Use Toolpaths to 3D Print Custom Patterns

Choose whether your 3D-print pattern belongs in the model or in the slicer, then verify the generated paths before printing.

Start by deciding what the pattern needs to do. If it should change the object’s visible shape or texture, build it into the model in CAD or a parametric script. If it should alter how the printer fills only part of the object, use a slicer setting or modifier volume. If it should follow a surface in one continuous spiral, use a suitable helical-path generator or vase mode. These approaches create different results, and the right one depends on your slicer, printer, material, and geometry.

Choose where the pattern should live

A “custom pattern” can mean either geometry that is part of the printed object or a rule that changes the paths the slicer generates. Decide which result you need before modeling or changing settings.

What you want Practical route What it controls
A visible shape or texture on the object Model the pattern in CAD or a parametric script, then export a mesh. The object’s geometry.
A different fill or another print setting in one region Add a modifier mesh aligned with the model. A slicer setting within the modifier’s volume.
A continuous path that follows a surface Use a compatible vase/spiral mode or a specialized path generator. The toolpath itself; available controls vary by software.
Repeat a configured pattern in an automated workflow Use a slicer command-line workflow if the installed slicer supports it. Configuration-driven G-code generation.

Make a pattern part of the model

Use CAD or a parametric script when the pattern must remain part of the object’s shape—for example, a raised surface motif or a deliberately patterned opening. This keeps the geometry with the model rather than relying on a slicer rule to create it.

In Autodesk Fusion, documented mesh export formats include 3MF, STL, and OBJ. Fusion’s documentation describes 3MF as carrying units and surface properties, while STL is a unitless triangulated surface. Check the units and part arrangement when importing, especially with STL, so the pattern and the rest of the model arrive at the intended scale and position. See Fusion’s mesh export documentation.

Change a setting within a region using a modifier mesh

A modifier mesh is a separate volume aligned to the model that tells the slicer to change a setting locally. Slic3r’s manual illustrates using a modifier volume to assign 100% fill density to a region. That figure is an example of a local setting in the manual, not a generally recommended density or a guarantee for another slicer or model.

  1. Use a modifier shape supplied by your slicer or create a separate modifier mesh in CAD.
  2. For a CAD-made modifier, align it to the object’s coordinates and export it as a separate STL.
  3. Import the object and modifier into the slicer, then assign the intended local setting to the modifier volume.
  4. Inspect the sliced preview to confirm the changed region and its boundaries appear in the generated paths.

The Slic3r manual is legacy documentation, so confirm that your current slicer supports modifier meshes and check its current interface and setting names. See the Slic3r modifier-mesh workflow.

Generate a continuous surface-following path

If the pattern needs to trace a surface continuously, a helical path generator may be more appropriate than a local fill rule. TOOLPATHS documents a project that generates a helical path on a surface. Its options include length- or angle-based sampling, staggered angular sampling, layer-height fields, and an explicitly tilted axis for slanted geometry. These are features documented for that project, not controls guaranteed to exist in every slicer.

OneWall also documents settings for its own model. Treat those settings as specific to that model and workflow rather than as universal vase-mode instructions. Before choosing a generator, check whether it accepts your geometry and whether its output can be used by your slicer and printer. See TOOLPATHS and OneWall’s documentation.

Use a slicer command line for repeatable jobs

For a repeatable or automated workflow, Slic3r documents loading configuration for command-line G-code generation and a --fill-pattern option. GUI presets must be exported or loaded for command-line use. Verify the available flags and configuration behavior against the version installed on your computer; command-line options and profiles may differ across versions.

  1. Prepare the desired configuration and export or load the GUI preset if you are using one.
  2. Check the installed version’s command-line documentation for the current configuration and fill-pattern options.
  3. Generate G-code, then review the sliced preview or toolpath output to verify the pattern before printing.

Verify paths in the slicer before printing

The sliced preview is the practical checkpoint between design intent and printer output. Confirm that the pattern appears in actual paths, not just in the model view, and inspect the walls, gaps, and solid regions around it. A preview can reveal that a feature was omitted or that a modifier affects a larger or smaller region than intended.

  • For a geometry pattern, check that the feature is present and represented by printable paths.
  • For a modifier, check where the local setting begins and ends and whether it changes the intended region.
  • For a helical path, check that the generated route follows the intended surface and handles slopes or transitions as expected.
  • Check the machine, material, nozzle, and print profile against the chosen geometry and path strategy before sending the job.

No single set of settings is established for every printer and geometry. A path that appears in preview still needs to be compatible with the specific machine, material, and profile you plan to use.
