Store firewood outdoors on a raised base, split and stacked loosely so air can move through it. Shelter the top from rain and snow, but leave the sides open; keep the pile away from buildings and check its moisture before burning. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says wood burns best below 20% moisture content.
How to set up a firewood stack
- Choose an outdoor location. Pick a sunny, ventilated spot away from buildings and healthy trees where possible. Check local fire-safety requirements for separation from structures, fuel tanks, and property lines.
- Raise the wood off the ground. Use a rack, rails, or pallets so the bottom layer does not sit on damp soil. This helps limit exposure to ground moisture and pests.
- Split the wood before stacking. Split pieces dry more readily because more surface is exposed to air.
- Stack loosely. Leave spaces between pieces so air can circulate rather than enclosing the pile tightly.
- Protect the top. A roof with an overhang or a tarp over the top can keep off rain and snow. Leave the sides open for airflow; wrapping the entire pile can trap moisture.
A woodshed can work if it keeps precipitation off the pile while allowing ventilation. The EPA’s firewood storage guidance describes a roof overhang as a way to protect stored wood from rain and snow.
Should firewood be covered?
Yes, cover the top when the stack needs protection from rain or snow, but avoid sealing the sides. A top-only tarp is a flexible option; a roofed shelter offers more permanent protection. In either case, retain airflow and keep the stack raised from the ground.
How long does firewood need to season?
EPA gives general guidance of at least six months for softwood and at least twelve months for hardwood. These are estimates, not guarantees: species, piece size, weather, and storage conditions affect drying. Split wood before stacking and check its moisture before burning rather than relying on elapsed time alone. See EPA’s storage guidance.

How to tell whether firewood is dry enough to burn
Use a wood moisture meter if available. EPA says wood burns best below 20% moisture content and recommends checking with a meter. Appearance alone is not a reliable substitute for a moisture reading. More information is in the EPA’s storage guidance.
Keep firewood and pests away from the house
Stored firewood can harbor pests. The National Plant Board recommends keeping it away from buildings and cites at least three feet as consumer guidance; that is not a universal fire-safety code. Local rules may require different distances, so check the rules that apply to your property. Keep firewood outdoors, and avoid stacking it against buildings or living trees.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choosing a storage setup
Choose a setup that matches the amount of wood and the space available, while preserving airflow and ground clearance. A rack suits a modest pile; a roofed woodshed can shelter a larger supply; a tarp is flexible if it covers only the top. A moisture meter helps assess readiness, but does not replace good storage and adequate seasoning.
