When neither edge of a rough board is straight enough to track against a table-saw fence, attach a straight reference to the stock for an initial cut—or guide a circular saw with a clamp-on edge guide. Use either setup only if the board can be supported and held securely throughout the cut. A jig cannot make unstable or badly distorted stock safe to rip.
Choose a method based on the stock and support
The goal of the first cut is to create one straight edge. Once you have a dependable reference edge, you can use it for later sizing cuts, provided the board also sits flat on the saw table and stays controlled against the fence.
| Method | Best fit | Key limit |
|---|---|---|
| Straightedge attached to the board, used against the table-saw fence | A board that can sit flat and remain stable on the saw, with enough room to secure a straightedge along its length. | The attached guide does not correct a board that rocks, twists, or cannot be controlled safely through the cut. |
| Circular saw with a clamp-on edge guide | A board that can be supported securely for a guided cut, especially when a table-saw fence cannot reference either edge. | Guide length, clamping arrangement, and saw compatibility must suit the workpiece and cut. |
| Bandsaw breakdown followed by jointing | Rough-sawn stock or stock that will not sit flat and track securely on a table saw. | Requires access to suitable machines and safe workholding for each operation. |
Make an initial edge with a straightedge on the table saw
Katz-Moses Tools describes attaching a straightedge at least as long as the board and guiding that straightedge against the table-saw fence while trimming the rough edge. The straightedge acts as a temporary reference; the rough edge itself is not what guides the cut.
- Check the board first. Confirm that its face sits flat on the table and that you can support and control it for the full cut. If it rocks, twists, or will not stay reliably against the fence, do not use this setup.
- Choose a straightedge long enough for the board. Katz-Moses Tools describes using plywood or a long ruler. Position it so it provides a consistent reference along the board for the cut.
- Secure the straightedge. Double-sided tape is one fastening method described by Katz-Moses Tools. For more uneven stock, the article also mentions hot-melt glue or screws placed in the waste area. Whatever the fastening method, verify that the straightedge is firmly attached and cannot shift; tape is not a substitute for stable workholding.
- Set up and make the cut only if the assembly tracks securely. Keep the straightedge against the fence and support the board so it remains controlled through the cut. If the workpiece or guide shifts, stop rather than forcing it through.
- Check the new edge before using it as a reference. The initial rip is intended to establish a straight edge. If it is not suitable for the next operation, correct it before relying on it for final sizing.
This jig approach does not make every rough board suitable for a table saw. A bowed, twisted, or unstable workpiece may still fail to sit flat or track securely even with a straightedge attached.

Use a circular saw and clamp-on edge guide
A clamp-on aluminum edge guide paired with a circular saw is another way to make a guided straight-edge rip, as described by WOOD Magazine. Set and secure the guide for the saw and cut, support the board, and follow the guide and saw manufacturers’ instructions. Check that the guide is long enough, clamps securely, and is compatible with the saw and workpiece.
This option still depends on secure workholding: a guide helps direct the saw, but it does not stabilize a board that moves or rocks. Do not proceed if you cannot support and control the stock for the entire cut.

When to use a bandsaw and jointer instead
Fine Woodworking’s ripping guidance stresses that the face on the table and the edge against the fence should be flat and straight. For rough-sawn stock, it recommends breaking the material down on a bandsaw and then jointing it. That is the more suitable path when the stock cannot sit flat and track securely on a table saw; do not treat a straightedge jig as a workaround for unstable stock.
Table-saw safety during a rip
OSHA identifies kickback and flying particles as table-saw hazards. Its guidance calls for a spreader on ripsaws, the proper blade for the cut, sufficient stock support, and standing to the side of the blade. Follow the saw manufacturer’s instructions and do not continue if you lose stable control of the workpiece.

- INCLUDES: (1) Straight Edge Clamp Saw Guides 24in
- FUNCTION: Space-saving tools that allow you to make straight cuts on any workpiece with parallel edges. This clamps allow for full adjustability to accommodate materials 24 inches in length. They have low-profile jaws that enable the clamps to be used inverted, which provides an unobstructed work area
- EASY TO USE: Perfect for beginners as well as professional contractors, the straight edge clamps hold the materials and are easy to adjust. The fixed clamp at the end has a lever that you push down to lock it in place. With the locking lever released and the fixed clamp in position, draw the adjustable end clamp in and position firmly against the opposite end of the material
- APPLICATIONS: Perfect tools for making straight cuts on the materials. You can easily make high-precision cuts for a wide range of woodworking applications, including rotary saws, jig saws, circular table saws, routers and jointers
- PREMIUM BUILD: Constructed with a lightweight aluminum body and is 2-3/16 inches wide, providing the strength and rigidity needed to prevent the bar from bending under pressure while operating a router or circular saw, for long-term durability
- Support the stock so it does not sag or shift during the cut.
- Use the proper blade and keep the workpiece in stable contact with the table and fence.
- Stand to the side of the blade rather than directly in line with it.
- Use the spreader and guarding appropriate to the saw and operation.
- Stop if the board, attached straightedge, or guide cannot be held securely throughout the cut.
For industrial straight-line edging equipment, the UK Health and Safety Executive describes ejected offcuts and kickback as risks and discusses machine guarding and anti-kickback features. That industrial guidance is not a setup specification for a home-shop jig: HSE, Straight Line Edger.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What determines whether a setup will work
- Workpiece stability: The board must sit flat and remain controlled. If it cannot, use another suitable preparation method.
- Support: Arrange support for the board so it does not tip or move while being cut.
- Board dimensions: The straightedge or clamp-on guide must suit the length and layout of the cut; the sources do not establish a universal size limit.
- Available tools: A table saw, circular saw with a compatible edge guide, or bandsaw and jointer provide different routes. Choose based on what you can operate safely with this stock.
- Cut purpose: The attached-straightedge method establishes an initial reference edge. A separate sizing cut may still be needed to reach final width.
There is no source-established universal cutoff for how much board distortion is acceptable, nor a comparable measured accuracy figure for these methods. Make the decision from the board’s actual stability and your ability to control it, not from an invented tolerance.
Quick Recap
Rank #4
- Saw Guide Compatibility: This saw guide turns your circular saw into a precision edge-guided tool; works best with a regular (side-blade) circular saw, corded or cordless, that has a blade guard or base that allows the sled to clamp securely
- Woodworking Tools: Universal sled holds guide rail and edge guide, making the circular saw guide portable; not ideal for saws with plastic upper blade guard because guard might interfere with the sled clamping or alignment
- Versatile Carpenter Tools: Works for left- or right-bladed saws and users; please note, this guide does not work with worm drive saws, as the base or motor housing tends to interfere with the sled’s ability to sit flat and clamp properly
- Accessible Workshop Accessories: Large handle on the edge guide maintains contact with the material;, this saw guide is not ideal for saws with bulky or odd shape guards that prevent a flat fit with the sled plate
- Premium Kreg Tools: We offer products that help woodworkers close the gap between idea and outcome
