Samsung Power Freeze temporarily increases freezer cooling to freeze food faster and, on supported models, help make ice sooner. It uses more energy than normal operation, and its controls and run time differ by refrigerator. Check your model’s manual for the exact button sequence and whether the feature shuts off automatically.
What Power Freeze does
Power Freeze increases the freezer’s cooling activity to speed freezing. Samsung describes increased fan speed on a convertible refrigerator and says the mode can help freeze a large load or quickly freeze perishable food. On supported models, it can also speed ice production.
It is a temporary boost rather than a replacement for normal freezer operation. Samsung warns that using it increases energy consumption.
When to use Power Freeze
- Before loading a large amount of food into the freezer, when your model’s manual recommends it.
- To freeze perishable items more quickly.
- To help the freezer recover after substantial warming, such as a door being left open.
- To help produce ice sooner, if your model supports that use.
For one convertible refrigerator, Samsung recommends turning Power Freeze on at least 20 hours before adding a large quantity of food. That timing applies to the model covered by its convertible refrigerator mode guidance, not every Samsung freezer.

How to turn it on or off
The control depends on the model: it may be a dedicated Power Freeze key, a Freezer button with a press-and-hold shortcut, or a control in the Family Hub Fridge Manager app. In cited U.S. instructions, holding the Freezer button for three seconds turns the feature off; the indicator light goes out. If your panel does not match, use the manual for your exact model rather than assuming the same shortcut applies.
How long Power Freeze stays on
There is no single run time for all Samsung refrigerators. Samsung’s cited guidance gives different model- and region-specific instructions:

These are manufacturer instructions for the models or guidance cited, not a universal timer. Some models return to the prior temperature automatically; others may require manual shutoff.
Using Power Freeze to get ice sooner
Power Freeze may help ice production, but it will not resolve every ice-maker problem. In a U.S. troubleshooting scenario, Samsung says the freezer needs to reach 0°F or colder for ice making and advises enabling Power Freeze when the setting is warmer than 0°F. It recommends checking cooling again after three hours; normal ice production may take longer to resume. These steps are not a guarantee of ice within a fixed time on every model. Samsung South Africa’s support page, last updated October 5, 2020, says Power Freeze can reduce the time to make a tray of ice from 90 minutes to 55 minutes for the appliance guidance it describes. - The button sequence does not work: Check the model manual; the control may be a dedicated key, a Freezer-button shortcut, or an app setting.
- The feature remains on: Check whether your model has an automatic shutoff or requires manual deactivation. Samsung says the feature can remain active for up to 72 hours on some models.
- Ice production is still slow: Check the freezer temperature, ice-maker status, and water supply, then use the troubleshooting instructions for your refrigerator model. Power Freeze alone does not establish that the ice maker or water system is working.
What varies by refrigerator
Samsung’s instructions show meaningful differences in control interface, automatic duration, and whether ice production is emphasized alongside food freezing. The sources do not establish a universal Power Freeze duration, button sequence, electricity cost, or ice output rate. Identify your refrigerator’s model and follow its manual for the applicable controls and timing.
