The hole in a soda-can tab is part of the opening mechanism, and after opening, it can also help steady a straw. The straw trick is useful, but available sources do not establish that the standard tab hole was originally designed for that purpose.
How the tab opens the can
The tab is a lever attached to the can’s top by a rivet. When you lift it, the tab acts on the rivet and the scored panel beneath it, first venting the can. After pressure is released, the lever’s action shifts around its fulcrum and pushes the scored panel inward to create the drinking opening. The tab stays attached rather than becoming a loose pull-off piece.
Engineer Bill Hammack of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign describes the sequence this way in an explanation published by the American Beverage Association: “Pulling a soda-can tab exerts force on the rivet, which in this case is the load you want to move. This lets you vent the pressurized can. But something remarkable happens the moment you vent the can: The tab becomes a first-class lever, in which the force you apply changes direction around the fulcrum, like a seesaw.”
Can the hole hold a straw?
Yes. Once the can is open, rotate the tab so its hole sits over or near the drinking opening, then pass a straw through the tab. The tab can help keep the straw positioned instead of letting it slide around as easily.

This is a convenient secondary use, not a confirmed account of the hole’s original design purpose. A patent describing a stay-on tab explains its leverage and movement during opening, while other patent concepts describe can-and-straw features such as dedicated apertures or straw-retaining parts. Those specialized proposals are different from the standard tab and do not show that the ordinary tab hole was designed as a straw holder.
Why can ends may feel different
Manufacturers have also adjusted can-end shapes to make opening easier. In a 2006 account of its own development work, Asahi Group Holdings says it tested tab arches and finger recesses to improve finger engagement. Its report describes prototype evaluations involving about 100 people, a separate muscle-activity measurement with 40 participants aged 20–50, and an evaluation model covering 18 tendency patterns and seven terms for impressions of opening ease. Asahi reported reduced opening time and muscle effort, but did not publish numerical effect sizes on the page; these are figures from the company’s historical product-development account, not general population findings or independent efficacy estimates.
