The Best Time to Water Your Lawn in a Heatwave

Water an established lawn early in the morning during a heatwave, and decide whether to irrigate by checking for stress, rainfall and local conditions.

Water an established lawn in the early morning, ideally just before or around sunrise. Cooler, calmer conditions help limit evaporation, and watering early gives grass blades time to dry during the day. In a heatwave, let the lawn’s condition, rainfall, soil, grass type and local watering rules—not temperature alone—determine whether it needs water.

Why early morning is the best time

Early watering lets moisture soak into the soil before heat and wind increase evaporation or disturb sprinkler coverage. Iowa State University Extension gives 5:00–9:00 a.m. as a regional guideline; UF/IFAS recommends watering just before or around sunrise. These are not universal clock requirements, but both point to the same principle: irrigate early.

Midday watering can lose more water to evaporation, while wind may make sprinkler coverage uneven. Watering late in the day or at night can leave grass foliage wet for longer, which Iowa State and UF/IFAS warn may increase disease risk. If the lawn is severely stressed and morning is not practical, do not treat that caution as a reason to leave it without water.

Decide whether the lawn needs water

Heat alone is not a reliable watering signal. Check the grass and account for recent rain, soil, shade and turf type. Signs of water stress include:

  • Grass blades folding or curling.
  • Footprints that remain visible after you walk across the lawn.
  • Grayish patches or, for cool-season grass, a bluish-green color.

UF/IFAS and Iowa State Extension describe these symptoms as indicators that established turf may need water. If rain has already supplied enough moisture, skip an automatic cycle rather than watering by habit.

Water deeply, but avoid runoff

Less frequent, deeper watering is generally preferable to frequent, light sprinkling: shallow applications can encourage shallow roots. The right amount depends on the grass, soil, region and conditions, so do not apply a Florida or Iowa recommendation as a universal heatwave target.

For context, Iowa State Extension recommends 1 to 1.5 inches per week for most Iowa lawns, applied once or possibly twice, three to four days apart. UF/IFAS Extension Okaloosa County’s 2026 guidance recommends ½ to ¾ inch per watering when Florida turf shows wilt, then waiting until stress signs return before watering again. UF/IFAS also notes that soil affects the amount: sandy South Florida soils may need the higher end of its ½–¾-inch-per-session range, while heavier North Florida clay soils may need the lower end.

Measure your sprinkler instead of guessing at runtime

Sprinkler output varies, so a set number of minutes does not reliably tell you how much water reached the lawn. Catch cans or rain gauges can show both application depth and uneven coverage.

  1. Place straight-sided containers around the sprinkler pattern. For a hose-end sprinkler, UF/IFAS suggests setting cans in a line from the sprinkler toward the edge of the watered area. For an in-ground system, spread cans across one zone.
  2. Run one sprinkler or zone at a time. This makes it easier to see which areas receive more or less water.
  3. Measure the collected water. Use the depth in the containers to estimate how much the system applies and whether coverage is even.
  4. Adjust the runtime to your local guidance. Stop or split watering if water begins running off rather than soaking in.

Account for rain, lawn conditions and local rules

Adjust watering for rainfall, soil, shade and turf species. A rain shutoff sensor can help an automatic system skip irrigation after adequate rainfall, but check that it works with your system and follow local watering restrictions. An optional hose-end timer can schedule early-morning watering; it cannot determine whether the lawn needs water or whether rain has already supplied enough.

This guidance is for established lawns. Newly seeded or newly sodded grass can have different watering needs, so follow instructions suited to that lawn and check local extension guidance.
