The Best Chiminea to Buy in 2022: A Historical Buying Guide

The 2022 chiminea picks are historical, but their buying criteria still help: weigh material, portability, weather care, intended use, and safe placement before choosing a model.

There is no single best chiminea for every patio: the right choice depends on whether you value a traditional clay look, a heavy cast-iron unit that stays put, or a lighter steel model that is easier to move. This guide revisits the recommendations and buying advice published around 2022. Those picks are historical, not verified 2026 buying recommendations; check that a model is still available and confirm its current specifications before purchasing.

What the 2022 recommendations can—and cannot—tell you

Popular Mechanics’ March 26, 2022 roundup named the Bali Outdoors Wood-Burning Chimenea as a budget option and the Blue Rooster Gatsby Chiminea as a grilling option, among other products (Popular Mechanics). Real Homes’ guide, last updated July 29, 2022, covered clay, cast-iron, and steel products, including models associated with MADE, La Hacienda, B&Q, and Argos (Real Homes). These are snapshots of editorial selections at the time, not confirmation of current stock, prices, specifications, or retailer relationships.

Gardeningetc’s guide, last updated November 9, 2021, also compared the main materials and included model-specific fuel advice (Gardeningetc). Use any named product as a starting point for checking current manufacturer information—not as an assurance that it remains available or suits your site.

Choose a material for your patio and routine

Material What to weigh Ownership tradeoff
Clay Traditional appearance, weight, local climate, and care Consumer Reports says clay can be heavy and susceptible to freezing and cracking; some clay models may require a screen accessory. Protect it according to the product instructions.
Cast iron Heat retention, weight, rust prevention, and whether the unit will stay in one location Consumer Reports describes cast iron as more durable than clay if rust is kept at bay, but heavy.
Steel Portability, construction, and protection from rain and rust Real Homes says steel is easier to move than heavy cast iron. Its guide recommends considering a weatherproof cover or a chiminea with a rain lid.

These are practical distinctions, not results from standardized head-to-head tests. The cited guides do not establish that one material is universally safest or lasts longest. A lightweight unit may be easier to reposition; a heavy one may be better suited to a permanent spot. In either case, consider the weather exposure and the care the manufacturer requires.

Match the size and features to how you will use it

Measure the intended location and account for the clearances specified by the manufacturer before choosing a size. A chiminea needs space not only for its footprint but also around and above it, away from combustible materials. If you expect to move it, consider the unit’s weight and the route from storage to its use area.

Do not assume a chiminea is a grill. Some 2022 guides highlighted models with grilling features, but suitability for cooking is model-specific. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for whether cooking is allowed and which fuels may be used. Gardeningetc’s 2021 guide, for example, gave fuel guidance that varied by product, including a warning against coal for one listed model; that advice should not be generalized to other chimineas.

Plan the location and fire safety before buying

Consumer Reports advises stable footing and treating placement much like that of a fire pit, with space from combustible materials. It warns that the exterior becomes very hot and says children and pets should stay back. Do not place a chiminea on a wood or composite deck unless the manufacturer recommends a heat shield or masonry beneath it. Follow the instructions for the specific model and local fire rules.

Cal Fire battalion chief of communications Isaac Sanchez advises using a spark arrester when burning wood in a pit or chiminea: “One of the things you want to use when burning wood, either in a pit or a chiminea, is a spark arrester,” (Consumer Reports). A spark screen or arrester is an accessory to match to the model; it does not replace safe clearances, stable placement, or supervision.

Account for weather and storage

Rain and seasonal exposure affect both the appliance and its upkeep. Real Homes recommends considering a weatherproof cover or a model with a rain lid. Gardeningetc’s guide also notes models that need to be stored when not in use. Check the care instructions for your chosen chiminea, including whether it should be covered, moved under shelter, or stored during freezing conditions. A cover or storage plan can help protect the unit, but neither changes the clearances required when it is in use.

A practical shortlist for a 2022-style choice

  • For a traditional look: consider clay, but account for its weight and vulnerability to freezing and cracking.
  • For a more permanent location: cast iron is heavy and requires attention to rust, according to Consumer Reports.
  • For easier repositioning: Real Homes notes that steel is easier to move than heavy cast iron; plan for weather protection.
  • For cooking: select only a model whose manufacturer explicitly permits grilling and specifies appropriate fuel.
  • For any model: verify current availability and specifications, read the instructions, and make sure your chosen site can meet the placement and safety requirements.
