There is no single normal wallpaper width worldwide. Width depends on the brand, product format and market. For example, Sherwin-Williams says wallpaper is generally available in 21-, 27- and 42-inch widths; Sanderson lists a standard roll width of 52 cm; and Spoonflower describes its wallpaper as 24 inches wide. Check the exact product specification before estimating how much to buy.
Common wallpaper widths vary by supplier
The figures below are examples published by individual sellers, not a survey establishing a universal standard. They may refer to different product formats and conventions, so they should not be treated as interchangeable.

How to work out how much wallpaper you need
- Measure every wall. Record the height and width of each wall to be covered. If a wall is uneven, measure in several places and use the largest measurements. Spoonflower’s measuring guide recommends this approach.
- Calculate the number of drops or panels. As a basic estimate, divide the wall width by the product’s usable wallpaper width and round up. Follow the maker’s method if the product is sold in panels or has a specific calculator.
- Allow for height, trimming and pattern. Work out how many complete drops can be cut from each roll using the wall height, trimming allowance and pattern repeat. A matching pattern can require extra length to align the design.
- Use the selected product’s calculator or instructions. Sellers do not all define roll yield in the same way. Sanderson’s guidance explains its method for wallpaper sold by the metre, while Spoonflower’s calculator is designed for its panel and product formats. Avoid applying one seller’s roll assumptions to another product.
- Check batch identifiers when ordering multiple rolls. Sherwin-Williams notes that colours can vary between print batches and suggests buying an extra roll to reduce the risk of running short. Check the product and seller’s guidance for your order.
Should you subtract doors and windows?
Not necessarily. Zepel recommends treating doors and windows as part of the full wall in its calculation, because cutting and piecing around openings can use material. Its guidance also accounts for trimming and pattern-repeat allowances. Follow the selected wallpaper’s instructions rather than assuming openings will reduce the order by their exact area.

- Width and whether the stated measurement is usable width.
- Roll length or panel dimensions, plus the seller’s stated coverage.
- Pattern repeat and match requirements.
- Installation format, such as peel-and-stick or paste-applied, and any format-specific measuring guidance.
- Whether the dimensions apply to the exact product and market you are buying.
These details determine whether two products with similar stated widths will cover the same area. Use the specifications for the wallpaper you plan to install, not a generic width assumption.
