Start with the place you want to soften
Use the planting site to narrow your options before choosing by color or habit. A dry, sunny path edge calls for a different plant from a shaded border or a hanging basket. In containers, trailing plants are usually set around the rim so their stems can spill over the sides.
- Sunny, free-draining ground: Consider creeping thyme for a small area or between stepping stones.
- Sunny ground or a large container with room: Ornamental sweet potato vine offers colorful foliage and vigorous growth.
- Sunny paving edge: The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) lists creeping Jenny and thymes as examples for sunny edges.
- Shaded paving edge: The RHS lists bugle as an example for shade.
- Hanging basket: Choose plants suited to containers and plan for more frequent moisture checks than you would for many in-ground plantings.
The RHS examples come from a front-garden guide, not a regional assessment of plant behavior. Check local suitability, particularly for spreading groundcovers.
Trailing plants for groundcover
Creeping thyme for sunny, well-drained spots
Creeping thyme (Thymus serpyllum) is a low-growing perennial groundcover suited to small areas and spaces between stepping stones. University of Illinois Extension lists full sun to very light shade, well-drained soil, spacing of 8–12 inches and hardiness to Zone 4. Drainage matters: the RHS says thyme dislikes damp conditions and may suffer root rot, especially in winter. Its guidance summarizes the preference this way: “Thyme thrives in full sun and free-draining conditions, in the ground or in containers.” RHS: How to grow Thyme
Ornamental sweet potato vine where vigorous growth is welcome
Ornamental sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) is grown for colorful foliage and can be used as groundcover or in large containers. University of Illinois Extension lists full sun and moist, well-drained soil as its preferences. It can spread a long way, so allow ample room and check whether it suits your location and the cultivar available locally. Creeping Jenny and bugle for paving edges
For an urban front-garden example, the RHS suggests creeping Jenny (Lysimachia nummularia) along sunny paving edges and bugle (Ajuga reptans) for shaded edges. The guide does not establish detailed cultivar, hardiness or maintenance comparisons, so treat these as starting points rather than universal recommendations. Use trailing plants in hanging baskets
Baskets offer a way to add foliage and flowers at eye level, but they need different care from an in-ground bed. The RHS recommends a liner for wire baskets, short or trailing plants around the edge, thorough watering after planting and regular checks for moisture. In hot summer weather, baskets may need watering daily; this is a conditional care recommendation, not a fixed schedule for every basket or climate. Container soil can dry faster than soil in the ground, and hanging baskets may need especially close attention during hot weather. If reducing watering is a priority, favor plants suited to your conditions and avoid assuming a basket will need the same care as a nearby bed. For thyme, prioritize free drainage rather than keeping the soil damp; for ornamental sweet potato, the Extension guidance specifies moist but well-drained soil.
