Battery-powered mowers produce no exhaust at the mower while in use, and they avoid gasoline refueling and engine-oil changes. They are not impact-free: electricity generation and battery production have environmental costs. Whether switching makes sense depends on your lawn’s size and terrain, the mower’s runtime, charging and replacement-battery needs, and your budget. A manual reel mower avoids fuel and electricity use but is best suited to smaller, relatively even lawns.
What “zero-emission” means for a lawn mower
For a battery mower, “zero-emission” is accurate only at the point of use: it has no exhaust from burning gasoline while cutting. Its electricity may come from sources that produce emissions, and manufacturing its battery also has environmental impacts. A 2021 University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign research team modeled a 10-year lifecycle and estimated 49.9% lower lifecycle CO2 emissions for electric push mowers and 32.3% lower emissions for electric riding mowers than their gasoline counterparts. Those are estimates under the study’s equipment, energy, regional electricity-mix, battery-impact, cost, and time-horizon assumptions—not a guarantee for a particular mower or household. The study also estimated 4.7%–10.6% higher total ownership costs for electric options in its modeled comparison, despite lower operating costs and higher initial purchase costs. Read the study.
Choose a mower that fits the lawn
The mower’s power source matters, but so do the conditions it must handle. Consider lawn area, slope and uneven ground, how quickly grass grows, cutting width, obstacles, and whether you mulch or collect clippings. A mower that can manage a small, level yard may not suit a larger property or steep terrain.
| Mower type | Practical fit | Trade-offs to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| Battery walk-behind | Many average lawns, provided the mower’s actual runtime and cutting capacity suit the yard. | Runtime, recharge time, battery replacement, and the possible need for a compatible spare battery. |
| Corded electric | Yards with accessible power and a layout where the cord can be managed safely. | The cord restricts movement and requires careful maneuvering around obstacles. |
| Manual reel | Smaller, fairly even lawns where quiet, human-powered mowing is practical. | Less efficient on large or uneven lawns; twigs and leaves can be difficult, and reel blades require professional sharpening. |
| Riding electric | Larger properties where a walk-behind mower may not be practical. | Check runtime, charging, battery serviceability and replacement, and the higher upfront investment typical of electric equipment in the 2021 study’s modeled comparison. |
Oregon State University Extension says the best choice depends on the yard, goals, and preferences. It notes that rotary blades are easier to maintain because they detach, while reel blades require professional sharpening. See its mower-selection guidance.

Check whether one charge can finish the job
Battery runtime is not a universal yard-size guarantee. Grass height, seasonal growth, terrain, mower settings, and the machine itself affect how long a charge lasts. Consumer Reports’ May 4, 2026 comparison says a fully charged battery walk-behind can finish an average lawn; in its rated electric walk-behind set, two-thirds of models should mow a quarter acre on one charge. That result applies to its ratings and tests, not every model or yard. Check the specifications for the exact mower and battery, and consider whether a spare compatible battery or a shared tool battery platform makes sense. Read Consumer Reports’ comparison.
Compare ownership needs, not just the purchase price
Before choosing, compare runtime and recharge time with the area you need to mow, then check battery compatibility and replacement options. Also consider charging and storage arrangements, access to service, blade maintenance, noise, and whether a corded model can reach the whole lawn without awkward routing. An electric mower avoids gasoline refueling and engine-oil changes, but it adds battery charging and eventual replacement to the ownership picture.

Make mowing practices more sustainable
Keep blades sharp and leave clippings where practical
A sharp blade makes a clean cut and matters regardless of mower type. Alec Kowalewski, Oregon State University’s Grover Family Endowed Sustainable Urban Landscapes Specialist, advises: “The key, he emphasized, is to keep mower blades sharp, no matter what type you use.” When you mow often enough that clippings do not form heavy clumps, leave them on the lawn or use a mulching mower to chop them finely. Clippings return nutrients and may reduce fertilizer needs. Break up large clumps so they do not smother grass. Kowalewski also advises: “Instead of bagging up clippings, consider leaving them where they fall.” Oregon State University Extension explains mower and clipping choices.
Use fertilizer and water thoughtfully
Mowing is one part of lawn care. Oregon State University Extension recommends thoughtful fertilizer application, lower-phosphorus products where synthetic fertilizer is used, and water-wise choices suited to local conditions. Its guidance is especially tied to Oregon conditions, so follow recommendations for your region and turf rather than assuming one schedule or product suits every lawn. Plan for battery care and recycling
Battery equipment trades fuel and engine-oil maintenance for charging, storage, runtime management, and eventual battery replacement. At end of life, do not assume a battery belongs in household trash or that every collection program accepts it. EnergySense at the University of Illinois System says groundskeeping batteries should be recycled to recover materials and keep toxic materials out of the waste stream. Collection options vary by location; check local government programs, retailers, battery shops, or repair shops, and confirm they accept the battery’s chemistry and size. Read the University of Illinois System’s battery and maintenance guidance.
