For evening fragrance, choose plants whose flowers open at dusk or become more fragrant after sunset, then place them near a patio, doorway, or path where you can enjoy the scent. These six options range from a compact mound for a small space to climbers for a supported vertical feature. Fragrance is subjective and can vary with cultivar, weather, location, and the person doing the smelling.
Choose by space, season, and scent timing
| Plant | When it’s fragrant | Form and scale | Growing notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jasmine tobacco (Nicotiana alata) | Strongly scented at night, according to the RHS. | Upright; about 1–1.5m tall. | Fertile, moist but well-drained soil; full sun or partial shade. Propagate by seed. Harmful if eaten; avoid skin contact. RHS plant profile |
| Late Dutch honeysuckle (Lonicera periclymenum ‘Serotina’) | Sweet fragrance intensifies in the evening. | Vigorous deciduous climber; can reach about 8m. | Full sun or partial shade; light pruning helps manage growth. Flowers from midsummer into autumn. RHS hardiness rating H6 applies to UK conditions. RHS cultivar account |
| Fragrant evening primrose (Oenothera stricta) | Scented yellow flowers open in the evening. | Upright, short-lived perennial. | Open, sunny site with well-drained soil; seed can be sown in early summer. RHS plant profile |
| Night phlox (Zaluzianskya ovata) | Summer fragrance is strongest in the evening, after around 7pm. | Compact mound, about 20cm high and wide. | Warm, sunny spot and well-drained soil. RHS garden guide |
| Summer-flowering jasmine (Jasminum officinale) | Recommended by the RHS among climbers for summer evening fragrance. | Climber; can be grown in a large container with support. | Give it a support to climb. The RHS recommendation does not establish identical scent or hardiness for every jasmine species or cultivar. RHS guide to plants for moths |
| Sweet rocket (Hesperis matronalis) | Richly perfumed on late spring and early summer evenings. | Short-lived perennial; may self-seed if allowed. | Included by the RHS among plants for adult moths. RHS guide to plants for moths |
Six night-scented flowers to consider
Jasmine tobacco for a bed or sunny border
The RHS describes Nicotiana alata’s tubular, greenish-yellow summer-to-autumn flowers as “strongly scented at night.” At about 1–1.5m tall, it suits a bed where the flowers can be enjoyed from nearby seating or a path. It grows in fertile, moist but well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade, and the RHS recommends seed propagation. Because the plant is harmful if eaten and the RHS advises avoiding skin contact, choose a spot away from children and pets, and handle it with care.
‘Serotina’ honeysuckle for a vertical feature
Late Dutch honeysuckle is a vigorous deciduous climber whose sweet fragrance intensifies in the evening. It flowers from midsummer into autumn and can reach about 8m, so plan for a sturdy support and room to manage its growth. A light prune can help keep it in bounds. The RHS gives it an H6 hardiness rating under UK conditions; that rating should not be treated as a guarantee for other climates.
Fragrant evening primrose for an open, sunny spot
Oenothera stricta is an upright, short-lived perennial with scented yellow flowers that open in the evening. It suits an open site in sun with well-drained soil. The RHS says seed can be sown in early summer.

Night phlox for a compact space
Zaluzianskya ovata forms a mound about 20cm high and wide, making it a practical choice where a climber or tall border plant would overwhelm the space. Its summer flowers are most fragrant in the evening, after around 7pm, according to the RHS. Give it a warm, sunny position and well-drained soil.
Summer-flowering jasmine on a support
The RHS recommends summer-flowering jasmines as climbers for summer evening fragrance and notes they can grow in a large container with support. The specific recommendation here is Jasminum officinale; it should not be read as a promise that every jasmine species or cultivar smells the same or shares the same hardiness.

Sweet rocket for late spring evenings
Hesperis matronalis is a short-lived perennial with a rich perfume on late spring and early summer evenings. It may self-seed if you let it, which can suit a relaxed planting but may require thinning where you want to keep its spread controlled.
Place fragrance where you’ll notice it
Even a fragrant plant can be easy to miss if it is planted at the far end of a garden. Put evening-scented flowers near a patio, seat, doorway, or path you use after dusk. The RHS recommends sheltered locations because they help retain fragrance; smaller plants can also sit near entrances or grow in containers. Use night phlox where space is tight, nicotiana or evening primrose in beds, and honeysuckle or jasmine when you want a supported vertical feature. RHS advice on fragrant plants

Match the planting to the season and local conditions
These choices extend fragrance across several parts of the growing season: sweet rocket brings late spring and early summer scent, night phlox flowers in summer, honeysuckle ‘Serotina’ runs from midsummer into autumn, and nicotiana can flower from summer into autumn. The timing in your own garden can shift with climate and growing conditions.
The RHS guidance is primarily for UK gardeners, and its hardiness ratings refer to UK conditions. If you garden elsewhere, check local extension or botanical-garden guidance and the plant or seed label before buying. For seeds, verify the botanical name and local suitability; a listing for a different nicotiana or evening primrose species may not match these recommendations.

Can evening-scented flowers help wildlife?
The RHS notes that flowers that open in the evening or become more strongly scented then can provide nectar for moths, and names nicotiana, evening primrose, honeysuckle, and summer jasmine among relevant examples. Sweet rocket is also included in its advice for adult moths. These plants may benefit visiting wildlife, but planting them does not guarantee moth or other pollinator sightings.
