The Best Tips for Buying Plants at IKEA

Match a plant to its real home conditions, inspect it before checkout, and check local availability. IKEA US does not accept plant returns.

The best way to buy a plant at IKEA is to choose for the spot you have at home, then check the individual plant’s label and condition before checkout. IKEA US says its plant assortment varies by store and season, and its US return policy excludes plants—so confirm local stock and make sure the plant fits your light, space, care routine, and household before you buy.

Start with the place the plant will live

Before shopping, note where the plant will go and how much natural light that spot gets during the day. IKEA’s indoor plant guidance groups light needs as shade, indirect light, and full sun. Use the care label on the specific plant to check which category fits; a plant that looks attractive in the store may not suit a darker corner or a bright window.

Measure or estimate the available floor, shelf, or windowsill space, too. Check the plant’s size and expected placement against that space rather than relying on how it looks among other plants at the store.

IKEA’s beginner guide mentions LED cultivation bulbs for spaces without light. Treat one as a conditional option, not a fix for every mismatch: check the plant’s needs and whether the light can support them. An optional saucer or decorative outer pot may also help with presentation or excess water; the plant can remain in its original planter.

Check the label and match care to your routine

Read the care information on the plant you are considering. IKEA describes its water-drop icons as rough watering-frequency guides, not fixed rules. Its general guidance associates one drop with watering once a week or every second or third week, depending on the plant; two drops with once or twice a week while avoiding standing water; and three drops with two to three times a week while keeping the top half-inch of soil from drying. These are broad IKEA guides, not universal schedules.

Check the soil before watering. IKEA advises skipping a watering when soil sticks to your thumb, and its guidance cautions against leaving standing water for plants whose care instructions warn against it. Follow the specific label and the soil’s condition rather than watering automatically by the calendar.

Think honestly about the time you can give the plant. Compare its care directions with your routine before buying, and consider whether you will remember regular checks and watering. A small watering can is an optional convenience; IKEA features watering cans and misters in its plant-care materials, but no particular tool is required.

Use plant examples as a shortlist, not a stock guarantee

IKEA’s catalog names snake plants, aloe, bonsai, and succulents among examples of plants it may offer. Its indoor guidance also points to choices for partial light, including dragon tree, and lists easy-care examples. These names can help you browse, but they are not a promise of availability or a substitute for checking each plant’s light and care requirements.

Inspect the individual plant before checkout

Look at the particular plant you plan to take home, not just its species name or the display around it. Read its label and inspect it closely before paying. IKEA does not publish a formal inspection checklist in the cited guidance, so there is no IKEA-specific test to apply; a careful look is simply a sensible step when the purchase cannot be returned under the US policy.

Check pet suitability and avoid buying unnecessary supplies

IKEA warns that some plants can make pets sick if ingested, but its catalog does not provide an exhaustive toxicity list. If a pet may chew plants, verify the exact species’ suitability before buying rather than relying on a general “pet-safe” assumption.

You usually do not need to buy a replacement pot right away. IKEA says plants generally do not need repotting during the first year. It gives an example of choosing a pot 2–3 inches larger than the previous one when repotting is needed, but that is not a reason to purchase a new pot with every plant. An outer pot or saucer is optional; IKEA notes that an outer pot can change the look while the plant stays in its nursery planter, and a saucer can catch excess water.

IKEA also says plants it sells usually have enough fertilizer for 1–3 months; after that, monthly feeding during the peak growing cycle may be appropriate. This is undated IKEA guidance, not a study result. Check the plant’s own instructions before adding fertilizer.

Know the IKEA US return rule before you pay

IKEA US says it does not accept returns on plants. Its policy also says purchases made abroad cannot be returned through IKEA US. This makes it especially important to check the individual plant, its care label, and its fit for your home before checkout; do not assume the standard return period applies to a plant.

Quick Recap

A quick pre-checkout list

  • Does the light at home match the plant’s label?
  • Do you have enough room for the plant where you intend to place it?
  • Can you meet the care guidance, and have you checked the soil rather than treating watering icons as a rigid schedule?
  • Have you inspected the specific plant you are buying?
  • If you have pets, have you checked the exact species?
  • Have you confirmed local availability and decided whether any optional pot, saucer, watering can, or grow light is actually useful?
