That was a four-person construction effort using a cordless screwdriver—not a complete, finished home built by one person. Waterproofing, exterior finishing, electrical work and plumbing still had to be done.
What is the Pop-Up House?
The Pop-Up House was a prototype by French architecture firm Multipod Studio. New Atlas and ArchDaily identify it as a 150 m² project in Aix-en-Provence, southern France, completed or reported in 2014. New Atlas’s 2014 report describes a spruce frame, a laminated-veneer-lumber floor and expanded-polystyrene (EPS) insulation blocks. ArchDaily’s project page records the project’s architect, location, area and year.
The system was presented as a way to assemble a highly insulated building envelope with relatively simple connections. The account is about this particular prototype; it is not evidence that every sustainable home can be built the same way or on the same schedule.
What did the four-day build include?
Maisonapart’s 2014 report says four people assembled the structure in four days and names a cordless screwdriver as the required tool. New Atlas also says the components were joined with wood screws using a standard electric screwdriver.

#1 Best Overall
- Spacious Design: Offers ample space to store oversized lawn tractors, ATVs, and your daily driver with its 7' tall side walls and 8' wide double doors
- Easy DIY Assembly: Pre-cut components ensure a simple and straightforward assembly process, saving you time and effort
- Customizable Foundation: Kit delivered without a floor, allowing for various foundation types like concrete slabs
- Bright and Inviting Interior: Three windows and transom door windows invite natural light, creating a well-lit workspace
- Durable Construction: Built to last with high-quality, unfinished wood material and a robust steel frame
That timeline applies to structural assembly, not all work needed to make a home complete and ready to occupy. Maisonapart reports that finishing remained, including waterproofing and exterior work, as well as electricity and plumbing. A screwdriver made the reported structural connections; it did not eliminate design, site preparation, skilled trades, inspections or the rest of construction.
How was the structure put together?
Reports describe timber components combined with EPS insulation blocks and fastened with screws. Maisonapart says the timber structure was mounted on micro-piles and used 300 mm-wide EPS blocks. These are descriptions of the reported Pop-Up House prototype, not a general specification for a code-compliant house or a recommendation for every site.
The straightforward assembly method helps explain the headline: many structural parts could be joined mechanically rather than relying on a more complex on-site sequence. But the speed of one prototype’s assembly does not establish how long another project would take. Site conditions, design, crew, local requirements and the scope included in the schedule all matter.
Does it avoid heating, and how sustainable is it?
New Atlas characterized the Pop-Up House as a passive-house concept, citing its insulation and airtight thermal envelope. Its report’s observation that the prototype did not require heating was tied to its location in the generally mild climate of southern France. It should not be read as a promise that a similar building would need no heating in colder climates, or under different occupancy and comfort conditions.

A 2018 PopUp House press kit says energy consumption is reduced “by up to 90% compared to a traditional house,” attributing the result to 30 cm insulation blocks and limited thermal bridges. This is a vendor-authored comparison, not independent proof of savings for every building. The cited material does not establish a comparable, independently verified operational-energy result for the prototype. Actual performance depends on the building, climate, systems and use, as well as what the comparison house represents.
The project’s reported insulation and envelope strategy are relevant to energy efficiency, but “sustainable” is broader than insulation alone. The available project accounts do not establish a full lifecycle assessment, emissions comparison or end-of-life impact for the materials.

New Atlas reported a preliminary 2014 estimate of €30,000 including labor, while noting that waterproofing, electricity and plumbing were excluded. This is a historical estimate for the project, not a current quote or turnkey price; it does not establish what a comparable home would cost today.
An Archiexpo project-visit account from that period said Multipod Studio was seeking manufacturers to certify, develop and market the system. That historical effort does not confirm present-day availability. The cited information does not establish whether the system is currently sold, who its authorized suppliers might be or what it would cost now.
Quick Recap
What to take from the headline
- Four days: a reported 2014 structural-assembly schedule for a 150 m² prototype, with four people.
- Only a screwdriver: the named tool for fastening the described structural components, not the only equipment or expertise required to deliver a finished home.
- Sustainable: a project framed around insulation and reduced energy demand, with the strongest quantified savings figure coming from the vendor rather than independent comparative verification.
