How to Tension a Bandsaw Blade Using the Flutter Method

The flutter method uses blade movement to help set bandsaw tension. Follow a safe setup and the exact final adjustment for your saw and blade.

The flutter method sets bandsaw blade tension by observing the blade while the saw runs: ease tension until the blade begins to flutter, then tighten until the flutter stops and apply only the final adjustment specified for your saw and blade. The extra turn is not universal. Follow the owner’s manual and blade maker’s guidance, and keep your hands and tools clear of moving parts.

Before you begin: make the saw safe

Unplug the saw before installing the blade, setting up the guides, checking the wheels, or making adjustments with the saw stopped. Keep the wheel covers closed for powered observation. During the running test, do not reach toward the blade, wheels, or tensioning mechanism; use the saw’s controls and tension adjustment as directed by its manual.

  • Use the blade width and type specified for your saw, and check the saw and blade makers’ tension instructions first.
  • Inspect the wheel tires and blade condition. The Timber Wolf distributor’s instructions call for checking the tires and tracking the blade along the middle third of the tire.
  • Move the upper and lower guides well clear of the blade, or remove them if the saw’s instructions permit. WOOD Magazine also removes the throat plate for its procedure.

WOOD Magazine Staff describes the flutter technique as simple and recommended by blade and saw manufacturers in an article updated February 27, 2025. That is the magazine’s characterization; the published instructions do not establish one universal procedure or final setting for every saw and blade. WOOD Magazine’s procedure

How to use the flutter method

  1. Set up with the saw unplugged. Install the blade and move or remove the guides as allowed by the manual. Remove the throat plate if following WOOD Magazine’s steps.
  2. Track the blade by hand. Center it on the wheels, turning the upper wheel by hand while adjusting tracking. Follow the saw manual for the correct position on the tires. Close the wheel covers before reconnecting power.
  3. Establish initial tension. If your saw has a tension gauge or scale, set it at or slightly above the recommendation for that blade width, as WOOD Magazine’s procedure specifies. Use the manual’s instructions if its gauge or setup differs.
  4. Run the saw and observe from a safe position. Start the saw with the covers closed and guides clear. Make any final tracking adjustment only as the manual allows.
  5. Ease tension until flutter appears. Reduce tension gradually while the blade runs. WOOD Magazine describes releasing about half a turn of the tensioning wheel at a time until the blade begins to flutter. Treat that increment as part of its procedure, not a universal value.
  6. Tighten until the flutter just stops. Increase tension in small increments and observe the blade. Then add only the further adjustment prescribed for your specific saw and blade; published examples differ (see below).
  7. Stop and restore the setup. Turn off and unplug the saw before returning the guides to their working positions or reinstalling the throat plate. Set guide clearance and other adjustments by the owner’s manual.

Why the final tension increment differs

Instructions agree on the general idea—reduce tension until flutter appears, then increase it until the blade settles—but not on how much extra tension to add afterward. The following figures are source-specific guidance, not interchangeable settings:

Grizzly G0513X2 manual excerpt Another 1/8–1/4 turn Applies to the surfaced G0513X2 excerpt. The manual mirror was not opened and its edition date is not established.
PS Wood Machines Another 1/2–1 full turn Its procedure for Timber Wolf silicon-steel blades; the page is undated.

Because these instructions differ, do not average them or transfer one source’s turn count to another saw. Use the exact saw manual and blade maker’s recommendations, which may account for blade material and construction. The Grizzly excerpt is useful evidence of model-specific variation, not a substitute for the complete owner’s manual.

Flutter, a tension gauge, or a deflection check?

These approaches provide different kinds of feedback, and the cited instructions do not establish one as best for every saw and blade.

Approach What you do What to keep in mind
Flutter method Observe the running blade, release tension until it flutters, then tighten until the flutter stops and apply the maker’s specified final adjustment. Requires powered observation with guides clear and covers closed. The final tension increment varies by source.
Tension gauge or scale Use the saw’s gauge or a compatible gauge to set a measured reference for the blade. WOOD Magazine uses a gauge setting as the starting point before its flutter observation. A gauge is not required to perform the flutter method.
Static deflection check With the saw stopped, push the blade and assess its movement according to the saw’s specified check. The Grizzly G0513X2 excerpt describes this check as more subjective for that model. Use the model’s stated procedure rather than assuming a universal deflection value.

A separate tension gauge can be useful if you want a measured reference, but it is optional for the flutter method. No specific gauge model is established here; check that any gauge suits your blade and saw.

When to repeat the procedure and release tension

WOOD Magazine advises using its flutter procedure each time the blade is changed. It also suggests relaxing blade tension when the saw will be idle and, on saws without a quick-release lever, recording a consistent number of turns to release and restore tension. PS Wood Machines likewise tells users to detension its bands after daily use. Follow your saw maker’s maintenance advice; do not assume every saw should be detensioned in the same way.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Applying a turn count from another model. The documented final increments range from 1/8 turn to a full turn, depending on the source and blade guidance.
  • Leaving the guides against the blade during the test. Move or remove them as the manual permits, then restore them only after powering down.
  • Adjusting tracking by reaching near a moving blade. Track by hand with the saw unplugged; make powered adjustments only if the manual specifically provides a safe procedure.
  • Treating a gauge reading as a universal setting. Use the recommendation for the actual blade width and saw, then follow the maker’s full setup instructions.
