A string trimmer is the practical choice for routine lawn-edge maintenance and grass a mower cannot reach. For a deeper, sharply defined border, choose a dedicated blade edger. The original 2021 ranked review and its test results could not be verified, so this guide explains how to compare the tools without presenting current products as 2021 winners.
String trimmer or dedicated lawn edger?
The tools make different cuts. A string trimmer uses rotating line to trim grass and maintain a shallow edge; a dedicated lawn edger uses a rotating blade to cut a narrower, deeper border. A convertible trimmer can switch between trimming and edging modes, but that does not make its line cut equivalent to a blade-edged trench. Troy-Bilt’s category guide explains the distinction.
- Choose a string trimmer for grass around fences, trees, beds, and other places a mower cannot reach, or for maintaining an existing lawn edge.
- Choose a blade edger when you want to establish a deeper, more defined line along a walk or driveway.
As one manufacturer example—not an independent test or award—Troy-Bilt lists its TBE304 dedicated edger with a 9-inch dual-tipped steel blade and a stated maximum cutting depth of 1.75 inches. Those specifications apply to that model alone.
How to choose a string trimmer
Match the power source to the work
Gas, corded electric, and battery-powered models each involve trade-offs. Cordless and corded electric tools are often a reasonable place to start for smaller yards; gas may suit larger areas or longer sessions. These are general guidelines, not guarantees: actual runtime, vegetation, obstacles, and the amount of edging determine what works. Consider battery runtime or extension-cord management, as well as noise, emissions, and maintenance. The Home Depot’s March 26, 2024 guide discusses these factors.

Check reach, balance, and maneuverability
Straight and curved shafts can differ in reach and how they move around obstacles. Compare tool length, weight, balance, and handle adjustment, especially if the job involves long sessions or tight areas around plants and structures. A tool that fits your reach and handling needs is more useful than one chosen by cutting width alone. Husqvarna’s selection guide also frames choice around experience, frequency of use, and working conditions; it is manufacturer advice, not comparative testing.
Understand the line-feed system
Trimmers may feed line manually, by bumping or tapping the head, or automatically. Check how line is replaced and whether the mechanism suits your work. Line is a consumable, and the correct diameter and type depend on the exact tool. For example, the Stanley FatMax SFMCSTB933M manual specifies 1.65 mm round nylon line for that model; this is not a universal trimmer specification. Abrasive surfaces can wear line more quickly. Read the tool’s manual before buying replacement line or using it on hard edges. Stanley’s instruction manual gives the model-specific details.

Look for useful edging features
A wheel or pivoting head can help guide a convertible trimmer along a hard edge. Check whether the tool can switch modes without awkward adjustments and whether its head can maneuver around the obstacles in your yard. Features such as an edging wheel may improve guidance, but they do not change the cutting method: line still makes a shallower cut than a dedicated blade edger.
What to check before buying
- Your task: routine trimming and edge upkeep, or creating a deeper border?
- Your yard: area, vegetation, obstacles, and access to power or battery charging.
- Handling: shaft shape and length, weight, balance, adjustable handles, and maneuverability.
- Ownership: line replacement and availability, maintenance needs, and battery-platform compatibility if relevant.
- Evidence: distinguish manufacturer specifications and advice from independent test results. Consumer Reports says its trimmer evaluations cover gas and electric models, including battery tools, and consider edging, tall grass and weeds, handling, starting, and line feeding; that current guide does not establish which models ranked best in 2021. Use and safety
Rotating line can throw stones, metal, and other debris. Wear eye protection and hearing protection as appropriate, keep bystanders away, and follow the instructions for your exact model. Do not assume another tool’s line size or safety distances apply to yours.

For a model-specific example, the Stanley FatMax SFMCSTB933M manual directs users to keep people and pets at least 100 feet (30 m) away during edging and warns against using the trimmer to create trenches. Those directions apply to that model; consult your own manual for its safety requirements.
