Shredded bark, wood chips, and pine needles can also protect the root zone. For a straightforward starting point, spread about 2–3 inches of organic mulch over the root area and keep it away from the shrub’s stems.
What mulch is best for hydrangeas?
There is no single mulch shown to outperform all others for hydrangeas. University of New Hampshire Cooperative Extension lists pine bark, wood chips, and pine needles as suitable options, while Mississippi State University Extension recommends a 2–3-inch mulch layer for hydrangeas. Choose a material that is readily available and suits your garden’s appearance and upkeep needs.
| Mulch | What to know |
|---|---|
| Shredded pine bark | A practical organic option; UNH lists a 2–3-inch depth. UNH Cooperative Extension |
| Shredded bark or wood chips | Suitable shrub-mulch options identified by UNH; choose based on availability, appearance, and maintenance. UNH Cooperative Extension |
| Pine needles | Another option listed by UNH. Its general mulch guidance gives 3–4 inches for pine needles; for hydrangeas, use the hydrangea-specific 2–3-inch range as a cautious default unless local extension guidance says otherwise. How much mulch should you use?
Apply about 2–3 inches over the root zone. UNH gives this range for pine bark mulch, and Mississippi State recommends 2–3 inches of mulch for hydrangeas. These are practical general recommendations, not a guarantee that the same depth is ideal in every climate, soil, or garden.
How to apply mulch around a hydrangea
- Spread it over the root zone. Cover the soil around the shrub with an even layer.
- Keep the stems clear. Leave a small gap around the main stems rather than piling mulch against them.
- Stay near the recommended depth. Aim for about 2–3 inches instead of building a deep mound.
Will mulch change hydrangea flower color?
Do not rely on pine bark, pine needles, or another mulch by itself to turn hydrangea flowers blue or pink. In many bigleaf hydrangeas, flower color is influenced by soil pH and aluminum availability. UMass Amherst reports that most bigleaf hydrangeas produce blue flowers in acidic soil below pH 5.5. Maryland Extension explains that at higher pH, aluminum is less available and pink flowers result. White-flowered types are an exception in Maryland Extension’s guidance.

If you want to change bloom color, first identify your hydrangea and assess the soil, ideally with a soil test. The suitable amendment depends on existing pH and soil type; mulch is not a dependable stand-alone color treatment.
