The best home backup generator depends on what you need to keep running, which fuels are available, and whether you want to operate the generator yourself or have backup power switch on automatically. Start by listing essential circuits and appliances—not by matching a generator to your home’s square footage. For a permanently installed system, have a qualified professional assess loads, fuel supply, transfer equipment, and local requirements.
What size generator do I need for my house?
Make a list of the loads you want powered during an outage, then check each appliance’s nameplate and startup requirements. Motors and compressors can need more power when starting than they use while running, so adding only normal running watts can underestimate the capacity required.
Potential essentials include a refrigerator or freezer, Wi-Fi equipment, phone chargers, lights, and a sump pump. Central air conditioning, a well pump, an electric range, an EV charger, and an electric dryer can add substantially heavier loads. These are examples, not universal wattage estimates: the actual demand depends on the specific equipment and which items you plan to run at the same time. Generac’s sizing guide recommends load analysis and notes that homes of similar size can have different backup needs.
For a standby system, ask an installer to assess the home’s actual loads and how they may overlap. The generator’s headline capacity alone does not determine whether every circuit can run simultaneously; the design may rely on load management or prioritizing selected circuits.

Should I get a portable or standby generator?
These are different backup approaches, not simply different sizes. Compare them against how much of the home you need to support, how much manual operation you are willing to do, fuel availability, and installation constraints.
| Consideration | Portable generator | Standby generator |
|---|---|---|
| Operation | You start and operate it when needed. | It is permanently installed and can switch to generator power automatically through a transfer switch. |
| Connection | Extension cords can serve basic plug-in loads; a transfer switch can serve selected hardwired circuits. | Connected to home wiring through a planned transfer-switch arrangement. |
| Planning | Requires a safe outdoor operating location, a suitable connection method, and fuel management. | Requires site-specific electrical and fuel planning, installation, and verification of local requirements. |
| Best fit | Occasional or flexible backup where the owner can manage setup and operation. | Homeowners who prioritize automatic operation and backup for selected circuits or a broader set of loads. |
Honda describes extension cords and transfer switches as connection options for portable generators. A standby system is intended as backup to utility power, not a primary power source, according to Generac’s standby generator FAQ. Neither type is automatically the right choice for every home.

What fuel and installation factors matter?
For a standby generator, verify that the fuel supply can meet the unit’s demand at full load. Generac’s installation guidance notes that the gas meter or propane tank and fuel lines need appropriate capacity. Do not assume an existing gas connection or tank is sufficient.
Transfer-switch selection and installation requirements can depend on the home’s service, utility, and jurisdiction. Setbacks, permits, electrical work, and fuel work also need to be checked for the specific site. Have a qualified professional verify the design and local requirements; Generac recommends professional guidance, particularly where a service-entrance-rated transfer switch is involved.

How should a portable generator connect to the home?
Never connect a generator by plugging it into a household wall outlet. That can send power back onto utility lines, putting line workers at risk, and can damage equipment or cause a fire when utility service returns.
For simple plug-in loads, use suitable extension cords as described in the generator’s manual. To supply hardwired circuits such as a furnace or well pump, use a properly selected transfer switch installed by a licensed electrician. Honda explains these portable-generator connection options; a transfer switch must be compatible with the home and generator rather than chosen as a one-size-fits-all accessory.

How far away does a generator need to be?
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says to operate portable generators outdoors at least 20 feet from the home, with exhaust directed away. Never run one inside a house, garage, basement, crawlspace, shed, porch, or carport. Opening doors or windows does not make indoor operation safe.
Install battery-operated or battery-backup carbon monoxide alarms on every level of the home and outside sleeping areas. Follow the generator’s manual and wet-weather warnings, and turn it off and let it cool before refueling. A carbon monoxide shutoff feature is an additional safeguard, not a substitute for safe placement and CO alarms. The CPSC warns that poisoning can cause unconsciousness before a person recognizes symptoms; its December 2025 release says portable-generator CO poisoning kills about 100 U.S. consumers on average each year.

How to choose a generator for your home
- Set outage priorities. Identify the circuits and appliances that matter most, including any medical equipment, heating or cooling needs, water systems, and food storage.
- Check actual electrical demand. Use appliance nameplates and account for startup loads and which equipment may operate together.
- Choose an operating style. Decide whether manual portable backup or an automatically switching, permanently installed standby system suits the household.
- Confirm the connection and fuel plan. For a portable unit, plan a safe outdoor location and an appropriate connection. For standby equipment, have fuel capacity, transfer-switch compatibility, and site requirements assessed.
- Check local rules and ongoing responsibilities. Verify permits, installation requirements, noise and placement constraints, and the maintenance needed for the particular unit.
There is no substantiated universal model ranking or comparable installed-price basis here. Compare exact models only after establishing the required capacity, fuel, configuration, and installation conditions; manufacturer sizing guidance is useful for planning but is not a household-specific professional assessment.
