The right choice depends on the strip, the slab, and the carpet installation instructions. The strips must also be positioned and secured well enough to hold carpet under stretching tension.
What Home Depot recommends for concrete
The Home Depot’s How to Install Carpet guide, last updated September 7, 2023, says: “If you’re installing carpet over concrete, use masonry tacks or an epoxy adhesive to attach the strips to the floor.” Its guide distinguishes this from wood subfloors, where it describes nailing the strips.
Those are two possible methods, not a universal ranking. Check that the tack strip and attachment product are intended for the slab and compatible with the carpet system. Follow the exact product directions for surface preparation, application, curing, and safety. The guide does not specify a particular adhesive, tack size, or method for every type of concrete floor.
Compare the two attachment methods
- Masonry tacks: Use only when the selected strip, fastener, and floor conditions permit them. Do not assume ordinary nails are suitable for concrete.
- Epoxy adhesive: Use only an adhesive approved for the specific strip and floor, following its preparation and curing instructions.
Either method must secure the strip sufficiently to maintain carpet tension. The surfaced excerpt from the CRI Carpet Installation Standard, hosted in Home Depot’s catalog, says tack strip must be securely fastened to maintain tension from power stretching.

How to lay out the strips
Home Depot’s guide gives these layout directions for the tack strips:
- Cut strips to fit the room perimeter.
- Point the tacks toward the wall. The CRI excerpt likewise says to angle the pins toward the vertical abutment.
- Butt strips end to end.
- Wrap the strips around door frames; do not run them across door openings. The CRI excerpt also says to avoid door openings and sills.
Set the gap to the carpet and installation requirements
Home Depot’s consumer guide says to leave a gap between the wall and strip of about two-thirds the carpet thickness, using scrap carpet as a spacing guide. The CRI excerpt gives a separate limit: the gully must be slightly less than carpet thickness and no greater than ⅜ inch. These are not interchangeable universal measurements. Follow the carpet manufacturer’s instructions and the requirements for your installation system where they differ.

Choosing a strip for a concrete floor
Home Depot’s Carpet Tack Strips catalog includes Halex listings described for concrete subfloors, including a 7/8-inch-by-4-foot strip described for wood or concrete and a 1-inch-by-4-foot strip described for concrete. These are examples of the product category, not proof that a particular strip is right for every carpet or slab. Check the current listing and the product’s own instructions; do not assume a strip includes suitable masonry fasteners.

The cited installation guide does not establish your slab’s composition or condition, whether it contains radiant heat, or whether a particular fastener or adhesive is compatible with it.
