood. |
Is teak worth it for patio furniture?
Teak is a documented furniture wood, and the JRC report includes it among species used in outdoor furniture. That makes it a relevant option to compare, not a guarantee of a particular lifespan or a reason to assume it suits every budget and setting. Before buying, compare the piece’s construction, finish, intended exposure, and sourcing information; the cited sources do not provide a current price comparison or a maintenance schedule.
What wood lasts longest outside?
The sources do not establish a single longest-lasting outdoor furniture wood or provide comparable lifespan figures. They do offer species-specific context: the USDA describes western redcedar heartwood as very resistant to decay and redwood as durable, while the JRC discusses white oak and black locust in connection with rot resistance and moisture prevention. Those descriptions are useful evidence, but they are not a controlled head-to-head test or a prediction for a particular chair, table, climate, or board.

- Helps Prevent Water Damage
- Helps Maintain Natural Color-Dries Clear
- Use as a wood sealer, brick sealer, or for concrete waterproofing
- Soap and water cleanup
- For concrete, brick, masonry and wood
Pay attention to the word heartwood: the USDA statement about western redcedar applies to heartwood, not automatically to sapwood or every part of a board. Ask what timber a product uses and how the furniture is intended to handle its exposure.
Choosing wood for a DIY outdoor bench
Start with the bench’s location and design, then choose a species for which you can verify the relevant properties and sourcing. Western redcedar’s low weight may suit a bench that needs to be moved, while its moderate softness and the USDA handbook’s beam-or-post strength note are factors to consider in the design. Redwood, teak, white oak, black locust, eucalyptus, and acacia are other documented outdoor-furniture options, but the evidence cited here does not establish equivalent performance or a best choice for every build.

- Confirm the lumber species rather than relying on a broad label such as “outdoor wood.”
- Consider which parts of the project will be exposed to rain and prolonged wetness.
- Choose a finish based on the appearance and upkeep you want; do not assume a universal treatment schedule from the species name.
- Check the seller’s stated origin and any verifiable sourcing documentation.
Why timber sourcing belongs in the decision
The European Commission JRC’s 2016 preliminary report on EU Ecolabel and Green Public Procurement criteria says that “the key environmental aspects of solid wood are mainly related to the legal and sustainable character of the originating forest management.” It also connects uncontrolled logging with biodiversity loss, erosion, and soil degradation. The report provides environmental context, not a current certification rule or an audit of a particular product. Ask where the wood came from and whether the seller can substantiate any responsible-sourcing claim; a species name alone does not prove it.
