For most everyday uses, “push pin” and “thumbtack” are overlapping names for small pointed fasteners—not two universally distinct tools. Choose by the actual design and the surface: a graspable plastic-head pin is often convenient for papers on cork, while a low-profile metal tack may suit a simple display. For a magnetic surface where you want to avoid holes, use a magnetic push pin instead.
Are push pins and thumbtacks different?
Not consistently. Victor Technology describes its push pins as “Commonly referred to as Thumbtacks,” and sells them for bulletin and cork boards. The names can refer to fasteners with different head shapes, grips, points, and construction, but the available descriptions do not establish a universal boundary between the categories. The label alone is not a reliable way to predict how a particular fastener will handle or fit a board.
There is also historical variation within the term “thumb tack.” A 1968 U.S. International Trade Commission report described three common constructions: two-piece solid-head, two-piece pierced-head, and one-piece. That is evidence of varied designs at the time, not a complete account of products sold today.
How to choose for a cork or bulletin board
For lightweight papers, maps, calendars, and similar displays, compare the physical fastener and the board rather than choosing by name.

- Intended use: Staples describes an assorted 100-pack of push pins for bulletin boards, maps, corkboards, and calendars, with sharp steel points and removable, repositionable use. Follow the specific product instructions.
These examples illustrate product specifications and uses; they do not establish that every push pin or thumbtack shares them, or that one style inserts, holds, or removes better in a controlled comparison.
When a magnetic push pin is the better choice
On a compatible magnetic surface, a magnetic push pin holds an item with a magnet rather than a point. K&J Magnetics also calls these magnetic thumbtacks and describes them as a way to display items without making holes. They are a different mechanism from pointed fasteners intended for cork: confirm that the surface is magnetic and use a magnet suited to the item and conditions.

How much can a pin hold?
There is no general safe load limit established for ordinary push pins or thumbtacks. Do not treat a fastener intended for papers on a board as a rated hanger for heavy objects; use a hanging fastener rated for the load when the job calls for one.
One material-specific figure should not be generalized: Forbo’s bulletin-board technical guide states, “Tacks can carry a force of 25 N.” That is a claim about tack retention in Forbo’s named bulletin-board material, not a universal pin rating or a safe hanging-load specification. Check the board and fastener manufacturer’s guidance for the actual application.
