Among the strangest finds beneath gardens are not just buried coins but an enormous Roman hoard and the remains of a mosaic-floored building. The stories below come from documented discoveries in and around Dorchester and a handful of recorded coin finds elsewhere. Their circumstances differ: one cache came to light when a workman dug a pit, and a mosaic was found during drain work—not during routine gardening.
The Great Dorchester Hoard: about 22,000 Roman coins
The largest find in this collection was uncovered in 1936 in a pit in the garden of a large Roman building behind 48 South Street, Dorchester. A workman discovered about 22,000 coins, mostly Antoniniani, deposited around AD 257, according to Dorset Heritage Explorer. The heritage record cites H. Mattingley’s 1939 article in the Numismatic Chronicle as its underlying publication.
The coins were not simply loose in the soil. The record says they had been contained in a bronze handled jug, a wide bronze basin and a wooden coopered item. After restoration and recording, the coins were distributed among the British Museum, Dorchester Museum, Portland Museum and private individuals in Dorchester. The scale of the cache is remarkable, but its containers and subsequent dispersal are part of the story too.
A Roman mosaic uncovered during drain work
In 1899, digging a drain at Olga Road in Dorchester revealed a Roman mosaic pavement. A Dorset heritage record attributes a description of the pavement to Col. Drew, curator of Dorchester County Museum: when whole, it formed the floors of three rooms connected by two doors. An Ordnance Survey Archaeological Division site visit in 1954 recorded that the area was then under lawns and gardens. The site record describes the discovery and later setting; it does not say the pavement was found during ordinary garden maintenance. Dorset heritage record.

Smaller garden finds: three coins at a time
Not every discovery is a hoard or a building. Domestic garden records also preserve modest finds that help document Roman activity in particular places.
Stratford-upon-Avon
Warwickshire Museum’s TimeTrail lists three coins found in the garden of a house on Tiddington Road. The record describes them as assumed Roman coins, so their identification should not be treated as certain. Warwickshire Museum TimeTrail.

Town Farm, Buckinghamshire
Buckinghamshire’s Heritage Portal records three coins found separately over time in the garden at Town Farm: an as of Hadrian, a coin of Valens and a Roman provincial Greek coin. The portal says the coins are now in Buckinghamshire County Museum. Buckinghamshire Heritage Portal.
Why the circumstances matter
“Found while gardening” can describe very different events. A workman digging a pit, a crew opening a drain and someone tending a domestic garden are not interchangeable circumstances. The method and location affect what can be said about a find: whether it was a buried cache, part of a building or an isolated object, and how confidently it can be dated or identified.

These records also show different outcomes. The Dorchester coins were restored and recorded before being dispersed; the Town Farm coins are recorded as museum holdings; the Stratford coins are listed with a qualification about their identification. A striking object is only part of the evidence—the find context and the quality of the record matter just as much.
A remarkable Roman find nearby—but not in a garden
In a separate discovery reported on 20 July 2026, Devon County Council described an archaeological excavation on farmland between Halberton and Sampford Peverell that uncovered a Roman mosaic, a bathhouse and high-status artefacts. It is an excavation on farmland, not a household garden find. County Archaeologist Bill Horner called its polychrome mosaic “the most westerly example to have been found in a villa in Roman Britain.” The council report provides a regional point of comparison, not another gardening anecdote. What these discoveries can—and cannot—tell us
The cases show that gardens and other developed land can overlie substantial archaeological remains, from individual coins to Roman architecture and a large coin deposit. They do not establish how often unusual discoveries happen in gardens, nor do they amount to a representative worldwide catalogue. They are documented examples, not evidence that extraordinary finds are typical.
