For cellular PVC trim boards joined to each other, use a PVC trim adhesive or cement approved for your board and joint, prepare smooth, clean mating surfaces, and mechanically secure the joint as the board manufacturer directs. The right adhesive and joint details depend on the board brand and whether you are bonding PVC to PVC or attaching it to another material.
Choose an adhesive for the materials being joined
For PVC-to-PVC trim joints, select a product made for cellular PVC trim and named or approved by the board manufacturer. VERSATEX lists PVC cement and cellular PVC adhesives for its simulated-wood trim, while AZEK specifies its Cellular PVC Cement for AZEK-to-AZEK joints. See VERSATEX product and installation resources and AZEK product resources for current instructions.
Do not assume that an adhesive suitable for PVC trim will also bond it reliably to wood, masonry, metal, or another substrate. Check the adhesive maker’s compatibility guidance for that exact combination. Nor should ordinary plumbing cement be treated as universally interchangeable with trim adhesive: the cited manufacturer guidance does not establish that equivalence.
Prepare and secure a PVC-to-PVC joint
Fit and clean the mating surfaces
Make sure the faces meet smoothly and completely, and clean them as the product instructions require. AZEK’s installation guide says, “For best results, surfaces to be glued should be smooth, clean and in complete contact with each other.” Poor fit or contamination can undermine the bond.

- IDEAL FOR: PVC JOINTS AND COLUMN WRAP INSTALLATION
- RECOMMENDED FOR: CONSTRUCTION OF PVC TRIM MITER, SHIPLAP AND SCARF JOINTS ALONG WITH COLUMN WRAP INSTALLATION
- HIGH STRENGTH, PERMANENT BOND
- SINGLE COMPONENT FOR EASE OF USE
- 100% WATERPROOF
Apply adhesive and fasten the joint
For an AZEK-to-AZEK joint, use AZEK Cellular PVC Cement on the prepared mating surfaces, bring the pieces together, and fasten each side of the joint as directed in the guide. VERSATEX also pairs adhesive with mechanical fastening; its guidance describes reinforcement for bonded joints. Adhesive bonds the boards to one another, while the specified fasteners help secure the assembly. Do not rely on glue alone to attach trim to the building.
Fastener type and placement depend on the board, substrate, and application. Follow the current installation guide rather than choosing a fastener by board material alone.
Rank #2
- 2-in-1 Adhesive & Sealant: Advanced polymer formula bonds and seals PVC trim, molding, deck railing, and beadboard in a single product for faster, more efficient installations.
- Flexible & Durable Bond: Tenacious adhesion that expands and contracts with PVC, reducing the risk of product failure while maintaining a weather-tight seal.
- Bonds Virtually Any Material: Sticks PVC to wood, metal, masonry, other PVC, and most substrates, including non-porous surfaces.
- Extreme Weather Performance: Extrudable in temperatures as low as 0°F, UV-resistant, weatherproof, and maintains integrity in harsh conditions.
- Voc-Compliant & Professional Finish: Meets green building standards, dries white to match trim boards, resists yellowing and cracking, and provides great handling and application.
Choose the joint shape for the application
Center splices
For an AZEK center splice, the installation guide recommends a scarf joint rather than a butt joint, with two fasteners on each side. A scarf creates a longer bonded interface than a square-ended butt joint. Follow the board maker’s instructions for the exact layout and fastening details.
Corners and other joints
For corners, use the joint geometry and reinforcement specified for the board and application; the center-splice recommendation does not automatically apply to miters or every corner detail. Thin boards or narrow pieces may offer limited room for fasteners, so check the manufacturer’s instructions before cutting or fastening rather than assuming adhesive alone is sufficient.

Account for movement on long exterior runs
Exterior PVC trim can move with temperature changes. VERSATEX’s fastening guidance addresses constraining board movement with fastening and planning expansion-joint locations. A glued seam does not eliminate thermal movement or replace the installation schedule. Where a detail calls for a movement gap or flexible sealant, use a compatible sealant for that purpose; it is not a substitute for PVC-to-PVC bonding adhesive.

The AZEK guide cited for its Cellular PVC Cement gives a 10-minute working time and a 24-hour full cure. Those figures apply to that named product and guide, not to PVC adhesives generally. VERSATEX warns that PVC cements can have short working times. Read the current package label and product instructions for the adhesive you are using, and plan fitting and fastening accordingly.

- How PVC Glue Creates a Strong Bond: The PVC trim adhesive uses solvent welding technology to soften the outer layer of PVC materials. When pressed together, the softened surfaces fuse into one strong connection. As the solvent evaporates, it forms a durable joint that provides lasting strength and stability for PVC trim, moulding, and other PVC projects
- Quick 30-Second Initial Drying: Get efficient installation with PVC trim glue that develops an initial bond in about 30 seconds, making it easier to complete trim, joint, and repair projects with less waiting time. For best results, test fit parts and confirm alignment before applying adhesive. Allow 24–72 hours for full curing depending on project conditions
- Clear Finish for Visible Applications: The clear adhesive helps maintain a clean, professional appearance without distracting glue lines or visible residue. Ideal for exposed areas such as PVC trim boards, moulding, millwork, and decorative joints where appearance is important
- Reliable Bond for Indoor & Outdoor Projects: This PVC adhesive provides strong, durable adhesion for interior and exterior applications. It helps create reliable connections for PVC components exposed to moisture, changing weather, and temperature fluctuations, while accommodating the natural expansion and contraction of PVC materials for long-lasting construction and repair projects
- Complete PVC Glue Kit with Extra Supplies: Get everything needed for your PVC projects in one package. This PVC glue kit includes two 3.38 oz. (100ml) bottles of clear adhesive and two pairs of black nitrile gloves, providing extra glue for larger installations, repairs, and future projects while helping keep hands cleaner during application
Before you bond
- Confirm that the adhesive is approved for your board and the materials being joined.
- Dry-fit the joint and verify full contact before applying adhesive.
- Use the specified mechanical fasteners and joint details.
- For long exterior runs, follow the board maker’s guidance for movement and expansion joints.
- Use current product labels and installation instructions for application, working time, and cure time.
