A straight-edge cutting jig guides a handheld saw or other compatible tool along a fixed reference so you can make a straight cut without feeding a large sheet through a table saw. Choose the guide by cut length, workpiece size, tool compatibility and whether you want a simple clamped rail, an edge-guided fence or a track with a sled.
How a straight-edge cutting jig works
The guide provides a straight reference for the tool: the saw’s base, an edge of the tool or a guided sled follows the rail as you cut. The guide does not position itself or stay put on its own. Register it to the intended cut and secure it against movement. Kreg describes its standard Straight Edge Guide as an aluminum guide that the saw rides against, with built-in clamps (Kreg Straight Edge Guide).
Choose a guide style for the cut
Clamped straightedge
A clamped straightedge is a simple option for a single rip or crosscut when the guide’s usable length covers the cut. Kreg lists its standard Straight Edge Guide at 48 inches and its XL at 96 inches. These are manufacturer-stated capacities, not independent accuracy tests (standard guide; XL guide).
Edge-guided fence
An edge-guided fence references the edge of the workpiece rather than a separately positioned rail. Kreg describes its Rip-Cut as an edge-guided option for repeatable cuts up to 24 inches wide. It is intended for cuts referenced from a sheet edge, not for every arbitrary cut location (Kreg cutting-guide comparison).
#1 Best Overall
- Premium Cutting Tools: Turn most circular saws, jig saws, or trim routers into precision, edge-guided tools
- Handy Woodworking Tools: The saw guide is compatible with any right- or left-handed circular saw
- Track Saw Accessory: Cutline indicator positions cuts while the guide rail helps you cut precise lines
- Secure Workshop Accessories: The anti-slip clamp secures portable saw guide; works with materials up to 8 feet
- Kreg Tools: We offer products that help woodworkers close the gap between idea and outcome
Track and sled
A track-style system constrains the tool along a rail or track, typically with a guided sled. Kreg positions Accu-Cut as its track-guided circular-saw option: the comparison page lists 50 inches for the standard system and 100 inches for the XL, with an extension also noted (Kreg cutting-guide comparison). Choose this style if you prefer the tool to follow a dedicated track rather than ride beside a fence.
Compare the listed options
| Guide | Manufacturer-stated capacity or use | Potential fit |
|---|---|---|
| Kreg Straight Edge Guide | 48-inch capacity; aluminum guide with integrated clamping. Kreg lists circular saws, some jigsaws and trim routers as compatible tools (Kreg product page). | Sheet-good cuts that fit within the stated length and suit a clamped rail. |
| Kreg Straight Edge Guide XL | Up to 8 feet (96 inches), according to Kreg (Kreg product page). | Longer rips or crosscuts for which the standard guide is too short. |
| Kreg Accu-Cut | Track-guided circular-saw system; Kreg lists 50 inches for the standard option and 100 inches for XL (Kreg comparison). | Users who want a track and sled arrangement. |
| Kreg Rip-Cut | Edge-guided cuts up to 24 inches wide, according to Kreg (Kreg comparison). | Repeat cuts measured from the edge of a sheet. |
| Johnson Level J4900 | 98-inch aluminum guide described for plywood, doors and other large material; the manufacturer lists circular saws, routers, jigsaws and a utility knife for scoring drywall (Johnson Level product page). | A long, multipurpose guide where the listed tool uses match the task. |
Compare usable cut length with the actual cut, then check that the workpiece dimensions, guide arrangement and tool base leave enough clearance. Manufacturer capacities describe listed product specifications; they do not establish comparative cutting accuracy or performance.

- INCLUDES: (1) Straight Edge Clamp Saw Guides 24in
- FUNCTION: Space-saving tools that allow you to make straight cuts on any workpiece with parallel edges. This clamps allow for full adjustability to accommodate materials 24 inches in length. They have low-profile jaws that enable the clamps to be used inverted, which provides an unobstructed work area
- EASY TO USE: Perfect for beginners as well as professional contractors, the straight edge clamps hold the materials and are easy to adjust. The fixed clamp at the end has a lever that you push down to lock it in place. With the locking lever released and the fixed clamp in position, draw the adjustable end clamp in and position firmly against the opposite end of the material
- APPLICATIONS: Perfect tools for making straight cuts on the materials. You can easily make high-precision cuts for a wide range of woodworking applications, including rotary saws, jig saws, circular table saws, routers and jointers
- PREMIUM BUILD: Constructed with a lightweight aluminum body and is 2-3/16 inches wide, providing the strength and rigidity needed to prevent the bar from bending under pressure while operating a router or circular saw, for long-term durability
Set up the guide and tool
- Check the tool and guide instructions. Confirm the exact saw or other tool is compatible and that its base geometry can ride alongside or within the guide as designed.
- Mark the intended cut. Position the guide relative to that line using the offset specified by the product instructions. There is no universal guide-to-blade offset: if the instructions do not give the needed value, determine it with the actual tool and guide on scrap.
- Register and secure the guide. Align it with the cut and use its built-in clamps or the securing method specified for that guide. Do not assume a straight rail will remain aligned if it is not secured.
- Make the cut according to the manuals. Keep the tool’s base or sled engaged with the guide as intended, and follow the tool and guide manufacturers’ instructions for stock support, blade depth and safe operation.
Check compatibility before cutting
Kreg says its standard guide works with left- and right-blade circular saws, some jigsaws and trim routers; its FAQ specifies using the tool with its base plate installed (Kreg product page; Kreg Straight Edge Guide FAQ). “Some” matters: these statements do not guarantee fit with every model. Check the exact tool manual and guide instructions, including base clearance and any required configuration, before relying on a listed compatibility claim.
Johnson Level’s J4900 page describes use with circular saws, routers, jigsaws and a utility knife for scoring drywall (Johnson Level product page). Kreg’s FAQ names hardwood, plywood, MDF and PVC as materials one might cut with a typical circular saw; that is not a guarantee that every saw, blade and guide combination is suitable for each material (Kreg FAQ).

When a homemade guide makes sense
A homemade straightedge can be a low-cost choice for occasional cuts, but its construction must suit the tool and task. The available product information does not establish a universal build plan, ideal stock, dimensions or fasteners. Kreg identifies plywood and MDF among common sheet goods used with cutting guides, but that alone does not determine the right material or design for a homemade jig (Kreg FAQ). For a reliable setup, use a guide that is straight and sufficiently long, and verify its alignment and offset with the actual tool before cutting the workpiece.
