Rather than invent the missing picks, this guide explains what that roundup reports and how to weigh it against more recent, separately conducted reviews. For a purchase today, verify the exact model, configuration, and current listing before comparing prices or specifications.
What the 2025 roundup reports
Gadget Review says its roundup considered heat-up time, rated burner output, cooking area, heat distribution, maintenance, build, portability, grease handling, and repeated use. Its available passage names the Camp Chef Flat Top Grill 900, but does not establish the other seven picks. The specifications below are therefore attributed to that article, not presented as independently verified current manufacturer specifications.
Camp Chef Flat Top Grill 900
Gadget Review reports an 877-square-inch cooking surface and 72,000 BTU across six independently controlled burners. It also describes the griddle as pre-seasoned, with foldable shelves and leveling feet, and gives its weight as 160 pounds. Those features suggest substantial cooking capacity and adjustable burner zones, but the listed area and burner output alone do not prove even temperatures across the plate. Check current product documentation for the configuration you are considering. Read Gadget Review’s 2025 roundup.
What newer reviews add
Later reviews offer useful comparisons, but they are not part of the 2025 roundup and were not conducted as one head-to-head test. Bob Vila says it tested seven models, cooking foods including smash burgers, fajitas, bacon, eggs, and pancakes. WIRED says its reviewer cooked a range of meals over several months and updated its guide in May 2026. Their findings describe their own test units and methods, not universal results for every production unit.

| Model or configuration | Reported specifications | What the reviewer observed |
|---|---|---|
| Blackstone 36-inch with hood / Iron Forged, Bob Vila’s tested configuration | 768 square inches; four burners; 60,000 BTU | Bob Vila reports that its test model needed manual seasoning and reached above 500°F, with an observed range from the low 300s to upper 500s when burners were set evenly. The reviewer also noted cabinet-door alignment issues on the assembled test unit. Bob Vila’s 2026 review. |
| Pit Boss 2-Burner Ultimate Lift-Off, Bob Vila’s reviewed model | 421 square inches; two burners; 26,000 BTU | Bob Vila describes a removable top that can be used for tabletop cooking, a potentially useful format for camping or tailgating. Bob Vila’s 2026 review. |
| Traeger Flatrock, WIRED’s reviewed model | Not stated in the cited WIRED material | WIRED recommends it overall and reports notably even, reliable heat in its reviewer’s use. This is a reviewer finding, not a guarantee across conditions or model versions. WIRED’s guide, updated May 2026. |
| Weber Slate, 36-inch four-burner version discussed by WIRED | 48,000 BTU; cooking area not stated in the cited WIRED material | WIRED describes the plate as pre-seasoned and rust-resistant, but notes hot spots over burners and says electronic features require an outlet. Seasoning is still an ongoing process; confirm the Slate size and generation before applying these details. WIRED’s guide, updated May 2026. |
How to choose the right outdoor griddle
Match cooking area to the number of people and the food
A larger surface gives you room to cook several foods at once, but it also means a bigger appliance to set up and store. Think about the meals you actually make—such as a batch of burgers with vegetables or breakfast for a group—and compare usable surface area, not just the product’s overall dimensions. A 421-square-inch lift-off unit and a 768- or 877-square-inch freestanding griddle belong to different capacity and portability classes.
Treat burner count and BTU as capacity clues, not heat maps
BTU ratings describe rated burner output; they do not show how evenly heat reaches the cooking surface. More burners can give you more independently adjustable zones, but look for reported temperature mapping or cooking observations if even heat is a priority. The cited reviews show why: WIRED reported even heat from the Traeger Flatrock, while also noting hot spots over the Weber Slate’s burners.
Rank #2
- Collapsible Side Shelves: Foldable side tables with hooks for hanging tools, and the right-side table with knife strip frees up your hands, both providing a convenience storage solution.
- Protective Hard Cover: Close the lid to keep your griddle away from unwanted elements, extending the lifespan of your cooking surface. Please do not close the lid while grilling.
- Spacious Cooking Surface: 766 sq. in. pre-seasoned steel griddle cooking area measuring 34.92"L x 21.93"W provides enough space for daily meals with family or friends
- High-Performance Capability: Four independently controlled stainless steel burners produce a total cooking power of 52,000 BTU (13,000 BTU each) for the cooking surface
- Mobility and Stability: Two casters with brakes and two directional wheels facilitate easy mobility and secure positioning during use
Check the whole ownership setup
Before choosing, compare the exact model and configuration for its grease drain and collection system, side workspace, storage footprint, setup demands, and any included or compatible accessories. These details can affect everyday use as much as burner output. A heavy, large-surface model may suit a permanent backyard setup better than a vehicle-based trip; a removable-top design may be easier to adapt for tabletop cooking, but confirm how the base and top are meant to be used.
Understand seasoning and surface care
Care needs differ by cooking plate and product line. Bob Vila reports that its tested Blackstone required manual seasoning. WIRED describes the Weber Slate as pre-seasoned and rust-resistant, while noting seasoning remains ongoing. Follow the manufacturer’s care directions for the exact model rather than assuming one griddle’s maintenance routine applies to another.

Compare current local prices only after matching configurations
The cited reviews were published or updated at different times, so their prices and value labels are not a synchronized market comparison. Compare current local listings for the same size and generation, and account for the configuration—such as a hood, stand, or other included parts—before treating two prices as equivalent.
A compact alternative for camping and tailgating
Camp Chef’s Griddles 14 is a separate compact flat-top accessory, not another name for the large Flat Top Grill 900. Camp Chef’s official page describes it as pre-seasoned and lists a grease drain and heat diffuser; it also indicates that the product is sold and used in the United States only. Check the official listing for compatibility and current availability. See Camp Chef’s Griddles 14 details.

What can—and cannot—be concluded from these reviews
The available 2025 roundup material does not support a complete ranking of eight products. The later Bob Vila and WIRED reviews help illustrate how size, surface care, portability, and observed heat behavior vary, but their testing methods and dates differ. Use the named results as attributed reviewer evidence, then verify current specifications and availability for the exact model you plan to buy.
