There is no single farrowing-house design that is best for every farm. The strongest design balances sow movement and nesting behavior with piglet protection, localized warmth, clean dry lying areas, safe flooring, ventilation, drainage, and workable staff access. Those priorities apply broadly; dimensions and legal requirements do not. They must be checked against the herd, climate, housing system, and jurisdiction before construction.
What makes a farrowing house work well?
A farrowing house serves animals with different needs. The sow needs space and conditions suited to farrowing, nursing, resting, feeding, and dunging. Newborn piglets need a warm, dry resting area and protection when the sow moves. UK government guidance notes that sow and litter have substantially different thermal comfort zones, so one room temperature may not suit both. It recommends using current information for the specific conditions when designing the system. UK government welfare guidance also says that, in crate systems, piglets should have a heat source and a solid, dry, comfortable lying area away from the sow.
- Behavior: plan for the sow to lie, rise, turn, nest, eat, and dung, with space appropriate to the chosen system.
- Piglet safety: account for the risk of crushing during sow movement; protective features and management both matter.
- Thermal zoning: create a warm piglet resting zone without making the whole room uncomfortable for the sow.
- Hygiene: keep lying areas clean and dry through lactation, and make surfaces and fittings practical to clean and disinfect.
- Building performance: coordinate flooring, drainage, insulation, ventilation, and staff access rather than treating them as separate details.
Choose a housing system around the farm’s priorities
Loose or free-farrowing pens allow more sow movement and can better accommodate nesting behavior, but require deliberate design to protect piglets. Crate-based systems restrict movement; crates are intended to reduce the risk of trampling or overlaying, but do not remove the need for attentive management. UK advisory guidance favors moving away from reliance on crates while recognizing that crates may improve piglet survival under some conditions. The evidence cited here does not establish a universal outcome advantage for either system.
| Design question | Loose or free farrowing | Crate-based farrowing |
|---|---|---|
| Sow movement | More room to turn and express nesting behavior; pen geometry must safely accommodate movement. UK government welfare guidance | Movement is restricted; guidance says confinement should be minimized and the sow should be able to rise and lie down without difficulty. UK government welfare guidance |
| Piglet protection | Include rails or another protective strategy, while recognizing that no feature alone guarantees protection. UK government welfare guidance | The crate is intended to reduce risks from sow movement, but good management remains necessary. Virginia Tech Extension |
| Space and layout | Provide space for nesting, turning, lying, feeding, and dunging. Queensland guidance specifies a local minimum for an uncrated pen; see the dimensions section below. Business Queensland | Size and layout need to suit sow size and allow farrowing, nursing, and access to feed and water. UK government welfare guidance |
| Heat and resting areas | Balance piglet heat and ventilation with sow comfort; a dedicated piglet zone can help. Virginia Tech Extension | UK guidance specifies a piglet heat source and a dry resting area away from the sow. UK government welfare guidance |
The broader performance framework is not just survival: the 2020 Ag Guide identifies preweaning mortality, thermal comfort, sanitation, and opportunities for normal sow and piglet behavior as relevant considerations. 2020 Ag Guide

Plan the pen around animals and daily work
Map sow movement and staff tasks
For an unconfined system, lay out the pen so the sow can nest, turn, rise, lie, and reach feeding and dunging areas. Consider how staff will observe animals, enter the pen, handle routine care, and assist safely when needed. The circulation and access plan should support the work without creating avoidable hazards for sow or litter.
Make a protected piglet resting zone
Loose pens should include rails or another suitable protective feature, as UK guidance advises. Rails are a design component, not a guarantee against crushing: their usefulness depends on the complete pen geometry and management. Provide piglets with a resting area away from the sow, and place its heat source so it serves that zone.

Use localized heat instead of relying on one room setting
Virginia Tech Extension identifies heat mats and heat lamps over piglet sleeping areas as options. Virginia Tech Extension’s swine resources support that practical approach; the appropriate equipment and settings depend on the building and animals. Coordinate localized heat with ventilation and insulation so that warming the piglet area does not come at the expense of air quality or sow comfort.
Coordinate ventilation, moisture, and temperature
Ventilation, insulation, and other building adjustments all affect temperature and air quality. Keep ventilation equipment maintained and operate it according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Plan drainage and moisture control alongside airflow: a dry lying area is easier to maintain when water, washdown, and waste have a clear route out of the pen.

Specify floors for grip, drainage, and cleaning
Floor design has to support animals and sanitation at the same time. UK guidance warns that poor construction, unsuitable slat dimensions, and worn or damaged surfaces can injure pigs. Queensland guidance calls for smooth but non-slip surfaces and provides drainage and construction advice for its setting. Business Queensland pig housing guidance
- Choose surfaces that provide grip without being rough or damaging to feet and legs.
- Match floor construction and any slat dimensions to animal size, age, and weight.
- Inspect for wear, damage, and defects that could cause injury or hinder cleaning.
- Plan drainage and washdown so lying areas can be kept clean and dry.
Use dimensions only in their stated jurisdiction
Business Queensland states that a farrowing pen without a crate must be at least 5.6 m² under the pig welfare code it cites. For the parallel farrowing-pen layout described on its separate page, it gives a minimum internal width of 180 cm. These are Queensland-specific figures, not universal design standards or engineering specifications for every pen type.

Before committing to a building plan, verify current local requirements and have the layout reviewed by a livestock-building specialist. A minimum area or width does not by itself establish that a particular design will suit a given sow, herd, workflow, or climate.

- Identify the applicable rules. Confirm the current welfare and building requirements for the farm’s location and selected housing system.
- Record herd and operating needs. Specify sow size range, litter management, staff routines, cleaning method, and expected handling access.
- Draw the animal zones. Show sow movement and lying space, piglet resting and heat zones, feeding and water access, dunging areas, and protective features.
- Resolve building services. Coordinate heat, ventilation, insulation, drainage, washdown, and equipment maintenance access.
- Review floors and details. Check grip, slats where used, edges, wear resistance, cleanability, and routes for removing waste.
- Check the plan as a working pen. Review how animals and staff will move through it, then verify the final dimensions and details against local rules before construction.
UK government guidance captures the direction of travel: “The aim is for farrowing crates to no longer be necessary and for any new system to protect the welfare of the sow, as well as her piglets.” That is a design objective, not proof that one pen arrangement suits every farm.
