Which type suits the conditions in your home?
Warm, humid rooms: refrigeration or compressor models
CHOICE says refrigeration (also called compressor) dehumidifiers generally perform best in warm, humid conditions and are usually the better option for heavy-duty extraction in hot conditions. Their performance can fall substantially as the air gets colder: in CHOICE’s comparison of one good refrigeration model with one good desiccant model, the refrigeration unit extracted more than four times as much water on average in hot conditions as in cold conditions. That comparison is not a universal result for every model.

Cool, damp rooms: consider a desiccant model
CHOICE says desiccant models can be more effective in cold conditions, making them worth considering for winter condensation or cool rooms. CHOICE’s methodology says its best-performing models removed more than twice the water volume of its worst performers at the coldest tested conditions. This describes CHOICE’s lab results, not a guarantee that any particular desiccant model will outperform every compressor unit.
For a room that is both cold and damp, look for extraction figures at 10°C or 15°C where available, rather than relying on a warm-weather headline rating. CHOICE’s dehumidifier buying guide and testing methodology explain why operating conditions matter.

How to compare extraction rates fairly
A litres-per-day figure is meaningful only alongside the temperature and relative humidity at which it was measured. Manufacturers commonly quote extraction at warm conditions such as 30°C and 80% relative humidity; those figures do not tell you how much water a unit will remove in a cold bedroom. If winter damp is the problem, ask the manufacturer for performance at 10°C or 15°C, when available, and compare like with like.
For example, Mitsubishi Electric Australia states that its MJ-EV38HR-A removes up to 38 litres per day at 30°C and 80% relative humidity. That is the manufacturer’s rating under those stated conditions, not an expected daily amount in a colder room. The manufacturer also says the model was CHOICE Recommended for 2024 and lists laundry mode, an inverter compressor, air-purification mode and permanent drainage. Treat these as manufacturer-published claims; they do not establish a current independent ranking. What else to check before choosing a unit
- Energy efficiency: compare how much energy a model uses per amount of water removed, rather than judging only by extraction capacity.
- Tank and drainage: CHOICE suggests a tank of at least 4 litres as a practical starting point. A larger tank means less frequent emptying but also adds bulk. Continuous drainage can reduce manual emptying if the model supports it; confirm hose connection and placement for that exact unit.
- Noise and mobility: consider where the appliance will run, how easily it can be moved, and whether its noise is acceptable for that room.
- Controls and maintenance: check the controls you will actually use, how the filter is cleaned, and whether the tank is easy to remove and empty.
CHOICE’s buying guide covers these selection factors. A continuous-drain hose is model-dependent, not a universal accessory.

If you need moderate dehumidification in warm weather, CHOICE says a split-system air conditioner’s dry mode may help when the unit is located appropriately. It may not address damp in other rooms or cold-season condensation, so consider where the moisture problem occurs before deciding whether a separate appliance is needed. For air-conditioner upkeep, RACV quotes its Head of RACV Trades, Kieran Davies, advising regular filter cleaning and servicing every couple of years; that guidance concerns air-conditioner maintenance, not dehumidifier performance. RACV’s advice.
