Succulent Security: How to Identify and Manage 10 Common Pests and Diseases

An identification-first guide to common succulent pests, diseases, and moisture problems, with practical inspection, treatment, and prevention advice.

Start by identifying the cause before treating a succulent that is yellowing, stippled, sticky, weak, or soft. Those signs can point to pests, disease, or growing conditions, and the problems a plant faces depend on its species and environment. The ten issues below are a practical guide—not a prevalence ranking, and not a checklist every succulent will encounter.

How to inspect a succulent before treating it

Iowa State University Extension advises: “Identify the primary issue causing problems.” A symptom alone rarely identifies the cause: sticky residue, for example, can accompany sap-feeding insects, while soft or blackened tissue may be associated with persistently wet soil and rot.

  1. Check the whole plant. Inspect leaf surfaces and undersides, leaf bases, stems, and crevices. Look for insects, fixed coverings, cottony deposits, stippling, webbing, powdery growth, or chewed areas.
  2. Check the growing medium. Adult flies near the soil can point to persistently damp mix. White waxy material around roots or in soil may indicate root mealybugs.
  3. Use magnification when needed. Spider mites can be difficult to see; a 10x hand lens can help with inspection, though it does not guarantee a diagnosis.
  4. Match the clue to the plant’s condition. Consider recent watering and whether the soil has had a chance to dry. Do not treat normal waxy coating or webbing alone as proof of a particular disease or pest.

For broader symptom checks, see Iowa State University Extension’s houseplant diagnosis guidance.

Seven pests to look for

1. Mealybugs

Look for white, cottony clusters along stems, leaf veins, leaf bases, or in crevices. Mealybugs feed on sap; sticky honeydew and sooty mold may also appear. Because they can hide in hard-to-see places, inspect the whole plant rather than treating only the most visible cluster.

For a small infestation on a houseplant, UC IPM says direct application of isopropyl alcohol at 70% or less concentration with a cotton swab can sometimes help. Confirm that the plant tolerates the treatment, apply it to the insects, and do not assume that a whole-plant spray is suitable for every succulent. Follow any product label.

2. Scale

Scale insects may look like small, fixed, flat or dome-shaped coverings on leaves or stems; sticky surfaces can occur too. Scale can be confused with mealybugs, so inspect closely. Small, visible coverings may be scraped or pried off carefully.

3. Root mealybugs

White, waxy deposits around roots or in the soil can signal root mealybugs. Root feeding can weaken a plant and contribute to its susceptibility to rot. If the plant is declining and there are signs in the growing medium, inspect the root ball rather than assuming the problem is above ground.

4. Spider mites

Stippling, fine webbing, and dust-like signs on leaves are clues. The mites themselves may be hard to see without magnification, so check with a hand lens if available. Webbing by itself is not conclusive; look for additional signs before choosing a treatment.

5. Aphids

Aphids feed on sap and may appear on leaves or flowers. Water can dislodge some insects; insecticidal soap is another possible control when the product is appropriate for the plant. Follow the label directions.

6. Fungus gnats

Small adult flies around the soil may indicate that the growing medium stays damp. Correct the persistently wet conditions rather than relying on insecticide alone.

7. Slugs and snails

Chewed holes and slime trails are useful clues. Inspect the plant and nearby growing area for the animals, especially where the damage is fresh.

Three disease and moisture problems

8. Powdery mildew

White, powdery growth on leaf surfaces can indicate powdery mildew, which may contribute to leaf drop. Succulents can also have a normal waxy coating, so check whether the white material has the appearance and distribution of disease before treating it.

9. Gray mold and leaf spots

Gray mold and leaf spots are among the disease problems that can affect houseplants. Remove affected material when appropriate and address conditions that favor disease. If symptoms are severe or continue to spread, seek a reliable diagnosis rather than applying a broad treatment based on appearance alone.

10. Root or crown rot

Persistently wet soil and overwatering are common underlying issues in succulent problems. Soft or blackened tissue may warrant a closer look at the crown and roots, but symptoms can have more than one cause. Iowa State University Extension recommends wetting the soil completely, then allowing it to dry completely before watering again.

Choose a targeted response

Match the action to the evidence. Physical removal or washing can help with some visible pests; a labeled soap, oil, or pesticide may be appropriate in other cases. Use any treatment only if its label covers the plant and follow its directions. Avoid applying one blanket treatment to every succulent or spraying a plant simply because it has a symptom.

  • Visible, localized insects: Remove or wash them where appropriate, then keep checking the plant for signs that remain or return.
  • Suspected mealybugs: A cotton swab allows targeted application to visible insects when using a suitable treatment; confirm plant tolerance first.
  • Possible spider mites: Inspect leaf surfaces and undersides with magnification before deciding that webbing is diagnostic.
  • Flies over wet soil: Address the damp growing medium and watering pattern.
  • Decline with soil or root signs: Inspect the root ball when warranted and consider whether wet conditions are contributing to rot.
  • Severe, unclear, or spreading symptoms: Get a reliable diagnosis before escalating treatment.

Prevent recurring problems with care and observation

Prevention is mostly about growing conditions and early detection. Provide suitable light, use a well-draining medium and container, water appropriately, and inspect plants regularly. For soil, commercial cactus or succulent potting mix is one option recommended by UC Master Gardener guidance.

Mighty Mint Peppermint Oil Plant Protection Spray, 16 oz
  • Plant-Based Pest Protection: Helps protect plants from common pests including gnats, spider mites, aphids, fungus issues, and other plant-damaging insects using plant-based ingredients.
  • Peppermint Oil Formula: Made with peppermint oil to help deter pests and support healthier plants without harsh chemical treatments in the garden or on the windowsill.
  • Safe When Used As Directed: Designed to be safe for use around people and pets when applied according to label directions on houseplants, garden beds, or greenhouse plants.
  • Easy Spray Application: Ready-to-use spray provides quick, even coverage with minimal mess and easy cleanup. Just shake and spray, no mixing or dilution needed.
  • Indoor & Outdoor Plant Use: Suitable for houseplants, gardens, greenhouses, and outdoor plants to help maintain healthy plant growth in a compact 16 oz size.

Use a wet-dry watering cycle: water the soil thoroughly, then let it dry completely before watering again. Check the actual soil condition rather than watering by a fixed calendar, since drying time varies with the plant and its growing conditions. Regularly looking over leaf bases, undersides, stems, and soil makes it easier to catch a problem before it becomes widespread.
